Henry’s family were German Mennonites from the Alsace-Lorraine region, where the name Crumbach means “crooked creek”. His parents were born around 1760, and his father fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War. Henry had a younger brother, John Thomas Crumback, born about 1785. Henry himself was reportedly born in either Bucks County, Pennsylvania or Buck Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, some 70 miles further north.
There’s little information about Mary’s family beyond their being from eastern Pennsylvania. She might have gone by “Polly”. There’s a story that her father fought in the Revolutionary War, and that her mother, also named Mary, was involved in the action at the Battle of Bunker Hill and had 16 bullet-holes in her clothing but survived. Good story, but unsourced.
Henry and Mary married around 1807. Their sons James Taylor and George T. were born in Wayne County, New York and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania respectively. Daughter Nancy was born in Pennsylvania.
In 1811, the family moved to North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, where they bought farmland near Black Horse Corners. Henry’s brother John Thomas Crumback moved to the same area. They remained there at least until Henry’s death.
The 1851 census of Ontario listed Henry (73) and wife Mary (63), place of birth unreadable, religion Meno (Mennonite), with children Isaac (21) and Fanny (18) still at home.
Henry’s will, dated 1854, claims six sons and five daughters but names only two of them, Isaac and Nancy. The will disinherits Nancy’s (and no one else’s) children if Nancy predeceases him, which is odd for a will made in 1854, since Nancy died no later than 1844. Maybe the will was made earlier, and updated in 1854 without changing the language. In any case, why the diss? Henry didn’t like Calvin?
Henry’s obituary appeared in the 25 Jan 1859 issue of the Berlin Chronicle (the city of Berlin, Ontario, changed its name to Kitchener in 1916): “13 Dec 1858 On Monday, 13th Dec., Henry Crumback, of North Dumfries, near the Black-Horse Inn, aged 79 years. The deceased was born in Pennsylvania, in the year 1780. He had been the Father of a family for 54 years, and resided on the place where he expired for about 40 years. He was the Father of 17 children, 8 sons, 7 daughters, Grandfather to 73 children, Great Grand-father to 12 children, his issue being 100 in all.” There’s not much point now to saying that 8 + 7 does not equal 17, and that other records show “only” 11 children anyway.
In 1861, Mary (73) was living with son Isaac and his family. She died the following year.
Crumback family researchers say that Henry is buried on private property, but his headstone was originally in the cemetery where Mary is buried, near Roseville, Waterloo County, Ontario. Presumably this was Roseville Mennonite Cemetery just west of Roseville next to the Detweiler Meetinghouse, which was built in 1855. Both headstones now reside in a display called Hallman Mennonite Cemetery at 2849 Roseville Road, east of Roseville. Gravestone math indicates birthdates of 27 Jun 1780 for Henry and 8 Feb 1788 for Mary. A Wikitree site claims 1791 as Mary’s year of birth. Documentation, as usual, is lacking.
The inscription on Henry’s stone:
In memory of
Henry CRUMBACK
who died
Dec. 13. 1858
aged
78 y. 5 m. & 16 d.
His spirit is not dead
[Though] below his body lies
But freed from sin and sorrow fled
To dwell beyond the skies
James, born in New York, was a hunter, trapper, and farmer, and also a physician and justice of the peace. He married Catherine Wheeler (16 Dec 1807-10 May 1883), daughter of Gerhard Wieler and Agnes Clasen from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, supposedly in 1828. There are reports of James and Catherine having nine children, but only six appear with them in census records:
Harriet (7 Jun 1827-31 Mar 1908) — m. Robert J. Mann
Gerhard W. (9 Apr 1834-2 Aug 1915) — m. Charlotte Edmansen about 1852
Samuel W. (1836-20 Dec 1881) — m. Clarissa/Clarice B. Strong in 185x; m. Agnes Mohast on 9 Dec 1873
Mary W. “Polly” (17 Mar 1838-26 Apr 1898) — m. James T. Cole about 1856; m. Royal Oak Budlong on 31 Aug 1888
James William (8 Mar 1844-30 Apr 1917) — m. Catherine “Katie” Heinz on 30 Apr 1871
Susanna “Sanna” (1846-1861)
Rachel
George
Henry
The 1851 census showed them in North Dumfries, Waterloo County with children Harriet (21), Gerhard (18), Samuel (16), Polly (13), James (6), and Susanna (5). Religion was recorded as Church of Scotland.
They moved to Gaines Township, Kent County, Michigan in 1854. The 1860 census listed them there as James S. and Catherine “Cumbae”, both 52, from New York and Pennsylvania respectively, with Polly (22), James W. (16), Susan (14), Emma F. (2), and James (2 months). Emma and James, both born in Michigan, were probably grandchildren, but by whom? Son Gerhard and family were next door, and I don’t know whether son Samuel was the single man working for a family in Caledonia Township or the man living way out west in Allegan County with a wife supposedly named Clarence. Probably the latter.
In 1870, James and Catherine were alone, although several of their married children and other relatives were in the area. In 1880 they were living with son James and his family in Gaines. They both died in 1883, and are buried at the Gaines Cemetery along with son James and daughter Susanna.
George’s first wife, whom he married in the early 1830s, was reportedly Hannah Campbell (~1811-~1850). They lived in Blenheim Township, Oxford County. Known children:
James (~1835-????)
Caroline Matilda (1837-186x) — m. Nelson Anderson in 1857
Samuel (1838-????)
Agnes (1840-????)
George Sidney (12 Mar 1843-9 Apr 1911) — m. Eva Rebecca Haddrell on 14 Nov 1869
Louisa (1844-????)
Henry (~1849-????)
The 1851 census showed George (43) as a widower with seven children: James (16), Caroline (14), Samuel (13), Agnes (11), George (9), Louisa (7), and Henry (2). They were living next door to George’s brother or possibly cousin Sam Crumback.
In the 1850s, George remarried to the widow Elizabeth German Grooms (20 Nov 1810-22 Apr 1901), the mother of George W. Clark’s wife Harriet. By the 1861 census, he had died. The household in Blenheim that year listed his widow Elizabeth (50), his sons George (17) and Henry (11), and Elizabeth’s son Neilson Grooms (11).
In the same year, daughter Caroline was living with her husband and first child in Beverly, Wentworth County, Ontario, and son James was nearby living with Caroline’s in-laws. The 23-year-old Samuel J. Crumback living with the Rosenburg family in Caledonia, Michigan in the 1860 census might have been this family’s Samuel. Can’t trace most of the children past that. The Henry Krumback (1850-1901) buried in Grand Rapids was not this family’s Henry.
Nancy has her own entry in the family tree.
Samuel might have been the son of Henry’s brother John Thomas Crumback (1785-1872). He married Maria Simpson (28 Dec 1823-1902) from London or Kent County, England in 1842. They had twelve children:
Hannah (14 Nov 1843-3 May 1875) — m. Edward Bouchiere on 1 Jan 1867
Mary (3 May 1845-7 Apr 1924) — m. Orchan Wait on 29 Jan 1868
Joseph Simpson (19 Jul 1847-23 Jul 1925) — m. Adeline Misener on 26 Oct 1869
Maria Jane (30 Aug 1849-7 Jul 1938) — m. James Henry Harmer on 7 Jul 1869
Sarah (15 Aug 1851-2 Jul 1898) — m. Robert Harmer on 19 Apr 1871
Elizabeth Ann “Lizzie” (1853-4 Apr 1918) — m. Frederick Hansom on 10 Oct 1878
Samuel S. (17 May 1856-11 May 1909) — m. Alice Permelia Beemer on 19 Oct 1882
Martin S. (30 Jul 1857-7 Mar 1927) — m. Elizabeth W. Bruce on 21 Oct 1879
William Isaac (24 Sep 1860-4 Jan 1946) — m. Emerilla Bricker in 1884
George Cicero (1862-19 Jul 1932) — m. Nancy Anne Peterson in 1886
Emiline Samantha “Emlie” (9 Apr 1864-1948) — m. Joseph Beemer on 17 Oct 1883
John Wesley (11 May 1866-1 Nov 1926) — m. Elizabeth Ann Kenyon in 1913
In the 1851 census for Blenheim Township, the children were Hannah, Mary, Joseph, Maria, and Sarah. Samuel’s brother or possibly cousin George Crumback and family were next door, on the previous page of the census.
In 1861 the kids were Hannah, Mary, Joseph, Maria Jr., Sarah, Elizabeth, Samuel Jr., Martin, and William. Maria’s brother Martin Simpson and family were living with them.
In the 1871 census, which got their name as “Crumplock”, Samuel and Maria had the eight younger children still at home. By the 1881 census, which decided the family was French rather than German, they were down to Samuel Jr., William, George, Emily, and John.
Samuel died in Woodstock, Oxford County in 1898, and is buried in Roseville Mennonite Cemetery just east of Roseville. Maria went to live with one of her children in Buffalo, New York, but died in 1902 in Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan.
There’s a claim that Susannah first married a William Rathbun (1802-????) about 1832, and had a son also named William. I have found no evidence for this, and a couple of reasons to doubt it. Susannah definitely did marry Canada-born farmer Samuel B. Furtney (1 Sep 1812-24 Oct 1891). They lived in Wilmot District, Waterloo County, Ontario. Known children:
Calvin (6 Mar 1832-1917) — m. Jane Linton about 1852; m. Esther Jane Hallock Mather on 16 Nov 1896
Henry (1834-23 Nov 1872) — m. Catherine Augusta Waugh about 1859
Jacob (3 Feb 1836-29 Jun 1918) — m. Jane Thompson in 1857
Mary (5 Mar 1839-23 Apr 1896) — m. Christian Shoemaker on 18 Oct 1859
Susannah (~1843-18 Jun 1867) — m. ??? White about 1861; m. Jonathon Ankney on 23 Nov 1865
Frances “Fannie” (9 Aug 1847-13 May 1926) — m. Newton Taylor Moffitt about 1870
Samuel Crumback (4 Jul 1851-10 Jul 1878)
The 1851 census showed them in Waterloo County with children Calvin (17), Jacob (15), Henry (12), Mary (11), Susanne (9), Fanny (4), and Samuel (2). Can’t find them for a while after that.
Sometime before 1880, they moved to Gaines Township, Kent County, Michigan, where the 1880 census showed them with no children still at home. Susannah died in 1885, and is buried in Gaines Cemetery, Cutlerville, Kent County, Michigan. Samuel died in 1891 and is buried with her.
The Susannah Fortney who married William Maxey in 1866 in Illinois was not this family’s daughter.
Mary married Swiss-born Johannes “John” Klopfenstein (24 Oct 1814-26 Dec 1887). Their children:
Mary Ann (1840-1863) — m. David Klingman on 13 Sep 1860
Sarah Ann (9 Jul 1843-18 Aug 1871)
Isaac (1 Apr 1845-????)
Anna (1851-23 Oct 1886) — m. Jacob C. Roth on 11 Sep 1872
John (20 Aug 1854-1872)
Samuel (11 Mar 1857-????)
Freeman Sidney (13 May 1859-10 Sep 1927) — m. Florence Amelia Schooley on 1 Jan 1880
Charles L. (6 Oct 1864-18 Sep 1884)
They settled in Kent County, Michigan before 1860. In the census for 1870, the household included grandson John Klingman (age 8), the late Mary Ann’s son.
John died in 1887, and Mary the following year. They’re buried in Blain Cemetery, Cutlerville, Kent County.
Sally married German-born William Helrigel (15 Feb 1822-21 Nov 1892) on 17 Aug 1842. William was a shoemaker. They had eleven children:
Elizabeth (24 Jan 1847-19 May 1917) — m. Allen Franklin Widrig on 27 Nov 1869
George (22 Feb 1848-21 May 1848)
Henry C. (27 Jan 1849-31 Oct 1920) — m. Harriet Dodge on 1 Jan 1873; m. Elizabeth Heintz on 31 Dec 1885
Barbara (12 Nov 1850-15 Jun 1870) — m. Joseph Aaron Bechtel on 5 Sep 1867
Mary Ann (14 Sep 1854-9 Mar 1936) — m. Henry Leismer on 24 Dec 1871
John C. (29 Jun 1857-9 Apr 1930) — m. Mary Ellen Schwader in 1880
Caroline (6 Sep 1858-1 Jan 1883) — m. Conrad Schmelcher/Smelker in 1879
Sarah Magdeline (17 Feb 1860-8 Jun 1951) — m. Adam Frederick Behler on 24 Mar 1881
William George (9 Jul 1861-16 Sep 1908) — m. Susannah Herber on 2 Nov 1887
Fannie (17 Feb 1863-9 Jun 1866)
Josephine (25 Jul 1866-2 Apr 1867)
They lived at first near Sally’s parents in Black Horse Corners, North Dumfries Township, Waterloo, Ontario. The 1851 census showed Sally and William there with children Elisabeth (5), Henry (3), and Barbra (1). They later lived in Barry County, Michigan.
In 1900, Sally was living with her youngest son, William, in Kent County, Michigan. She died in 1902, and is buried with William in Freeport Cemetery, Freeport, Barry County.
John, named for his uncle, was born in Dumfries Township, Ontario. He married Margaret Rose (12 May 1831-25 Feb 1909) from Ardclach, Nairnshire, Scotland in 1850. They had four children:
Mary (15 Dec ?1851?-25 Apr 1935) — m. Dougald McDougall in 1871
Catherine Calder (2 Jan 1853-4 Sep 1924) — m. Alexander Waybrant on 24 May 1871
John Henry (28 Mar 1856-????) — m. Carrie French Walsh/Welsh on 8 Mar 1876; m. Margaret Walker on 2 Jun 1880
Margaret (1859-1859)
The 1851 census showed the couple in Blenheim, Oxford County as J. C. (26) and Margaret (21) Crumback with baby Mary (supposed age 2). John was a shoemaker, and listed no professed religion. He died in 1859. In 1861, Margaret and the three surviving children were living in North Dumfries Township. In 1871, Margaret still had the two younger children.
In 1883, Margaret married Edward Robinson in Blenheim. She died in 1909, and is buried in Mountview Cemetery, Galt, Waterloo Regional Municipality as Margaret Rose Crumback.
Interesting side-note: John’s grand-daughter Blanche Crumback moved to Buffalo, New York to live with an uncle, and married Alonzo Hinkley, a very, very distant relative of ours. In the 1920 census, her mother, Margaret Walker Crumback, was living with them.
Joseph married Elisabeth Bechtel (1 May 1828-13 Nov 1897) in Ontario in 1849. About 1857, they settled in Thornapple, Barry County, Michigan, where the 1870 census found them. They had two children with them in 1870, neither named Crumback, so I don’t know whether they had children of their own.
In the 1880 census, the boy from 1870 (I think) was still with them, identified as the son of a French immigrant. Elisabeth died in 1897. Among those attending her funeral was a George Crumback from Grand Rapids, age and relationship undetermined.
In 1900, Joseph had a housekeeper from Pennsylvania and her teenage son living with him. He died in 1913, and is buried with Elisabeth in Mount Hope Cemetery, Middleville, Barry County. His tombstone claims year of birth as 1826, but he told the 1900 census he was born in March 1828, so we’re sticking to that. The tombstone also says “Father”, implying that he did have children, although he didn’t mention any to the census.
Isaac married Charity Miranda Watkins (8 Jul 1830-4 Apr 1914). Children:
Chauncey Albert (15 Oct 1859-24 Mar 1938) — m. Lydia Ann Kelley on 15 Oct 1891; m. Lydia A. Taylor on 11 Mar 1909; m. Clotilda Glauz on 3 Aug 1918
Mary Jane (Feb 1860 or 24 Jun 1861-23 Apr 1925) — m. Egbert J. Smith on 27 Oct 1885
Olivia Melissa (Mar 1862-after 1940) — m. Lewis Marvin Banfield on 16 Oct 1881
Walter I. (7 Feb 1864-18 Apr 1943) — m. Emma Dochow on 17 Sep 1891
Elizabeth Ann “Lizzie” (29 Nov 1868-29 Sep 1953) — m. Grant K. Spencer on 14 Aug 1895
George L. (28 Mar 1869-19 Aug 1870)
They lived at first in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County. In 1861, they were sharing the house with Isaac’s mother.
They moved to Michigan in the 1860s, probably after the death of Isaac’s mother in 1862. Isaac died in Gaines, Kent County, Michigan in 1869, and is buried in Gaines Cemetery, Cutlerville. The 1870 census showed Charity (as Miranda Crumback) and the kids in Gaines. Charity died in 1914 and is buried with Isaac.
Fannie in 1852 married George Karcher (14 May 1829-28 Jul 1907), who was from France, although some records said Germany. They had eleven children:
John C. (25 Oct 1853-27 Feb 1941) — m. Annie Mesnard about 1881
William C. (5 Dec 1856-27 Jan 1929) — m. Agnes A. Layle on 12 Aug 1902
George, Jr. (29 Dec 1861-19 Mar 1930) — m. Laura Yerrington in 1883
David C. (1862-21 Sep 1878)
Joseph C. (1865-5 Oct 1878)
Henry C. “Harry” (2 May 1866-23 Feb 1951) — m. Margaret I. “Maggie” Miller on 22 Mar 1893
Hiram (19 Aug 1868-9 Oct 1958) — m. Nellie Bailey on 27 Feb 1898
Ransom C. (7 Aug 1871-9 Sep 1878)
Sarah E. (1 Dec 1873-20 Sep 1878)
Eliza (1875-20 Sep 1878)
Caroline C. (31 Aug 1876-29 Sep 1878
The family settled in Bowne, Kent County, Michigan about 1856. In autumn of 1878, something – almost certainly an outbreak of disease – killed six of the children.
In 1894, they were still in Bowne, with sons William, Hiram, and John, plus John’s wife and children. By 1900, Fannie and George were in Irving Township, Barry County, Michigan, with just son William at home. The census claimed Fannie was the mother of ten (should have been eleven) children, five still living (John, William, George, Henry, and Hiram).
Fannie died in 1909 in Freeport, Barry County, Michigan. She’s buried with George in Freeport Cemetery, Freeport, Barry County, Michigan, the same place as her sister Sarah.
