Alvin A. (16 Dec 1830-????)

Moses was born to Stephen Peary and Rhoda Boston in their home town of Sanford, York County, Maine. His family moved to Denmark, Oxford County probably around 1802.

Huldah was born in Bridgeton, Cumberland County, Maine, the fifth of nine children to David Porter and Hulda Kimball. She was named for her mother, and also for an older sister who had died in childhood.

Moses served as a corporal in the Massachusetts Militia during the War of 1812, enlisting with his father, although his father served less than two weeks. Maine was part of Massachusetts at the time.

Moses and Huldah married around the time of the war, either before or during. They settled in Denmark, Oxford County. The 1820 and 1830 censuses showed them there, with the households of Moses’s father Stephen and brother Stephen Jr. nearby. In 1830 they had a girl age 15-19, two boys and a girl 10-14, two boys and a girl 5-9, and two boys under 5.

About 1833 they moved a hundred miles north, settling in Dallas Plantation a few miles outside Rangeley, Franklin County. In the 1840 census, their married daughter Huldah Abbott and married son Samuel Peary were living on either side of them. They still had the five youngest boys at home.

In 1850, just Asa and Alvin were still at home.

By the 1860 census, Moses (71) and Hulda (68) were living with Asa and his family at Getchell Plantation in Franklin County.

Moses must have played some role in the Civil War on the strength of his having been in the War of 1812, since the 1870 census listed Major Peary (82) and Huldah (78) living with Asa and family at Dallas Plantation, Franklin County.

Moses died in 1878, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips, Franklin County. In the 1880 census, Huldah was living with daughter Betsy and her family in Anson, Somerset County. She died in 1883 and is buried with Moses.

Children

Stephen Peary (1813-1899)

Stephen, named for his paternal grandfather, married Susan Rowe (1817-1908), daughter of Ebenezer Rowe and Betsy Allen, on 5 Dec 1842. They lived in Phillips, Franklin County, Maine. Children:

James Hall (25 Dec 1843-17 Aug 1864)

Mary E. (1 Feb 1845-18 Dec 1886) — m. Warren Henry Bright on 9 May 1866

Rhoda A. (16 May 1846-6 Mar 1921) — m. Nathaniel Willard

Elmon Stephen (4 Mar 1848-26 Jun 1883) — m. Flora Isabella Johnson

Eldusty (1851-????)

Lucian (15 Nov 1852-9 Jun 1920) — m. Eda G. Wetherbee

Eldusty is such an unusual name that I’m not sure whether the Eldusty Peary in the 1860 census was really Stephen’s daughter, or Samuel’s daughter being counted a second time in her uncle’s house. Stephen died in 1899, and Susan in 1908. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips.

Rhoda Ann Peary (1814-1905)

Rhoda, named for her paternal grandmother, married William Melvin Hoar (15 Jan 1809-14 Jul 1893) in 1834. He was the son of Hinkley ancestors Luther Hoar, Sr. and Eunice Lakeman. They remained in Franklin County. Children:

Sophia B. “Sophie” (8 Jan 1836-18 Nov 1854)

Charles A. (24 Oct 1838-11 Nov 1903) — m. Harriet E. Walker

William Melvin Jr. (13 Dec 1840-9 Dec 1910) — m. Sarah E. Haley

Emily C. (1 May 1843-4 Mar 1925) — m. Jerry Oakes

Harriet N. “Hattie” (4 Apr 1847-26 Dec 1908) — m. Simon Oakes

Edwin (10 Aug 1849-10 Sep 1849)

Wesley Newell (11 Jul 1850-5 Sep 1915) — m. Eldora Hoar; m. Eleanor Rowe in 1891

Henry (1856-1930) — m. Matilda Heath in 1886; m. Margaret Barnes; m. Agnes Florence Glover

Willis A. (6 Jun 1859-7 Oct 1922) — m. Julia Edith Ross

William died in 1893, and is buried in Schoolhouse Cemetery, Rangeley. Rhoda died in 1905 and is buried with him.

Huldah Matilda Peary (1816-1892)

Huldah has her own entry in the family tree.

Moses Peary, Jr. (1817-????)

Moses reportedly went to Tennessee, and nothing further. One familysearch.org page says he was the Moses Butler Perie (1818-1887) who lived in Leeds, Androscoggin County and married Phebe Grant, but there’s plenty of evidence contradicting that claim.

Samuel Augustus Peary (1819-1890)

Samuel married Abigail Heath (21 Aug 1818-13 Jun 1896). They lived in Denmark, in Weld, and in Phillips, Franklin County. Children:

Sarah Emma (Sep 1839-after 1929) — m. Francis E. Sampson on 30 Aug 1865

Stephen (25 Mar 1841-1847)

Betsy Ann (14 Apr 1843-????)

Ezra H. (19 Mar 1845-186x) — Civil War death, location unknown

Huldah K. “Belle” (12 Apr 1847-18 Feb 1900) — m. Richardson Metcalf on 19 Aug 1879

Asa K. (14 Apr 1849-27 Jun 1894) — m. Mary E. Welch on 23 Aug 1874

Eldusty (7 Jun 1851-19 Nov 1935) — m. John Drury Whitney on 26 Jan 1870

Samuel A. Jr. (2 Feb 1854-10 May 1914) — m. Ida Mace; m. Maggie R. Gormley

Abbie Ella (11 Jul 1859-11 Aug 1936) — m. ??? Tyler in 188x; m. Charles J. H. Dean on 28 Apr 1898

Lillie Ada (13 Jun 1862-27 Mar 1894) — m. Nehemiah Evander Ranger on 16 Oct 1885

By 1880, Samuel and Abigail and daughter Lillia were living with their son Samuel Jr. and his family in Weld. Samuel died in 1890, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Abigail died in 1896 and is buried with him. Several of their children settled in Massachusetts.

Betsy C. Peary (1820-1905)

For Betsy’s story, see the entry for her husband, David Abbott, on the Abbott-Locklin family page.

David Porter Peary (1822-1901)

In 1850, David was living with a bunch of Hoars – in-laws of his sister Rhoda – in Franklin County. He married the eldest daughter, Deborah Toothaker Hoar (23 May 1831-24 Jan 1916), in the 1850s. They lived in Rangeley. Known children:

Florence E. (7 Jun 1854-15 Apr 1864)

Clara Ellen (5 Jan 1858-1927) — m. John Freemont Kimball on 8 Jan 1882 or 1881

Florence Ada (9 Jul 1866-1936) — m. Frank Haley on 18 Jul 1884

Eva Betsey (9 Jul 1866-1957) — m. John Dexter Waterman Quimby on 17 Aug 1884

Alice May (9 Apr 1875-16 Sep 1964) — m. Harris Milton Bemis on 17 Jan 1893

David Ernest Peary (8 Sep 1880-1949) — UNSURE OF PARENTAGE; m. Genie J. Moore on 15 Jul 1905

From 2 Dec 1861 to 20 Aug 1865, David was a private in Company E, 13th Maine Infantry Regiment. In the 1880 census, the household included infant grandson David Ernest Peary, which suggests David had a son for whom there is no record. Or one of the girls got pregnant out of wedlock. Or the child was adopted. Or Deborah really did have a baby at age 49 and the census got it wrong. Anyway, the same boy, by then grown, was claimed as a son in the 1900 census, which showed David and Deborah living in Madrid. David died in 1901, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Deborah died in 1916 and is buried with him.

John Calvin Peary (1824-1862)

John moved to Centre County, Pennsylvania in the 1840s, reasons unknown. There he married Adaline Lavine Lamborn (24 Mar 1824-10 Nov 1906). Children:

Amanda (13 Aug 1848-24 Nov 1932) — m. Simon Kephart

Rosetta J. (28 Aug 1851-6 Nov 1939) — m. Fred Carroll

Emma (1853-????)

Frances A. “Fannie” (13 Oct 1854-30 Apr 1936) — m. John T. Hobba

Charles Augustus (5 Oct 1856-21 Mar 1915)

James Willard, Sr. (28 Aug 1859-22 May 1915) — m. Minnie Ellen Snyder about 1886

The 1860 census showed the family in Half Moon Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania. John enlisted as a private in Company E, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, and died on 2 Jan 1862 at Fort Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia. He is buried in Hampton National Cemetery, Virginia as J. C. Piery.

The 1870 census showed children Frances and Charles as pupils at a boarding school in Fayette, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. Adaline remarried to a William Cornmesser (love those German names!), but was working as a hotel servant in Decatur, Pennsylvania by 1880. In 1900 she was living with son James. Adaline died in 1906, and is buried in Grandview Cemetery, Tyrone, Blair County, Pennsylvania.

Asa Kimball Peary (1826-1898)

Asa married Mary Jane Oakes (18 Feb 1829-17 Dec 1891). They lived at Getchell Plantation and later Dallas Plantation, near Rangeley. Most of their children died young:

Westley (1853-22 Aug 1855)

Lovey (16 May 1854-11 Sep 1861)

Augusta (31 Jul 1858-21 Sep 1861)

Issetta (1859-1927) — m. Joseph H. Tibbetts

Hannah (1 Feb 1860-21 Sep 1861)

Phirilla (16 May 1866-22 Aug 1867)

George I. (1869-????)

Armina (12 Nov 1873-19 Sep 1879)

Some records appear to confuse Asa with his namesake nephew Asa K. Peary (1849-1894). From at least 1860 through at least 1870, Asa’s parents lived with him and Mary Jane. Asa died in 1898 and is buried with Mary Jane in the Oakes/Peary Cemetery in Dallas Plantation.

Charles Peary (1828-????)

Charles went to Pennsylvania like older brother John, and... nothing further.

Alvin A. Peary (1830-????)

Alvin also went to Pennsylvania sometime after 1850, and also nothing further.
