John, Jr. (6 Dec 1830-21 Nov 1913) — m. Elizabeth Jane Smith about 1851

John PINE + Charlotte CÔTÉ (~Sep 1805-4 Apr 1886) on 10 Feb 1839

no known children

John was born in New York, most likely Albany County or Rensselaer County just east of Albany. He was reportedly a hatter as well as a farmer. His parents might have been James Pine and Mary Ann Buckhout, who lived in Pittstown, Rensselaer County. However, there’s only one source that makes this claim, it offers no documentation, and there’s reason to doubt it: other sources that document this couple’s children don’t mention a John born ~1781, and do list another son born about that time.

Annie was probably born in New York also. Her parents are unknown, and questions remain about her last name. There were some prominent Thompsons in 18th century Rensselaer County.

The couple married around 1805. Their son John Calvin Thompson Pine was born probably in East Albany (Greenbush), New York. Their daughter Mary was also born in New York.

Sometime after Mary’s birth, the family moved to Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, not to be confused with the Blenheim in Kent County, Ontario, many miles further west. John built a one-family log house on concession 5, lot 7.

There’s no record of Annie’s death. A gravestone in Riverside Baptist Cemetery, Richwood, Oxford County is said to be hers but is too worn and faded to be sure. Findagrave.com claims 1839 as her year of death, which is unlikely. The death record of John’s youngest child John Pine, Jr. named his mother as Anna Biergdorf from Pennsylvania, suggesting Annie died in the late 1820s. It’s possible that this was a mistaken recollection by one of John, Jr.’s family, as there’s no other record for an Anna Biergdorf. It’s also possible that Mary Anna Thompson was the fiction, and an Anna “Annie” Biergdorf was the original wife and the mother of all seven children. I haven’t found any records that can resolve the question. A family tree compiled by descendants of Calvin’s daughter Mary Jane Pine Burtch listed Calvin’s mother as “Anna Thompson”, but put “Thompson” in parentheses with a question mark over it. Calvin’s 1888 death record listed his mother as “Annie Pine”, which doesn’t move the needle.

Anyway, if Anna Biergdorf was real, she died in the 1830s, because John Pine and Charlotte Côté, both of Blenheim, were married in the London district of Ontario on 10 Feb 1839. The record shows a Nancy and “Cafone” Pine as witnesses. Clearly that’s son Calvin and his wife Nancy. Charlotte’s surname in the wedding record is listed as Cooty, but clues from familysearch.org and findagrave.com indicate she was the Charlotte who was supposedly born 15 Apr 1804 in the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Québec, Québec, and that she had daughters named Lizena, Jane, and Emeline Côté from a previous marriage.

The 1842 Canadian census appears not to have reached Oxford County. That, or it’s just not online.

On 26 Nov 1849, John witnessed the marriage of Henry Rupert (1819-16 Aug 1891) and Charlotte’s daughter Emeline Côté (22 Jan 1828-17 Jun 1902) in Blenheim. The wedding record turned the Côté surname into Cody, which I suppose is better than Cooty. Later records made it out to be Coty or Cotey.

The 1851 census of Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ontario found John Pine (71), religion Christian Conference Baptist, with wife Charlotte (46). With them were John’s son John, Jr. (22), and grandson Levi (14), the son of Daniel Pine (who had died) and Charity Sophia Churchill (who had recently remarried). The household also had Francis Brooksbank (4), son of Charlotte’s late daughter Lizena Côté Brooksbank and her husband Roger; and John Jr.’s future wife Elizabeth Smith (18), daughter of Patrick and Sarah Smith of Blenheim. I guess Elizabeth was there to help out Charlotte.

The 1861 census for Blenheim Township listed John (80, farmer, born in US) and Charlotte (56, born Canada), plus Charlotte’s grandson Francis Brooksbanks (13, born Canada), Thomas Smith (17, born US), and Susan ?Sikes? (17, born Canada). Thomas might have been a relative of Elizabeth, but the 1851 census didn’t show her having a brother of that age or that name. John, Jr. and family were next door, which fits with the record that John Pine and John Pine, Jr. owned Con. 5 lot 7 and Con. 5 lot 8, respectively, in Blenheim Township.

John, Sr. died in 1864, and is buried next to the grave believed to be that of his first wife in the Riverside Baptist cemetery near Drumbo, Oxford County. The cemetery is the northwest corner of Lucy Road and Township Road 5, just west of the Nith River, east of Drumbo, and northwest of Paris. From Brantford, head west on Highway 403 (Alexander Graham Bell Parkway) about 11 miles; exit north onto Route 25 (Middle Townline Road); where it ends at Route 2, dogleg left to pick up Oxford Road 3 north (Main Street S); after about 3 miles, turn right onto Township Road 5, and continue for 5.5 km.

Charlotte was living with her stepson John Pine, Jr. in 1871. I can’t find her in the 1881 census. She died in 1886. The death certificate listed old age as the cause, and John Pine of Wolverton as the informant. She’s buried with John Sr.

Children

John Pine’s second, third, and fourth children married three of the children of David Churchill (17 Mar 1768-19 May 1821) and Zerviah Leach (14 Oct 1772-????). David and Zerviah both came from Litchfield, Connecticut, but married in 1797 in Fairfax, Vermont, where the 1800 and 1810 censuses show them. At some point they must have moved to Ontario. David died back in Connecticut.

John Calvin Thompson Pine (1807-1888)

Calvin has his own entry in the family tree.

Mary Pine (1809-18??)

Mary married Levi Churchill (24 Aug 1806-16 Jan 1891) from Fairfax, Vermont, reportedly on 4 Mar 1830. One record says they married in Connecticut, where the Churchills came from, but I’ve seen no evidence for this. Levi’s & Mary’s children included:

John P. (29 Dec 1831-25 Dec 1908) — m. Lucia Bisbee Caster on 4 Apr 1890

Susan Malinda (~1833-14 Mar 1924) — m. William Whiting on 7 Sep 1855

Cyrus (1835-????) — died young

Lucius (1837-????) — died young

Eliza (~1841-????) — died young

Charles Lemon (19 Dec 1842-8 Feb 1932) — m. Jane Margaret Flansburg on 22 Feb 1870

Mary Louisa (19 Dec 1845-5 Feb 1935) — m. Peter Hollenbeck on 24 Feb 1872

Orpha Jane (23 Dec 1846-1 Jan 1934) — m. William Oliver Dayton on 26 Mar 1870

George Theodore (20 Mar 1853-????) — m. Minnie ??? about 1878; m. Clara Belle Caster on 21 Oct 1888

Mary & Levi settled in Almont, Lapeer County, Michigan, about 1836. Some of their kin also moved to Lapeer County around the same time, with more of them coming in later years. (The Erie Canal was completed in 1825, but it seems to have been Michigan’s statehood in Jan 1837 that really drew immigrants from the east.)

The 1850 census listed them with children John (17), Malinda (15), Charles (7), Mary L. (5), and Orpha J. (3). They were still in Almont in 1860, 1870, and 1880. By the 1880 census, Levi & Mary were living with son Theodore & family, plus son John. When Levi died in 1891, the record described him as married, not widowed, but another account claims Mary died in 1880. Burial locations for both are unknown.

Daughter Malinda, when she died in Los Angeles, had her year of birth recorded as 1827, which clashes with earlier records. The census usually had her born about 1833, but in one case specified June 1838. Who knows.

There was a Mary Phelps Churchill (1806-1889) who lived in Imlay, Lapeer County, but she was the wife of Levi’s brother Cyrus. Similarly, there was a Levi William Churchill (1804-1892) born in New York who also moved to Michigan, and who married Sophronia Frisbie. Different guy.

Daniel Pine (181x-184x)

Daniel married New-York-born Charity Sophia Churchill (29 Oct 1815-after 1883) on 5 Jul 1835 at Reg. Baptist Church, Blenheim, Oxford County. John and Levi Churchill witnessed. I used to blame bad transcription for rendering Charity’s name in the marriage record as “Haritas Churchele” until I saw a photocopy of the original, and damn if that ain’t what it says. Daniel and Charity had four children. One died in infancy. The others were:

Levi Churchill Pine (20 Jul 1838-9 May 1911) — m. Emma Jane Howland on 30 Apr 1865

Mary Matilda Pine (29 Jul 1841-31 Aug 1913) — m. John M. Hall in 186x

Malvina Pine (11 Jun 1844-????) — prob. died young

They moved to Dryden Township, Lapeer County, Michigan about 1839. The 1840 census showed them there: Daniel Pine and wife, both in their 20s, with one boy under 5. Daniel apparently died in the mid- to late 1840s. The 1850 census listed Charity (33) with children Levi (11) and Mary M. (8), in Almont Township, Lapeer County, next door to her Vermont-born brothers Levi and Truman and their families. No Malvina? Likely she died young.

Charity married John Munroe (~1807-8 Feb 1883) from Massachusetts in Dryden Township on 15 Oct 1850, although a book on the Churchill clan incorrectly claims it was 14 Oct 1849. Charity’s brother Truman Churchill witnessed the wedding, along with Luna Grey, who I think was the minister’s wife.

The 1860 census showed John and Charity in Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, with Charity’s daughter Mary (18). The 1870, 1875, and 1880 censuses showed John and Charity still there, although John’s year of birth drifted backward while Charity’s moved forward. They never had children. John died in Austin in 1883. Charity was still living at the time, but I can’t track her after that.

Susannah Pine (1819-1873)

Susannah married William Churchill (24 Aug 1812-30 Nov 1859) from Fairfax, Vermont on 24 Aug 1834, his 22nd birthday, at Reg. Baptist Church, Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ontario. After the birth of their first child, the couple moved in 1837 to Imlay City, Lapeer County, Michigan, along with others of their family. They had 13 children:

Walter B. (27 Mar 1837-10 Dec 1897) — m. Maria Jane Best on 8 Aug 1854

John H. (9 Dec 1838-10 Dec 1838)

Anna Permelia (22 Mar 1840-20 Apr 1897) — m. Thomas Ridley on 29 Nov 1860

Albert (3 Oct 1841-186?) — killed in Civil War

William Edward (15 Aug 1843-30 May 1844)

Willis (10 Jul 1845-10 Jul 1845)

Daniel (8 Jun 1846-1928) — m. Clemantha Clark on 29 Sep 1868

Calvin P. (26 Jul 1848-3 Feb 1897) — m. Emily Kilbreath on 28 Mar 1869

Mary Ann M. (29 Dec 1850-23 May 1895) — m. Rev. Newman B. Steele in 1868

William J. (3 May 1853-16 Jul 1936) — m. Harriet L. “Hattie” Fritch on 1 Jan 1878

Emily Eva (24 Aug 1854-16 Dec 1929) — m. George Kinnie on 21 Nov 1872

Charlotte Adell (19 Dec 1856-16 Feb 1891) — m. Frank Ring Sargent on 11 Apr 1877

Newman (5 Jul 1859-7 Oct 1922) — m. Rosella Funk on 25 Jun 1882; m. Lillian M. Harter Rix on 3 May 1914

William died in 1859, and Susannah in 1873. They are buried in Webster Cemetery, Imlay City, Lapeer County, Michigan. Daughter Mary and other relatives are there as well.

Son William’s wife Hattie Fritch was a Clark descendant.

Phebe Ann Pine (1825-1886)

In 1847 in Ontario, Phebe Ann married George Ward (9 Dec 1822-21 Apr 1894) from Maryland, whose parents, William and Henrietta Ann Ward, came from Yorkshire, England. They moved to Michigan about 1856, between the births of Sarah and George Jr. George served in the Union army for one year, from Sep 1864 to Sep 1865. The 1870 census showed the family in Brant Township, Saginaw County, Michigan, where they remained. Known children:

William (22 Nov 1848-5 Nov 1935) — m. Caroline Cordelia “Carrie” Crane on 21 Nov 1872

John (4 Mar 1851-10 Apr 1914) — m. Rebecca Jane “Jennie” Sensabaugh on 7 Dec 1872

Eliza Ann (15 Aug 1853-29 Sep 1926) — m. John A. Thompson in 187x

Sarah Jane (~1856-5 May 1876)

George A., Jr. (12 Jul 1856-21 Jun 1946) — m. Addie L. Smith on 27 Sep 1883; m. Alice A. Webb

Sestdia E. “Seddie” (12 Jan 1868-27 May 1918) — m. Edward L. Hegler on 5 Sep 1894

Phebe died in 1886, and George eight years later. They’re buried at Brant Cemetery, the same place as Phebe’s brother Calvin and his second wife. Most of their children are there too.

Charlotte Pine (1826-????)

Can’t find out much of anything about Charlotte, and I’m not sure she existed.

John Pine, Jr. (1830-1913)

John was living with his father, stepmother, and orphaned nephew Levi in Blenheim Township in the 1851 census. Elizabeth Jane Smith (2 Sep 1834-25 Nov 1899), born in Carleton, New Brunswick, the daughter of Patrick (b. ~1791, England) and Sarah (b. ~1811, Ireland), was also with the family, probably as hired help. The same census also showed her in the household of her parents and siblings in Blenheim. John and Elizabeth married shortly after the census. Their seven children:

Susanna “Lizzena” (16 Apr 1852-15 Sep 1902) — m. Thomas Welsh on 5 Feb 1878

Daniel L. (~1857-1945) — m. Emily Helen Bigley on 22 Jan 1890

George H. (~1860-19 Jan 1876)

Mary A. “Martha” (4 Apr 1863-21 Sep 1924) — m. John Berst on 15 Jan 1889

Charlotte (2 Jun 1866-4 Nov 1947) — m. Charles W. Patten on 16 May 1888

Elizabeth Lee “Lizzie” (13 Jun 1872-21 Jan 1933) — never married

Laura Smith (15 Jun 1875/1876-6 Dec 1918) — m. Richard J. Nicholson on 24 Apr 1901

In the 1861 census, John (31) and Elizabeth (26), with children Susanna (8), Daniel (4), and George (1), were living next door to John, Sr.

The 1871 census listed John Pine (40) of Blenheim as German, and wife Elizabeth (36) as English. It showed children Susanna (19), Daniel (13), George (10), Martha A. (8), and Charlotte (4), all German too. Living with them was Charlotte Pine (62) – the former Charlotte Cooty, John’s widowed stepmother, although her age is a bit off – and Charlotte’s grandson Francis “Frank” Brooksbank (21).

On 22 Jun 1880, Francis Brooksbank married Agnes Ealan/Ellen. They moved to Michigan like everyone else, where they had at least six children.

The 1881 census decided John (51) and the children were French. Elizabeth (47) was still English. Children were Daniel (24), Martha (18), Charlotte (14), Elizabeth (8), and Laura (5). I don’t know where stepmother Charlotte was.

In the 1891 census, John (60) & Elizabeth (56) still had at home daughters Lizzie (19) and Laura (15). Note one online record calls Laura “Lavina”. John said his parents were both from New York, a claim he would later contradict. Also living with the family were John’s eldest daughter Lizzena Pine Welsh (39) and her three children John (12), George (9), and Olive (7); I assume her husband Thomas Welsh had died.

On 25 Nov 1899, Elizabeth died of Bright’s disease. The death notice, from one W.G. Barr of Blenheim Township, gave her residence as Lot 8, Con 8 of Blenheim Township, and her age as 65 years 2 months 23 days (indicating birth date of 2 Sep 1834). It also, mistakenly, listed her as a widow.

The 1901 census listed John (71) still in Blenheim Township as head of house, with daughter “Lizzie” Welsh, 48 (this is actually Lizzena, not Lizzie) and her children George (18) and Olive (17), plus daughter Laura Pine (25). This is the first census to give exact dates of birth. Hmm, where WAS Lizzie? She would have been 27. Maybe on her way to Cleveland, Ohio – her older siblings Daniel and Charlotte were living there already.

John moved to Cleveland probably in 1901 or 1902, maybe right after his youngest, Laura, was married. Daughter Lizzena apparently went with him, as she died there in 1902.

The 1910 census showed John, Jr. living in Cleveland with his unmarried daughter Lizzie and three adult grandchildren. He died in Cleveland in 1913, and is buried with Elizabeth in Wolverton Cemetery. His death record is the only source I’ve seen that names his mother: Anna Biergdorf from Pennsylvania. If true, this is also the only clue I have to when his father’s first wife, Mary Anna Thompson, died.

Grandchildren

This section does not attempt to track all the grandchildren.

Levi Churchill Pine (1838-1911)

Daniel Pine’s son Levi was living with grandpa John Pine Sr. in Ontario in 1851, probably a consequence of his mother re-marrying. I can’t find him in 1860/1861, but he moved back to Lapeer County, where he married Emma Jane Howland (9 Jun 1844-23 Mar 1895) on 30 Apr 1865. Children were:

Daniel (27 Apr 1867-4 Jun 1867)

Lillian M. (22 Mar 1868-19 Mar 1945) — m. Orrin Jay Linendoll

Olive G. (25 May 1870-1944) — m. William H. Wilkinson in 1896

Charles Albert (8 Dec 1875-19xx) — m. Jennie A. Guy on 25 Jul 1901

Hiram (4 Dec 1878-14 Feb 1880)

James Adelbert (24 Mar 1882-????)

Jennie L. (~1885-????)

Emma died in 1895 and is buried in Webster Cemetery, Imlay, Lapeer County with children Daniel and Hiram. In the 1910 census, Levi was living with children James (28) and Jennie (24) in Almont. Levi died the following year, and is buried with Emma and the boys. Their daughter Lillian is buried in the same cemetery, as are Levi’s sister Matilda and their Aunt Susan.

Mary Matilda Pine (1841-1913)

Daniel Pine’s daughter Mary Matilda moved with her mother and stepfather to Minnesota, where the 1860 census showed them. She married John M. Hall (~1837-????) from Vermont in the 1860s. They lived in Minnesota, and had four children:

Cassius P. (~1868-19xx) — m. Mary J. Myers on 24 Apr 1900

Vikond L. (~1870-????)

Emma Gertrude “Gertie” (7 Nov 1872-2 Nov 1936) — m. (or not) George Reynolds; m. Henry Jones on 27 Jan 1926

Katherine Dell “Kittie” (10 Jan 1875-25 Oct 1912)

The 1870 and 1875 censuses showed them in Austin, Mower County, Minnesota, the same county as her mother and stepfather. The 1880 and 1885 censuses showed them in Eidsvold, Lyon County, Minnesota, and also suggested that John died in the early 1880s. I think they moved back to Michigan shortly after that.

In the 1900 census, Mary (59) was living with daughters Gertie (28) and Kittie (25) and two Michigan-born kids named Reynolds – a bit old to be Gertie’s children, but it appears they were – in Kingston, Tuscola County, Michigan. Son Cassius, in that year, was living in Buffalo, New York and getting married in Pennsylvania.

In the 1910 census, Mary (68), widowed, was living in Imlay, Michigan with daughters Gertrude (37) and Kittie (“25”) and two boarders. She died in 1913, the year after Kittie, and is buried in Webster Cemetery, Imlay City, the same place as her brother Levi and their aunt Susan. Her daughters are buried there too. No idea what became of the sons.

Malvina Pine (1844-????)

I haven’t been able to trace Daniel’s daughter Malvina. She likely died young.

George H. Pine (~1860-1876)

John, Jr.’s son George died on 19 ?Jan? 1876 at about age 16. He’s buried in Riverside Baptist Cemetery in Drumbo, Oxford County, Ontario, the same cemetery as his grandfather John Sr.

Susanna “Lizzena” Pine (1852-1902)

John Jr.’s daughter Lizzena (25), who for some reason received the name of her step-aunt Lizena Côté as her nickname, married Thomas Welsh (~1845-188x) of Wolverton, Ontario on 5 Feb 1878. Children included:

John Pine (20 Jan 1879-7 Nov 1951) — m. Jessie G. ??? in 191x

George Thomas or George Pine (8 Jun 1882-25 Jan 1966) — m. Elizabeth Irene Stephen on 31 Aug 1916

Olive Russell (12 Apr 1884-19xx)

The 1881 census listed them in Zorra East Township, Oxford County, ages 34 & 29, with son John (2). I think Thomas Welsh died in the 1880s, since in 1891 Lizzena and her children were living with her parents in Blenheim Township. They were still there in 1901, except for son John, who in 1900 was with Lizzena’s sister Charlotte & family in Cleveland. Lizzena died in 1902, apparently just after moving with her father to Cleveland, and is buried in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.

The 1910 census showed Lizzena’s children John P. (30) and Olive R. (26) sharing a house in Cleveland with their grandfather John Pine Jr., aunt Lizzie Pine, and cousin Muriel Berst. Sometime between 1910 and 1918, John Welsh married someone named Jessie G. born about 1886 in Iowa, since his 1918 draft registration listed her as his wife. The 1920, 1930, and 1940 census for Cleveland showed them, with no children. John was a life insurance salesman. John Welsh died in 1951 and is buried with Jessie (died 1962) in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland.

In 1916, George Welsh married Elizabeth Irene Stephen (30 Aug 1885-Sep 1970). They also seem to have had no children. Unusual pattern for the time. They died in 1966 and 1970 and are also buried in Lake View Cemetery.

To complete the no-children streak, Olive in 1916 was unmarried and living with her equally unmarried aunt Lizzie and a couple of young cousins in Saskatchewan. Can’t track her thereafter.

Daniel L. Pine (~1858-1945)

John Jr.’s son Daniel married Emily Helen Bigley (Apr 1870-????) in Woodstock, Ontario on 22 Jan 1890. Sister Lizzie witnessed this one too. The couple moved to Glenville Township in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where the 1900 census showed them. Children I know of:

Clarence A. (19 Jun 1891-Jan 1965) — m. Gladys A. Young on 25 Jun 1919; divorced 1938; married her again on 21 Dec 1938!

Blanche C. (Nov 1894-????)

In 1910, Daniel and son Clarence were living as boarders with the Sharp family in Cleveland. Emily must have died. What about Blanche?

I can’t find Daniel in 1920, but both he and son Clarence moved to Florida. Widower Daniel L. Pine, born about 1857 in Canada, appears in the 1930 and 1940 census of Dade County, Florida. He died in Hillsborough County, on the other coast of Florida, in 1945. I don’t know where he’s buried.

His son Clarence, mechanic, of 5408 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, married Gladys Young (25) in 1919. In the 1920 census, Clarence and bride were living with her father and stepmother. Clarence apparently followed his father to Florida, because he and Gladys divorced in Hillsborough County, Florida in 1938. And then remarried each other in December 1938. Gladys died in Hillsborough County in 1941. Clarence A. Pine, clerk, born about 1891 in Ohio, appears in the 1945 census of Hillsboro, Hillsborough County, Florida, where his father Daniel Pine died that same year. Clarence died in Tampa, Florida in 1965. I can’t find his grave either.

Don’t know what happened to Blanche. The Blanche Pine of Ohio who married William Smith and had many children was someone else.

Mary A. “Martha” Pine (1863-1924)

John Jr.’s daughter Martha (25) married carriage-maker John Berst (Nov 1857/1858-16 Jul 1940), Ontario-born son of German immigrants, on 15 Jan 1889 in Wolverton, Oxford County, Ontario. Sister Lizzie was a witness. The couple had two children:

Muriel I. (1890-1984)

Hilda G. (Feb 1892-1967)

The 1901 and 1911 census showed the family living in Blenheim Township, although in 1911 Muriel wasn’t there. By 1920, they were all living at 96 Fernhill Street, Buffalo, New York. Martha died there of lung cancer in 1924, and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo.

Martha’s widower husband John was still at that address in Buffalo in 1930 and 1940, and Muriel and Hilda, apparently never married, were with him. John died of complications from a fractured hip in 1940, and is buried with Martha. Muriel and Hilda are buried there too under a shared marker. There are other Bersts in this cemetery.

Charlotte Pine (1866-1947)

John Jr.’s daughter Charlotte married boy-next-door Charles W. Patten (1865-1924) on 16 May 1888 in Wolverton, Oxford County. Sister Martha, aka Mary, was one of the witnesses. They seem to have remained in Oxford County at least through the 1890s. Known children:

Walter L. (1889-1954) — m. Stella I. Hess on 26 Jun 1913

Arthur Dykeman (26 Aug 1890-1956) — m. Mary Della Long on 20 May 1914

John C. (1896-19xx) — m. Mildred A. Slee on 8 Oct 1920

Edith Charlotte (30 Aug 1898-????)

The 1900 census showed them in Cleveland, Ohio with children Walter (11), Arthur (10), John (5), and Charlotte (2), plus Charlotte’s nephew John Welsh (21). There they remained. Charles died in 1924. In 1930, Charlotte was living with her unmarried daughter Edith.

Charlotte Pine Patten, the last of John Pine’s grandchildren, died in 1947. She’s buried with Charles in Highland Park Cemetery, Highland Hills, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Elizabeth Lee “Lizzie” Pine (1872-1933)

John Jr.’s daughter Lizzie apparently never married. After coming to the US as an adult, she lived with her father and other family members in Cleveland, Ohio, where the 1910 census found her.

The 1916 Canada census showed her living in Saskatchewan with her nieces Olive Welsh and Wilfred & Irene Nicholson. She died in Toronto on 21 Jan 1933, and is buried in Wolverton Cemetery with her parents.

Laura Smith Pine (1875-1918)

John Jr.’s daughter Laura married farmer Richard J. Nicholson (~1870-18 Apr 1927) in Wolverton on 24 Apr 1901. They lived in Wingham, Huron County, Ontario, where their first child was born, and then in Sasketchewan, where the others were born. Their children that I know of:

Wilfred Glen (1 Apr 1902-14 Nov 1964) — m. Emma Marie Hallman on 6 Jul 1929

Elizabeth Joy (~1906-????) — m. William Harold Dickinson on 27 Jun 1925

Norma Lee (9 Jan 1910-25 Nov 1935) — m. William Henry Dunne on 25 Apr 1927

Irene (~1913-????)

They moved to Vancouver, British Columbia around 1914. In the 1916 Canada census, Wilfred and Irene were staying with their aunt Lizzie in Saskatchewan, and Laura was nowhere to be found. Laura died of pneumonia in Vancouver in 1918, and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver. Richard died in 1927 and is buried with her.

William J. Churchill (1853-1936)

Susan’s son William married Hattie Fritch (30 Dec 1856-11 Jul 1947), daughter of Harriet E. Clark and grand-daughter of Alexander Clark, Jr., on 1 Jan 1878, a few months before the first of their children was born:

Samuel B. (26 Mar 1878-27 Apr 1968) — m. Hazel Pelton on 22 Jun 1907; m. Rose L. Peterson on 17 Nov 1908

Mae L. (21 Oct 1880-16 Dec 1965) — m. Oscar Alexander Riopelle on 30 Dec 1903

Alpha R. (Jan 1885-1968) — m. Harry O. Pettenger on 7 Jun 1905; m. Paul Winterich on 3 Aug 1908

Orpha B. (12 Jul 1888-21 Mar 1971) — m. Daniel Roderick Macleod on 20 Jul 1915

Bessie M. (8 Dec 1894-Jan 1980) — m. M. Hazen Helmrich on 30 Jun 1920

Shortly after marrying, they moved to Wells, Tuscola County, where the 1880 census found them. By 1900, they were living in the Detroit area, and there they remained. William died in 1936, and Hattie in 1947.
