John Calvin Thompson “Calvin” PINE (7 May 1807-3 Oct 1888) +
Nancy CRUMBACK (~1809-1844)

Sarah Isabelle (11 Sep 1831-2 Jan 1923) — m. Jacob W. Clark on 14 Nov 1850; m. Archibald Burris Estes in Nov 1858

Rebecca (1834-25 Aug 1872) — m. Jacob H. Klingman in 185x

Susanna (11 Mar 1835-14 Apr 1908) — m. Moses James Innis on 1 Oct 1850

Phibe Ann (5 Nov 1838-18 Jul 1868) — m. John W. Northrup on 14 Feb 1855

Calvin John (29 Jan 1843-31 Mar 1932) — m. Sarah Allison about 1861; m. Melissa Coleman Hoover on 7 Aug 1872; divorced

Calvin was born probably in East Greenbush (East Albany), Rensselaer County, New York to John Pine and Annie Thompson. He was likely named for Calvin Thompson, a prominent early citizen of Sand Lake, Rensselaer County and possibly a relative on his mother’s side.

Nancy Crumback was born in Pennsylvania, daughter of Mennonites Henry T. Crumback and Mary Troup.

The Pine and Crumback families both moved to Oxford County, Ontario when Calvin and Nancy were children.

Calvin was a farmer and hoop-maker, and reportedly couldn’t write. A description found by his descendant Barbara J. Burtch Rogers in 1991 said he had curly, deep red-copper hair and was English-Irish. His daughter Sarah described her father as half French, and Nancy as German. Only that last is supported by other sources.

Calvin and Nancy married in 1830 or 1831 in Ontario. They had five children, according to both census data and their daughter Sarah’s much later recollections.

An account compiled by Barbara Rogers from old records added three more: Polly (6 Apr 1832-1892), Henry (17 Sep 1833-11 Jul 1839), and Sally (11 Sep 1834-????). Sally is clearly a misdated reference to Sarah. Polly correlates with one Mary Elizabeth “Polly” Pine (6 Apr 1831-22 Feb 1905), who married David Rosenburg in 1849 in Ontario and died in Texas. She lived in Kent County, Michigan after her marriage, and in 1860 had a Samuel J. Crumback living with her family, all of which is suggestive but not conclusive. I can find nothing at all on Henry. It’s not impossible that Henry and Polly were the children of Calvin and Nancy, but there’s no evidence, and their claimed dates of birth conflict with those of the known children.

“Cafone” and Nancy Pine appeared as witnesses to the 10 Feb 1839 marriage of John Pine and Charlotte “Cooty” (Côté) in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ontario. Despite the grotesque transcription, this was clearly Calvin and Nancy witnessing the remarriage of Calvin’s widower father, and the earliest documentation I have for either of them.

Per a genealogy.com post, Nancy died in 1844 when her daughter Phibe was “about 5”, which fits, although the same source has her being born in 1815, which is probably wrong. Her place of burial is unknown.

On 7 Apr 1845, per a family tree created in 1992 by Barbara Rogers, Calvin married Pheba Ann Belyea (2 or 24 Aug 1824-26 Jan 1889). Some records spell her family name “Bulyea” or “Bilyea”. She was the daughter of Henry Belyea (1791-17 Feb 1853) and Elizabeth Purdy (21 Jan 1793-13 Feb 1835) from Gagetown, Queens County, New Brunswick, who married there on 15 Feb 1813. She was born in either Gagetown or Westfield, Kings County, the same area that the Clarks came from. Calvin and Pheba went on to have 11 children, including one adopted son:

Elizabeth (21 Feb 1846-5 Jan 1936) — m. David Williams on 26 Jun 1868

Mary Jane (8 Feb 1848-16 Sep 1925) — m. Jacob Nathan Burtch on 17 Oct 1865

Jane (8 Nov 1849-19 Dec 1920) — m. Joseph Nelson Currant on 5 May 1867

Rachel (24 Jan 1852-18 Apr 1854)

Jemima A. “Mima” (29 Jun 1854-13 Feb 1937) — m. Levi John Snyder on 18 Sep 1870

Anna “Annie” (3 Oct 1855-12 Mar 1922) — m. Charles Griffith on 24 Oct 1876; m. Daniel Williams on 8 Jul 1884

Ida Emma (9 Jan 1859-1 May 1939) — m. Frank P. Jubb in 1876

Sophia (4 Mar 1861-8 Nov 1947) — m. Albert A. Thompson on 21 Sep 1879; m. Ephraim Hanigan on 12 Nov 1917

James Henry (23 Aug 1863-20 Dec 1941)

Phebe Irene (28 Feb 1869-27 Apr 1926) — m. John P. Jubb in 1884

John Henry (~1873-?3 Oct 1916?) (adopted)

In the 1851 Canada census, Calvin (45) and Phebe A. (28) Pine, both C. C. Baptist faith, were living in Blenheim with children Phebe (15), Calvin (10), Elizabeth (6), Mary (4), and Jane (3). Phebe and Calvin were Nancy’s youngest children; their ages appear to be two years off. Right next door were Nancy’s daughter Sarah and her husband Jacob Clark. I don’t know where Nancy’s daughter Rebecca was. Susanna was married already, but Rebecca wasn’t as far as I know. A different page of the census listed acres farmed for both families.

There’s a record of an 1853 land petition in Oxford County by Calvin Pine. A history of Lapeer County, Michigan, where Calvin’s brother Daniel and sisters Mary and Susan had moved with their families around 1836-1837, mentioned John Calvin T. Pine as a property owner in “Section 21” with a date of 17 Apr 1855. This suggests the family moved to Michigan in the years 1853-1855, but the children up through Ida (Jan 1859) were listed as born in Canada, so the move might have been as late as 1859-1860, or the family might not have all come at the same time. The Barbara Rogers account says they came in 1858 by horse and buggy.

The 1860 census listed the Pines in Almont Township, Lapeer County, Michigan: Calvin (52) and Phebe A. (36), plus children Elizabeth (14), Mary (12), Jane (10), Jemima (7), Anna (4), and Ida (1), all except Calvin born in Canada.

Daughter Sophia was subsequently born in 1861 in Imlay City, Lapeer County, a few miles north of Almont. In 1862, the family moved 80-some-odd miles further west to Brant Township, Saginaw County, Michigan. The land around Almont had been pretty well settled when they got there, so they were no doubt looking for better prospects. In Brant, they cleared land and built a log cabin on the bank of Bad River’s south fork, at the intersection of Gary Road and Steel Road. This location is several miles due west of Chesaning. The children attended the Limbocker school and Sunday school on Fowler Road. Calvin was a member of the school board in 1864 and 1865.

The 1870 census listed the family in Brant Township: J. C. T. Pine (63), wife Phebe A. (45), and children Jemima (16), Anna (14), Ida E. (12), Sophia (9), James H. (7), and Phebe J. (1). Also present were their daughter Elizabeth Williams (24) and her son John H. F. Williams (2), and Jemima’s soon-to-be husband Levi Snyder (21) working as a farm hand. Elizabeth’s husband David Williams (19) was living next door and working as a hoop-maker, which was Calvin’s trade as well.

The 1880 census showed the family still in Brant Township: Calvin (73), Pheba (55), James H. (16), Phebe I. (11), and John Henry (7, adopted). Daughter Jemima and her family were next door. This census recorded where people’s parents were from. Calvin’s were both from New York.

Calvin died of tuberculosis in October 1888. The death record named his parents as John and Annie Pine. The 13 Oct 1888 issue of the St. Charles Independent (St. Charles being the largest nearby town, about 15 miles to the northeast) gave his date of death as 3 Oct 1888, and gave an exact age implying a birthdate of 13 Mar 1807, which is consistent with his reported age in census records. However, his gravestone claims year of birth 1809. Pheba, Calvin’s wife of more than 40 years, lasted just another three months before succumbing to inflammation of the lungs.

John Calvin Thompson Pine, his second wife Pheba Ann, his sister Phebe Ann, her husband George Ward, and his daughters Mary Jane Pine Burtch and Ida Emma Pine Jubb are all buried in the Brant Township cemetery at the intersection of W. Brant Road and S. Brennan Road in Saginaw County, Michigan. Cemetery address seems to be 11047 South Brennan Road.

There were lots of Thompsons in Brant, Michigan and in Saginaw County generally. There might be a connection to Calvin’s mother.

Children of Calvin and Nancy

Sarah Isabelle Pine (1831-1923)

Sarah has her own entry in the family tree.

Rebecca Pine (1834-1872)

Rebecca married Ohio-born Jacob H. Klingman (27 Mar 1832-14 May 1915) in the mid- to late 1850s, probably after moving with her father and stepmother to Michigan. Their children:

Sarah Elizabeth (4 Aug 1858-1 Dec 1929) — m. Angus McLeod in 1877

Jacob Eby “Jake” (18 Feb 1861-2 Jan 1922) — m. Nellie M. Parker on 4 Jul 1883

Mary Ellen “Ella” (30 Apr 1865-7 Dec 1940) — m. Willis E. Bumford on 2 Mar 1881

Nancy (~1867-18xx) — m. Lawrence “Larry” O’Toole on 26 Jun 1883

David (27 Nov 1868 or 7 Dec 1869-25 May 1929 ) — m. Belle Lipscomb on 27 Sep 1890

unnamed infant (1872-1872)

Rebecca and Jacob settled in Gaines Township, Kent County, Michigan, some 100 miles west-southwest of her father but near her uncle James Crumback. The 1860 census showed them there, both supposedly age 28, with daughter Sarah and Jacob’s brother David.

The 1870 census for Gaines Township listed the woman of the Klingman household as Maggie (28), which is odd. Maybe Rebecca went by Maggie, normally a diminutive of Margaret, and the census got her age wrong by eight years? Hmm, unlikely. Rebecca died in 1872, probably in childbirth as her tombstone says “and infant”, and is buried in Gaines Cemetery, Cutlerville, Michigan.

Jacob moved in the 1870s to Odessa, Ionia County, Michigan, where the 1880 census found him with daughter Ella. Daughter Nancy was living with sister Sarah and her husband in Caledonia, Kent County, but listed as a niece for some reason. In 1910, Jacob was living with son Jake and family in Campbell, Ionia County. He died and was buried there in 1915.

Susanna Pine (1835-1908)

Susanna, who also went by Susan or Susie, married New Brunswick-born Scottish farmer Moses James Innis (23 Oct 1830-10 Dec 1910) supposedly on 1 Oct 1850, before her family moved to Michigan. Their children:

Emily/Emeline Rebecca (28 Oct 1853-5 Nov 1923) — m. Thomas Albert Chadwick in 1872; divorced?; m. John E. Ernst on 31 Mar 1908

Emma Alice “Alice” (14 Feb 1855-19 Nov 1941) — m. William Henry Chadwick on 31 Aug 1871; m. William Davis on 24 Mar 1920; m. Arthur Jackson on 10 Dec 1935

Martin (8 Dec 1856-15 Jan 1857)

Eva Lucinda (22 Apr 1859-19 Jun 1932) — m. James Moore on 28 Jul 1882

Eliza A. (12 Apr 1861-13 Jun 1936) — m. Joseph Dorland on 29 Apr 1878; m. August Theodor Selke on 1 Jan 1902; m. Peter Plant on 26 Nov 1914; m. Edward A. Shelman on 12 May 1925; poss. m. ??? Oullette

George Calvin (6 Aug 1864-18 Apr 1945) — m. Jennette Ella McCarty on 22 Aug 1883; m. Annie Morgan Barrklow in 1916; m. Anna C. Ruger on 13 Jun 1923

William Henry (14 Jun 1867-Dec 1956) — m. Alice Ella Harrison on 4 Jul 1888; m. Carolina Burtch on 14 Feb 1931; m. Adeline Windover Cobbledisk on 25 May 1931

Edward A. (22 Oct 1869-16 Jul 1901) — never married

Martin (1 Dec 1874-21 Dec 1874)

Lloyd Nelson (6 Jul 1881-1955) — m. Selena Pearl Grice on 2 Sep 1908

Shortly after the birth of their first child, they moved some 460 miles to Ottawa County, Michigan, to start a farm. It must not have gone well, because they returned to Ontario, settling in South Norwich, Oxford County south. In 1861, they had children Emily (8), Alice (7), and Lucinda (2). In 1871, there were Emily B. (18), Emmie (15), Evie L. (12), Eliza A. (9), George C. (6), William (3), and “Edwin” (1). In 1881, they had just William H. (13) and Edward A. (11), plus Lucy Innis (73), presumably Moses’s mother. The last child, Lloyd, was born later that year.

They returned to Michigan in 1882, settling in Forester Township, two miles west of Richmondville in Sanilac County. The 1900 census showed sons Edward and Lloyd still with them, and said they had eight children, all living. That leaves out the two Martins, although I’ve found no records of the first Martin. Susanna died in 1908 and is buried in East Marion Cemetery, Sanilac County, Michigan. Her tombstone gives 1837 as year of birth, and her death certificate says 1833, but she told the 1900 census 1835, which agrees with the ages she gave in the 1861, 1871, and 1881 Canadian censuses. The 1910 census showed Moses (79) living with son William & family in Sanilac County. He died later that year.

There are records for daughters of Moses Innis and Susanna Pine that appear to be Eliza under other names: a “Minnie Innes Darland” who married Peter Plant in Detroit in 1914, claiming year of birth 1872; a “Louisa Innis Darling” who married Edward Shelman in Detroit in 1925, claiming year of birth 1869 and this as her second marriage (Edward’s son Ross had previously married Eliza’s daughter Cora Dorland); and a “Minnie Oullette” who died in Detroit in 1936, initially recorded as born 9 Aug 1868 but findagrave.com says 1861. There are no records for the existence of another daughter who could have been this Minnie or Louisa. Furthermore, there are records that indicate Eliza sometimes went by Louisa and Minnie – e.g., the 1910 census, and the 1924 wedding of one of her daughters. The records of her various marriages helpfully gave the names of her parents, which stitches her history together.

Phibe Ann Pine (1838-1868)

Phibe married John Worden William Northrup (20 May 1832-26 Feb 1901), son of Gabriel Worden Northrup (1804-1883) and Mary Ann Clark (1812-1913) and therefore the nephew of Jacob Clark, her sister Sarah’s husband, on 14 Feb 1855 in Blenheim Township, Ontario. They had nine or possibly ten children:

John Calvin “Willie” (23 Dec 1855-14 Oct 1934) — m. Flora F. Ashby on 25 Dec 1878

Laura (~1856-1860)

Rosa (18 Jul 1857-19 Jul 1857)

Elva Ann (18 Jun 1858-1 Oct 1889) — m. Horace Will Howard on 11 Feb 1875

F. Deette (14 Sep 1859-14 Sep 1860) — poss. same as Laura

George Alfred (4 Jan 1861-26 Apr 1949) — m. Joella Davisson on 14 Feb 1884; m. V. L. Kidwell Feldmeier on 24 Jul 1916

Rose Altha (1862-30 Jan 1921) — m. Frank Magoon Martin on 4 Jul 1878; m. James F. Zediker

Josephine (3 Aug 1863-5 Oct 1864)

Charity Ann (18 May 1865-27 Feb 1961) — m. Horace Will Howard on 14 Dec 1885

Frances Lenore (25 Jan 1867-12 Nov 1936) — m. Willis Boone Beasley on 9 Mar 1884

They moved with Phibe’s sister Sarah and John’s uncle Jacob Clark to Michigan in the early to mid 1850s, and joined them again for the move to Arkansas in 1856. In 1859, Phibe and John, who was described as having itchy feet, headed west from Arkansas for the newly created state of Oregon. Two of their children, Laura and Deette, died on the Oregon Trail. Per family accounts, Laura is buried on East Birch Creek near Pilot Rock, Oregon, and Deette by the Snake River on East Birch Creek, Idaho. A different source says this was all one child, Laura Deete Northrup, begging the question of why anyone would name a child “Deete”. Or “Deette”.

The family settled in Umatilla County, which at the time was part of Oregon. Daughter Josephine died of burns in 1864. Phibe died of tuberculosis in 1868, and is buried with Josephine in Mountain View Cemetery, Walla Walla, Washington. Together with her stepmother and her aunt who married George Ward, that makes three women of this family who carried the name Phoebe Ann Pine, but with three different spellings.

The 1870 census showed the family, without Phibe, in Walla Walla, Umatilla County, Oregon, with John claiming to be from Georgia to throw off any genealogists on his trail. John Northrup married Mary Kinslo (~1845-????) from Ireland on 12 Feb 1870. They reportedly lived in Grant County, still part of Oregon at the time, and had one child:

E. Laura (20 Nov/Dec 1870-1900) — m. Frank Gleim

John and Mary divorced before the year was out, and Mary took daughter Laura with her. John married Melvina Catherine “Catie” Dillman (Oct 1844-28 Jul 1903) from Missouri on 11 Feb 1875 in Nez Perce County, Idaho, in a double ceremony with his daughter Elva Ann and her husband Horace Will Howard. John and Catie had one child, a boy:

W. E. (1876-15 Mar 1876)

John and Catie lived at first in Nez Perce County, where the 1880 census showed them with John’s daughters Charity and Lenore. John again said he was from Georgia, and added that his parents were from North Carolina and Georgia, claims unsupported by other evidence.

The state of Washington was formed out of Oregon in 1889. John eluded the census one last time in 1900, and died of syphilis in 1901 in Okanogan County, Washington. He’s buried in Hartline Cemetery, Grant County, Washington.

In 1903, a neighbor murdered Catie in her home over a land dispute. She’s buried in Hartline Cemetery also, without dates or marker.

Northrup Canyon State Park near Grand Coulee Dam in Grant County is named for John, and includes the remains of the homestead he built there in the 1870s. A book called Best Dog Hikes – Washington by Lisa Wogan (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017) contains some details of John’s story, with apparent inaccuracies.

Calvin John Pine (1843-1932)

Calvin appeared as a hired hand to Benjamin & Caroline Allison in the 1860 census of Lapeer County, Michigan, which incorrectly said he was born in Michigan. He married their daughter Sarah Allison (~1845-1887) probably in 1861. He and Sarah had three children:

Caroline M. “Carrie” (4 Jul 1862-25 Jul 1892) — m. Perrin Crawford on 13 Oct 1878

Clara I. (4 Jul 1863-20 Jul 1934) — m. Gilbert Marshall Stevenson on 7 Apr 1881

George B. (Sep 1866-1 Feb 1921) — m. Nettie L. Olney on 3 Apr 1885

Calvin served under a Captain Strickland in Company F of the 29th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment from October 1864 to September 1865. His unit saw action at Decatur, Alabama and Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Calvin and Sarah separated in the late 1860s, details unknown, and Sarah remarried to one John McGregor in 1869. In 1870 Carrie and George were living with their mother’s parents in Lapeer County, and I can’t find Calvin and daughter Clara, although Barbara Rogers’s research indicated that he was working at a sawmill in Saginaw.

In 1872, Calvin married Melissa Hoover (9 Dec 1837-22 Oct 1911), nee Rachel Melissa Coleman, in Gaines, Michigan. They had no children together. The 1880 census showed Calvin with Melissa and her son John Hoover (10), son George with his now-married sister Carrie, and daughter Clara with the Jenks family, all in Lapeer County.

Calvin and Melissa divorced before 1900, and she went back to being Melissa Hoover. (One of her sons later married a grand-daughter of John Taylor Crumback. Minor coincidence.) In 1910, Calvin showed up living with Clara and her husband Gilbert in Corwith, Otsego County, Michigan. He told the census his mother was from Germany, which she wasn’t – but then, he never got to know her. His 1912 pension record described him as 5'4", blue eyes, gray hair, suffering from senility and other ailments, and listed son George (1706 West 3rd Street, Duluth, Minnesota) as next of kin.

However, Calvin survived until 1932, outliving George. He’s buried in Vanderbilt Cemetery, Vanderbilt, Otsego County, Michigan. His effects were sent to his daughter Clara, who was also buried at Vanderbilt Cemetery when she died two years later.

Children of Calvin and Phebe

Elizabeth Pine (1846-1936)

Elizabeth married Canadian-born David Williams (20 Apr 1850-13 Aug 1922) on 26 Jun 1868, four days before the birth of their first child. She was 22, he was 18. They went on to have five children:

John Henry Frederick “Fred” (30 Jun 1868-8 Mar 1935) — m. Netila Ormison on 18 Dec 1904

Sarah M. (9 Feb 1872-30 May 1935) — m. George W. Clement on 2 Sep 1892; m. Claud Thomas Keeney on 12 Aug 1901; m. Nick Ardelean on 8 Sep 1919; m. ??? Ransom

Colin (10 Feb 1875-6 Apr 1947) — m. Nellie Arvilla Cole on 1 Oct 1901

Mary Rose (12 Feb 1878-9 Jun 1961) — m. Louis E. DeLong on 6 Apr 1898

John A. (8 Feb 1880-14 Jan 1950) — m. Bessie Bentley on 14 Jan 1903; m. Emma C. Conklin on 31 Aug 1909; m. Priscilla A. Amidon on 24 Sep 1925; divorced

In 1870 Elizabeth and son John H. F. (2) were living with her parents in Brant Township, Michigan, while David, a hoop-maker, lived next door. By 1880, the family had a farm of their own in Brant.

By 1900, they were living in Bancroft, Shiawassee County, Michigan, some 30 miles south of Brant, with granddaughter Alice Clement (6) and Elizabeth’s younger brother James H. Pine (37). They were still there when son Fred married in 1904. In 1910, David (59) and Elizabeth (61) were living in Lansing, with Fred & family next door. David died in 1922. His profession was listed as machinist.

By the 1930 census, Elizabeth (84) was living with her daughter Mary and family in Watertown, northwest of Lansing. Son Fred (Henry F.) was still in Lansing in 1930 with his wife and two children. Elizabeth died of advanced atherosclerosis on 5 Jan 1936 in Watertown. The death was reported by her daughter Mary. She’s buried with David in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lansing, Ingham County.

Mary Jane Pine (1848-1925)

Mary Jane married Jacob Nathan Burtch (10 Apr 1845-1921), son of Hiram Burtch and Rachel Hull, in 1865. Nathan had enlisted in Company E of the 14th Michigan Infantry early in the Civil War, but was discharged when the Army learned he was under age. Mary Jane and Nathan lived at 16318 Ring Road in Brant Township, Saginaw County. Known children:

Etta Mary (18 Oct 1866-14 Feb 1910) — m. Perry L. Cooper in 1889

George Robert (21 Oct 1868-1942) — m. Myra Elizabeth Jones or Kenauf in 1905

Minnie E. (1873-1959) — m. Robert Dupee on 18 Jun 1892

Archie Louis (14 Aug 1875-16 Oct 1948) — m. Jessie May Pierce on 19 Dec 1900

Hiram Nathan (12 Apr 1878-7 Oct 1901) — m. Isabella M. Passmore on 26 Dec 1900

Byron (1880-1881)

Charles William (16 Sep 1883-26 Feb 1951) — m. Tessie Mae Eccles on 8 Jan 1921

Benjamin Leslie (3 Feb 1886-20 Jun 1963) — m. Edith Mae Crites on 26 Dec 1911

Myrtle (1 Oct 1888-10 Dec 1929) — m. Carl Tausch

Nathan died in 1921. Mary Jane moved to South Street in Chesaning, Saginaw County to make it easier for the children of her daughter Myrtle, who was living with her, to attend school in the winter. She kept the farm, planning to return to it, but died of a burst bladder in 1925. She’s buried in Brant Township Cemetery, the same place as her husband and parents.

Jane Pine (1849-1920)

Jane married Joseph Nelson Current (1844-1921) in 1867. They lived in Brant Township, Saginaw County. Their children:

Phoebe Jane (22 Feb 1868-10 Dec 1953) — m. Charles J. Buck

Durward Nelson (11 Oct 1869-1958) — m. Mary Jane Shepard on 28 Sep 1899

Charles James (21 Jul 1889-15 Aug 1940) — m. Cora Bell Shephard

Mary L. (16 Jun 1891-1963) — m. Burnie E. Clark in 1907

Jane died of heart disease and pneumonia in 1920, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Saint Charles, Saginaw County, Michigan. Joseph died the following year, and is buried with her. Some of their children spelled their surname “Currant”, and one (Edwin) seems to have gone with “Curran”.

Rachel Pine (1852-1854)

Rachel is named in family accounts, but there’s no record of her birth or death.

Jemima A. “Mima” Pine (1854-1937)

Jemima, who apparently took to being called Mima only later in life, married Levi John Snyder (15 Jul 1848-13 Nov 1930) from Vernon, Shiawassee County, Michigan in 1870. He had been a hired hand on her family’s farm. One source says his middle name was Jesse. They settled on a farm immediately west of Jemima’s parents in Brant, Saginaw County. They had five children:

Velma A. (22 Feb 1871-1 Nov 1963) — m. Frederick H. Server on 18 Nov 1889

William Arthur (8 Aug 1873-17 Sep 1941) — m. Sarah C. Sutton on 31 Aug 1898

Louisa (1874-~1880)

George Ernest (6 Jul 1875-19 Mar 1965) — m. Cora Elizabeth Beard on 29 Nov 1897; m. Gertrude Brackin Mansfield on 19 Aug 1947

Reuben Lacount (18 Apr 1878-29 Oct 1953) — m. Sylvia Whitford on 15 Jun 1902

There’s a record of a child named Levi, born 26 Jun 1875. I believe that’s a mistaken reference to George. The family eluded the 1900 census, although son George turned up that year in Illinois with a wife and baby.

By 1910, Jemima and Levi were living, sans children, in Los Angeles, California. Sons William and George came to California as well, while Velma and Reuben remained in Michigan.

In 1920, Jemima, going by Mima to avoid the scrutiny of genealogists in the tradition of her half-brother-in-law John W. Northrup, was living with son William and his daughter in Fresno and claiming to be widowed. However, the 1930 census showed Levi, still alive and in the Los Angeles area, also claming to be widowed, so maybe there were some hard feelings there. When Levi died later that same year, the death record correctly listed his status as “separated”. He was cremated at Pomona Crematory. Mima died on 13 Feb 1937 in Fresno, and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Fresno.

Anna “Annie” Pine (1855-1922)

Annie married Michigan-born farmer Charles Griffith (~1846-17 Feb 1916) in 1876. Some records spell the name “Griffus” or “Griffuf”. They settled in Brant Township, and had four children:

May G. (24 Mar 1877-18 Oct 1954) — m. John Richardson on 10 Jun 1899

Margaret E. “Maggie” (8 Oct 1879-26 Sep 1925) — m. John Steven Tanks on 26 Jul 1899

Catherine (1880-1888)

George C. (25 Feb 1881-after 1910) — m. Minnie Young on 25 Sep 1905

The marriage ended in the 1880s, details unknown. Annie married Canada-born Daniel Williams (Sep 1832-190x) in 1884 in Saginaw County. They had two more children:

James D. (17 Dec 1885-28 Oct 1972)

Benjamin Oliver (24 Jul 1891-13 Jun 1947) — m. Nellie Wagner on 9 Mar 1918

They were in Wheeler Township, Gratiot County with both sons for the 1900 census, which noted that Annie had six children, all living. Then what about Catherine? Dan died between then and 1910, in which year Annie was living alone in St. Charles, Saginaw County and supporting herself with odd jobs.

Annie was living at 702 North Warner Street in Bay City, Bay County, Michigan when she died of broncho-pneumonia in 1922. Her death was reported by her daughter Maggie, who lived in the same area. She’s buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bay City. The gravestone has year of birth as 1856, but Annie told the 1900 census 1855.

Ida Emma Pine (1859-1939)

Ida married Michigan native Frank P. Jubb (27 Apr 1857-24 Feb 1912) in 1876. Their children:

Myrtle Maud (26 Sep 1879-10 Mar 1923) — m. William Hammill Aldrich on 26 Mar 1902

Bertha (6 Dec 1882-1 May 1896)

Hattie L. (24 Mar 1890-19 Apr 1910)

Edward Colonel (4 Sep 1892-21 Jul 1951) — m. Katherine Cecilia McCarthy on 14 Jun 1929

Harold B. (17 Feb 1898-after 1916)

The 1880 census showed them in Chapin, Saginaw County with Maud (supposedly 2). The 1900 census had them in Brant. Frank died in 1912.

In 1920, Ida was living with son Ed in Jonesfield. In 1930, she was living alone in Merrill, Saginaw County. Ida died in 1939, and is buried with Frank and daughter Hattie in the Brant Township Cemetery, the same place as her parents.

Sophia Pine (1861-1947)

Sophia married Albert A. Thompson (14 Feb 1856-3 Feb 1915) from Maine on 21 Sep 1879. They lived in Alaiedon Township, Ingham County, Michigan. Their children:

Carrie Beatrice (6 Sep 1884-12 Jun 1938) — m. David Elverson Rhoads in Sep 1898; m. Joseph Bert Rainwater on 8 May 1915

Howard William (15 Feb 1887-14 Jul 1963) — m. Vina Zimmer on 1 Oct 1914; m. Martha Wolfe in 1941

Garr Albert, Sr. (20 Sep 1889-9 Feb 1963) — m. Mabel E. Monaghan on 15 Dec 1915; m. Gladys Irene Reetz in 1954

George Park (25 Dec 1894-9 May 1972) — m. Mable Emma Foster; m. Josephine Johnson on 20 Jun 1953

Frances A. (15 Apr 1896-28 Aug 1973) — m. John Ferdinand Gohr on 19 Dec 1914

Margaret Faye (21 Aug 1901-17 Apr 1926) — m. Guy Henry Williams on 1 Jan 1918

Theodore R. (?7 Nov 1904?-?31 May 1982?) — poss. m. Rita ???

B. Irene (15 Apr 1906-18 May 1917)

Albert died in 1915. Sophia married Canada-born Ephraim Hanigan (9 May 1863-12 Dec 1932) on 12 Nov 1917. In 1920 she was living with him and son Theodore in East Lansing.

The marriage didn’t last. By 1930, she was living with her daughter Frances and family in Lansing. Sophia died in 1947 in Niles, Berrien County, Michigan. She’s buried with Albert and their daughter Margaret in Leek Cemetery, Okemos, Ingham County, Michigan.

James Henry Pine (1863-1941)

It appears that James never married. There have been claims that he was the father of Ruth Pine (1883-1954) of Rome, Lawrence County, Ohio. There was a James H. Pine of the right age who married Rhoda Reed (~1865-????) on 3 Dec 1884 in Lawrence County, Ohio, but there’s no evidence it was this family’s James Pine. Anyway, Ruth Pine said her father was from Ohio.

The family story is that James “went out west”. If so, he came back. By the 1900 census, James was living with his sister Elizabeth and her family in Shiawassee Township, Michigan. James claimed to be single, not widowed or divorced, another reason to doubt the Ohio angle. He and Elizabeth said their father was born in Vermont rather than in New York, but there’s no other support for that. James was missing again from the 1910 census. The 1920 and 1940 censuses showed him as a bachelor farmer in Maple Ridge Township, Beltrami County, Minnesota. He died in 1941 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Burial details are unknown.

Phoebe Irene Pine (1869-1926)

Phoebe married John Potter Jubb (13 Apr 1858-22 Dec 1907), brother of her sister Ida’s husband, in 1884. In 1900 they were living in Brant Township. Known children:

Inez Esther (21 Sep 1885-11 Dec 1981) — m. Henry Albert Schultz on 20 Apr 1905

Bessie May (21 Aug 1888-10 Jul 1909) — m. Claude Thayer on 25 Nov 1905

Verne Allen (16 Jan 1891-18 Nov 1910) — d. of smallpox

Floyd Henry (24 Feb 1892-27 Jan 1980) — m. Elizabeth Fath on 20 Apr 1927

boy (14 Jul 1896-15 Jul 1896)

girl (12 Nov 1898-189x)

There might have been a daughter named Vera who married someone named Snyder. John died in 1907. Phoebe died in Chesaning, Saginaw County in 1926, and is reportedly buried in Brant Cemetery, Saginaw County.

John Henry Pine (~1873-?1916?)

John was adopted. He was reportedly a grandson, with the original surname Williams. One account conflates him with Elizabeth’s son John Henry Frederick Williams, but the 1880 census shows them both, so, no. Maybe he was a son of Annie’s second husband Daniel Williams by a previous wife?

I haven’t been able to find him with certainty after 1880, when he was living with Calvin and Pheba. A John H. Pine from Michigan, age 35, appeared in the 1910 census for Buffalo, New York. He claimed both his parents were from Michigan. He had married Myrtle Frances from Canada about 1904, and was working as a steward on a lake boat. This man reportedly had a son named Robert Francis Pine (1916-1917), died of stomach cancer in Buffalo on 3 Oct 1916, and is buried in Buffalo Cemetery.

Some Grandchildren

Elva Ann Northrup (1858-1889)

Phibe’s daughter Elva Ann, born in what was then Fulton County, Arkansas, survived the Oregon Trail with her parents in 1859-1860. She married Horace Will Howard (3 Sep 1855-1 Sep 1934) from Michigan on 11 Feb 1875 in Nez Perce County, Idaho, in a double ceremony with her father and his third bride. Known children:

Eva Ann (5 Dec 1875-23 Feb 1973) — m. William Andrew Mullins on 22 Aug 1893

Pearl E. (12 Jun 1877-11 Mar 1957) — m. William A. Hoagland on 19 Aug 1896

Frank Grace (11 Dec 1878-24 Dec 1963) — m. Frank Gordon McKimmins on 11 Dec 1896

Lena R. (21 Jun 1882-6 Mar 1951) — m. Dr. Eugene M. Snodgrass on 9 Jul 1902

Walter St. Clair (1 May 1885-16 May 1937) — m. Olive May Brown on 7 Sep 1907

The 1880 census showed them living next door to Horace’s parents in Moscow, Nez Perce County (later Latah County): Horace (26) and “Emma” (21), plus children Eva (4), Purley (2), and Frank (1). Note that Frank was a girl. What were her parents thinking?

In 1885, Horace married Elva Ann’s younger sister Charity. It’s unclear whether there was a divorce first, but Elva Ann lived until 1889, in which year she died of typhoid fever. She’s buried in Moscow Cemetery as Elva A. Howard.

The 1900 census showed three of Elva Ann’s children in California.

Elva Ann had a cousin of about the same age, also born in Arkansas, named Elva Ann Clark.

Charity Ann Northrup (1865-1961)

Phibe’s daughter Charity married Horace Will Howard, her sister’s husband, on 14 Dec 1885. They moved to what is now Washington state. Their children:

Sierra Nevada (30 Aug 1886-23 Jan 1957) — m. William J. Maguire on 6 Dec 1905; m. Walter A. Donaldson on 1 Oct 1938

Clara Alice (7 Dec 1887-19 May 1979) — m. Fred F. Richardson on 27 Apr 1906

Horace William, Jr. (5 Jun 1890-12 Mar 1963) — m. Violet Irene Farnsworth on 3 Jul 1909

Sterling Dewey (28 Jul 1894-29 Jul 1898)

Marian Imogene (14 Dec 1904-11 Jan 1999) — m. Charles D. James in 192x

In the 1900 census, Horace and Charity were in North Colfax, Whitman County, Washington with their three surviving children, all born in Washington. In 1910, they were still there with just daughter Marian. In 1920, Charity and Horace still had Marian with them. Findagrave.com incorrectly lists the stillborn 1911 son of Horace, Jr. as Horace, Sr.’s child.

Horace died in 1934 and is buried in Colfax Cemetery, Colfax, Whitman County, Washington. Charity died in 1961, and is buried with Horace and their son Sterling.

Some Great-Grandchildren

Eva Ann Howard (1875-1973)

Eva married William A. Mullins (1867-1948) from Kentucky in 1893. They lived in Mountain Home, Idaho in the 1890s, and sometime after 1897 moved to Los Angeles, California. Children were:

Fla Graves (27 Aug 1894-14 May 1929) — m. Gladys Luella Rank on 19 Apr 1917

Dale Gatewood (16 Jan 1897-21 Feb 1991) — m. Edith Olive Bostwick on 24 Aug 1918

Vernon Howard (23 Jun 1908-????) — m. Margaret Elizabeth Gossom on 14 Aug 1934

The census for 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 found them still in Los Angeles. William died in 1948, and is buried in the Glen Haven Memorial Park, Sylmar, Los Angeles County. Eva Ann died in 1973. I don’t know where she’s buried.

Pearl E. Howard (1877-1957)

Pearl married William A. Hoagland (Apr 1866-1928) from Michigan in 1896. They had three children:

Gretchen (9 Dec 1899-9 May 1999)

Gladys (16 Apr 1904-23 Mar 1979)

John Herbert (27 Apr 1910-22 Feb 1993) — m. Erma J. ???; m. Mildred P. ???

In 1900, they were living in Alameda Township, Alameda County, California, with Pearl’s younger sister Lena. They later lived in Washington, where their daughter Gladys was born. In 1910 they were in Warren, Converse County, Wyoming, where their son John was born. In 1920 they were in Seattle, Washington with all three children.

They returned to California in the 1920s. William died in 1928, and is buried in Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California. The 1930 census showed Pearl in Gilroy with children Gretchen and John. She was still there in 1940, with John and his wife. A 1948 record showed her as a passenger on the ship S.S. Fort Townshend, arriving in New York from Bermuda. She died in 1957, and is buried with William.

Frank Grace Howard (1878-1963)

Despite the first name, Frank, whom I shall call Grace to minimize confusion, was a girl. She married Frank Gordon McKimmins (23 Oct 1871-11 Oct 1947) from Utah on 22 Dec 1896 in Elmore, Idaho. Yep, Frank G. plus Frank G. They had two children, the first born in Washington and the second in Utah:

Elva T. (6 Sep 1897-30 Jul 1978) — m. William Ralph Paske in 192x

Mark (28 Nov 1899-25 Sep 1981) — m. Alice Marie Pedersen on 1 Aug 1925

They moved to California after 1900. The 1910 through 1940 census records showed them living in Oakland. The kids married and moved out in the 1920s.

Frank died in 1947. Grace died in Berkeley in 1963. Their burial locations are undetermined.

Lena R. Howard (1882-1951)

Lena was staying with her sister Pearl in California in 1900. On 9 Jul 1902, she married Idaho-born Eugene Munn Snodgrass (4 Jun 1881-15 Oct 1956) in Albion, Idaho. They had three children:

Karl Howard (7 Jun 1905-21 Jun 2000) — m. Gladys McKinley on 5 Jun 1928

John S. Howard “Jack” (13 Jan 1912-6 Jul 1999) — m. Virginia Beatrice Tibbs on 10 Jun 1935

Walter Howard (15 Jun 1919-22 Jul 2002) — m. Doris Hungerford

Eugene became a doctor. They remained in Jerome County, Idaho. Lena died in 1951 and is buried in Jerome Cemetery there. Eugene died in Dallas, Texas in 1956, probably while staying with son Karl, and is buried with Lena.

Sierra Nevada Howard (1886-1957)

Nevada, daughter of Horace W. Howard and Charity Ann Northrup, married William J. Maguire (10 Jun 1875-21 Aug 1931) from Maryland on 6 Dec 1905 in Colfax, Washington. Known children:

Mary Catherine (15 Nov 1906-12 Nov 1975) — m. Chauncy B. Kenedy on 28 Feb 1928

Margaret H. (1909-????)

William died in 1931. On 1 Oct 1938, Nevada married Walter Alverdo Donaldson (21 Mar 1883-15 Dec 1966) in Spokane, Washington.

Nevada died in 1957 and is buried in Colfax Cemetery, Colfax, Whitman County, Washington. Both of her husbands are buried there as well.
