John Abbott was born in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, the son of Richard W. Abbott and Hannah Locklin. His family lived in Tuftonboro Township, which is immediately north of Wolfeboro.

Huldah Peary was born in Denmark, Oxford County, Maine to Moses Peary and Huldah Porter.

The Abbott family moved from New Hampshire to Franklin County, Maine in the 1830s. John and Huldah married there on 2 Apr 1835. The 1840 census showed them with three young children (Moses, Hannah, and Nancy) living in Dallas Plantation, a few miles northeast of Rangeley. They were living next door to both his and her parents.

The 1850 census listed them in Franklin County: John (37) and Huldah (33), plus children Hannah (13), Moses P. (12), Nancy L. (10), Matilda (4), Louisa F. (2), and Arabella P. (1). John’s parents, Richard W. (60) and Hannah (57), were living with them, although Richard died the following year, after which Hannah moved away to Boston.

The 1860 census for Sandy River Plantation south of Rangeley, about halfway to Madrid, listed John (47) and Huldah (44), plus children Moses P. (22), Mary P. (14), Loiza F. (12), Arabella P. (10), Almena B. (8), Elverna (7), Charles S. (4), and Luella (2). Daughter Hannah was living next door with her family. The birth records for their children were re-transcribed at some later date by Inza Toothaker Hinkley.

On 27 Nov 1861, John enlisted as a private in the 13th Maine Infantry Regiment, Company E. This unit served in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas during the Civil War. [There was a different John G. Abbott of Oxford County, Maine who served in the 23rd Maine Regiment.] He was discharged for disability on 1 Aug 1862 at Ft. Saint Philip in Louisiana. His discharge record described him as 5' 8½", black hair, gray eyes, dark complexion. In 1869, he filed for a pension as an invalid.

The 1870 census for Rangeley listed John (55) and Huldah (52), plus children Luella (14), Charles S. (12), and John (8). In addition to having his age a bit wrong, it incorrectly listed John as born in Maine. Son Moses was living nearby.

By 1880, the family had followed the lead of daughter Nancy and were in Caribou, Aroostook County, Maine: John (67, again listed as born in Maine), “Olive” (64), and children Luella (23), Charles S., and John Jr. (18), plus a hired hand named Joseph Ouillette. Charles’s age was listed as “1”, clearly a mistake, or maybe that’s a slash to indicate lack of information.

John died in 1886. Huldah filed for a military widow’s pension that same year, and appears to have received it, as there’s paperwork for it continuing until about the time of her death in 1892. I don’t know where John and Huldah are buried, but one descendant claimed Huldah died in Caribou, most likely at the home of daughter Nancy or son John Jr.

Children

Hannah L. Abbott (~1836-1893)

Hannah married Daniel Hoar, Jr. (25 Dec 1832-11 Feb 1923), son of David Hoar and Elizabeth Toothaker, around 1855. Their children:

Anson Morrill (19 Dec 1855-13 Oct 1926) — m. Augusta Emily Hinkley on 25 Dec 1882

Samuel A. (15 Aug 1857-11 Jun 1889) — m. Helen M. Collins on 6 Aug 1882

Joel (Mar 1860-19xx) — m. Josephine C. “Josie” Haines about 1880; divorced; m. Mariam B. Flagg Sanborn on 29 May 1899

Viola (1862-17 Jul 1918) — m. Charles N. Morse on 6 Jun 1880; m. James H. Wales on 26 Nov 1898; m. Arthur A. Caswell on 12 May 1912

Ira Daniel (Aug 1864-13 Mar 1940) — m. Josie E. Gile on 17 May 1888

Augustus (30 Mar 1867-18 Feb 1896) — never married

Linda A. “Linnie” (3 Feb 1869-1932) — m. Eldbridge Oscar Ross on 5 Mar 1888

Minnie F. (3 Feb 1869-12 Jul 1950) — m. Frank H. Kempton on 2 Oct 1887; m. Wells Pierce Davis on 18 Nov 1897; m. Francis Bartlett “Frank” Doten on 17 Oct 1914

George Daniel (11 Sep 1874-12 Jul 1955) — m. Mertie A. Lamb on 20 Oct 1900

Elverna (Mar 1878-193x) — m. Edward Frederick Alden on 19 Jan 1897

In the 1860 census of Sandy River Plantation, they were living in between his parents and her parents, and their children were Anson M. (4), Samuel A. (2), and Joel (infant). In the 1870 census of Rangeley, they had 8 children: Anson M. (14), Samuel A. (12), Joel (10), Viola (8), Ira D. (5), Augustus (3), and the twins Minnie F. and Linda A. (4 months). They were living next door to 10-year-old Ermon Toothaker, our ancestor.

The 1880 census for Rangeley listed Daniel (47) and Hannah (42) with children Anson M. (24), Samuel A. (22), Joel (20), Viola (18), Ira D. (15), Augustus (13), Linda A. (10), Minnie F. (10), George D. (6), and Elverna (2), plus a boarder named Charles Morse. For some reason, it listed Linda as “son” and crossed out her first name.

Hannah died in 1893 of blood poisoning from ulcers. She’s buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Her son Anson, who married Augusta Hinkley (1865-1926) and who later took in Cherrie Toothaker after the death of Cherrie’s mother, was also buried there many years later.

The 1900 census listed Josie C. Hoar (Dec 1860-19xx), ex-wife of Daniel's son Joel, living with him in Rangeley and listed as daughter-in-law. Her son Everett M. Hoar (Apr 1888-1969) was listed as son-in-law to Daniel, which makes no sense at all. To make things weirder and honestly a bit creepy, Daniel married Josie on 1 Oct 1900. They had a son, Clinton A. (8 Jan 1901-Mar 1983).

The 1910 census showed Daniel and Josie still together, with son Clinton (9). Everett (22) was also still there, now listed as just “son”. I would prefer to believe he was Joel's son, but who knows.

Daniel died in 1923. By 1950, Clinton and mother Josie were living in Essex County, New Jersey, and Clinton was an attendant in a mental hospital.

Moses P. Abbott (1838-1911)

Moses married Phoebe Toothaker Hoar (28 Jul 1839-10 Jun 1929), daughter of David Hoar and Elizabeth Toothaker, in late 1860 or early 1861. I deduce that because they were both single in the 1860 census, and because of when their first child was born. Their children:

Eva F. (23 Dec 1861-9 May 1862)

Marcena E. “Mar” (1863-????)

Mary E. (1867-????)

William Bell (1870-????)

Leslie A. (27 Nov 1871-22 Aug 1938) — m. Sarah Martha Randall on 2 Oct 1895; m. Susie Crosby in 1905; divorced; m. Alice J. Hussey in 1924

Flora F./M. (May 1875-25 Oct 1914) — m. Melvin B. Farley on 14 Jul 1894

Albert (1878-????)

Effie May (1881-1 Jan 1961) — m. Frazier Ira Cronkhite on 29 Jun 1902

In 1863, Moses enlisted in the 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company F, as a resident of Dallas Plantation. In June 1870, age 32, he was living in Rangeley near his parents, with wife Phebe T. (30) and children Marcena E. (7), Mary E. (3), and Lily Bell (0), the latter a misidentification of son William.

In the 1870s, the family moved to Caribou, Aroostook County. The 1880 census showed them there with children Marcena (17), Mary E. (14), William B. (10), Leslie A. (8), Flora F. (6), and Albert (2). They were still in Caribou for the 1890 census of Union veterans, but by 1900 they had moved to New Sweden, Aroostook County, and had only daughter Effie (19) with them.

In 1900, they were in Washburn, Aroostook County. Moses died in 1911 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery Section 34 Lot 5, Washburn. Phoebe married Arthur S. Arnberg (1865-1927). She died in 1929, and is buried in Schoolhouse Cemetery, Rangeley, the same cemetery as her first child, Eva.

Can't track half the children. The William Abbott from Maine who married Ida Butterfield and lived in Minnesota was not this family's William.

Nancy M. Abbott (1839-1921)

Nancy married Ira D. Toothaker (1837-21 Sep 1864) about 1860. In the 1860 census, she was living with Ira and his parents in Phillips. It’s unclear whether they had children. Ira enlisted in Company F, 11th Maine Infantry, and died of combat wounds in 1864 at Fort Monroe, Virginia. He’s buried in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton City, Virginia.

Nancy married widower Silas Dunbar Reynolds (5 Jun 1825-14 Apr 1907/1908) in 1868, following the 1867 death of his first wife, Esther. Known children:

Fred L. (1869-1930) — m. Ella M. “Nellie” Wilcox on 3 Jun 1894

Walter Emerson (10 Jun 1871-2 Oct 1954) — m. Leona M. Sprague on 10 Jun 1897

Alice Mae “Allie” (Jan 1877-1956) — m. Frank Elmer Clark on 9 Sep 1896

The 1870 census for Lyndon, Aroostook County listed Nancy Reynolds, age 30, with husband Silas (45) and children Silas D. Jr. (19), George F. (17), Sarah A. (14), Mary E. (11), Lincoln (10), Ester P. (7), and a baby boy (1 month) whose name I can’t read but who must be Fred. The four older children were from Silas’s first marriage. Probably Lincoln and Ester were too, but I can’t be sure they weren’t Nancy’s children by Ira.

In 1880, like Nancy’s brother Moses, they were in Caribou, Aroostook County: Silas (55), Nancy (40), Silas D. Jr. (28), Esther (18), Fred I. (11), Emersen (9), and Alice (3).

In 1900 they were still in Caribou: Silas (75), Nancy (61), and Fred I. (31), plus Fred’s wife Ella and son D. W. Reynolds. The grandson is actually listed in the census as being named “D only W”.

Silas died in 1907 or 1908. Nancy died in Orange, Florida in 1921, and is buried in Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County, Maine, cemetery undetermined. [Caution: Some records of Nancy’s age mistakenly use her sister Mary’s 1845 birthdate. Her death record listed her date of birth as 27 Dec 1838, which I think is off by a year.]

Mary Matilda Abbott (1845-1916)

Mary Matilda married Henry Tibbetts (Dec 1836-25 Jun 1906). They lived in Rangeley. Known children:

Florian E. (25 Jul 1863-after 1930) — m. Minnie A. Oakes on 1 Oct 1889; m. Hattie I. Henderson Oakes on 19 Oct 1897

Marshall Herbert “Marshman” (26 Aug 1866-194x) — m. Julietta Winslow on 15 May 1900

Clara Ella (21 Mar 1868-15 May 1913) — m. George Ross on 10 May 1882

Huldah Etta (Aug 1870-19 Oct 1914) — m. William Henry Searles on 18 Mar 1888

Sherman Mecham (Feb 1873-10 Nov 1906)

Mabel P. (28 Mar 1876-18 Jul 1914) — m. Gustavus Augustus Johnson

Bertha Florence (Oct 1877-1935) — m. Frank Nathan Gile on 8 Jul 1894; m. Erwin Stillman Wilbur on 15 Oct 1904

Harvey Hannibal (Mar 1884-1957) — m. Annie Victoria Anderson on 19 Mar 1904; m. Catherine Bouchard “Kate” Violette in 1940

Mary died in 1916, after a hard ten years that had seen her lose her husband and four of her grown children. She’s buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley.

“Marshman”?

Louisa F. Abbott (1847-1895)

Louisa married David G. Harriman (30 May 1843-2 Jul 1920), son of David and Elmira Harriman, on 12 Apr 1865 in either Boxford or North Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts. They had one child I know of, born in North Andover:

Henrietta (28 May 1866-1866)

I can't find them in the 1870 census. There was a David G. Harriman in New York, but not enough data to say whether it was the same man. In 1880, Louisa was living alone in a boarding house in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and working in a wool mill. I don’t think this was a happy story. She died in 1895 in Lawrence, and is buried in North Andover, graveyard undetermined. As far as I can tell, David remained unmarried until his 1920 death in Boston.

There was a Lois Frances Abbott (1847-1914) from Oxford County, Maine. Sometimes people confuse the two.

Arabella Peary “Belle” Abbott (1849-1888)

Belle married Luther Nile (4 Dec 1837-18 Apr 1897), neé Hoar, son of Hinkley ancestors Joseph Nile (Hoar) and Hannah Brackett, in 1865. As noted elsewhere, Luther’s family had changed their name to get away from the jokes. They lived in Rangeley. Their children:

unnamed son (4 Feb 1868-4 Feb 1868)

Victor (6 Jul 1870-1 Jan 1897)

Martin Luther (23 Nov 1871-19 Sep 1952) — m. Minerva E. “Minnie” Berry on 1 Oct 1892

Joseph Abbott (25 Aug 1873-30 Dec 1964) — m. Mary Esther Howe on 1 Jun 1900

Sandy Brackett (24 May 1875-2 Dec 1905)

Hortense Belle “Hortie” (May 1878-4 Jan 1961) — m. Frank Darius Sampson on 3 Jun 1896; divorced; m. Howard Conant Pease on 21 Oct 1901

unnamed daughter (13 Oct 1880-13 Oct 1880)

Vinton Irwin (24 Oct 1883-22 May 1903)

Lois Pearl (4 Dec 1885-23 Apr 1952) — m. Locke Howard Pease on 25 Sep 1907; m. Charles J. Schneider on 30 Jan 1913

In the 1880 census for Rangeley, they had five children, Victor through Hortie. Belle died in 1888, and is buried in Nile Cemetery, 2029 Main Street, Rangeley. Luther died in 1897 in the West End area of Portland, and is buried with her.

The 1900 census found Sandy, a physician, in Pennsylvania; and Hortie, divorced with a young daughter, in Farmington, Maine. Vinton and Lois were nowhere in sight.

Almena V. “Minnie” Abbott (1851-1918)

Almena married Sedgeley Ross (21 Feb 1844-8 Mar 1913) in 1870. They lived in Rangeley. Known children:

Nellie E. (24 Feb 1872-1941) — m. Nathan S. Albee on 20 Apr 1890; divorced; m. Charles Earl Savage on 30 Sep 1903

Myrtie M. (5 Aug 1874-5 Jul 1958) — m. Harry B. Quimby on 21 Sep 1896

Jesse Warren (19 May 1878-28 Apr 1954) — m. Ada F. Blackwood on 4 Jul 1899

John S. (23 Aug 1886-21 Dec 1886)

Flossie Belle (9 Jan 1888-4 Apr 1978) — m. Wallace P. Hamm on 9 Sep 1908

Sedgeley John “John” (17 Sep 1890-16 May 1967) — m. Onie B. Gile on 23 Jan 1913

Sedgeley died in 1913. Almena died in 1918, reportedly of “senile gangrene in foot and leg”, although that was from a death record that claimed she died in 1922. They’re buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley.

Elverna “Verna” Abbott (1853-1877)

Verna’s short history is described in the account of the Hinkley-Abbott family.

Charles S. Abbott (1855-????)

Nothing about Charles past 1880.

Luella M. Abbott (1857-1908)

Luella has her own entry in the family tree.

John Abbott, Jr. (1862-1916)

John married Anna C. “Annie” McCubry (3 Feb 1868-1936) in 1885. They lived in Caribou, Aroostook County, Maine. Known children:

Annie Louise (9 May 1887-2 May 1968) — m. Ainslie Gibson Dow in 1911

Frank Harrison (6 Nov 1888-23 Jun 1968) — m. Adelma Estella Lafatty in 1909; m. Amber A. Currier on 21 Apr 1920

Lydia Pearl (Feb 1891-27 Mar 1915)

Herschel (4 Apr 1893-1893)

David Johnson (4 Sep 1895-20 Jun 1964) — m. Gladys Viola Blackstone on 16 Feb 1921

Harry E./C. (26 Apr 1897-8 Jun 1898)

Emma A. (27 Mar 1899-22 Dec 1972) — m. Andrew E. Skidgel on 26 Feb 1921

James Edward (25 Sep 1901-18 Aug 1970) — m. Lola E. Harris on 18 Jan 1923

Georgia H. (31 Jan 1904-22 Oct 1989) — m. Harold Frederick Newell on 3 Jul 1920

John died in 1916 in Presque Isle, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Caribou, Aroostook County. Annie remarried in 1918 to Henry Spear (1850-1940), and moved with her two youngest to his home in Perham, Aroostook County.

She was still with Henry in 1930, with son David and two of his sons also staying there. Annie died in 1936 and is buried with John.
