Moses was born in Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts to Ephraim Smith (1698-????) from Boxford, Essex County and Hannah Rice (1713-1790) from Marlborough.
Lydia was born in Shrewsbury also, the second of a reported 13 children of Zachariah Smith (30 Sep 1716-28 Jan 1793) from Watertown, Essex County and Lydia Hastings (26 Nov 1718-18 Jul 1796) from Waltham, Middlesex County.
Moses and Lydia married on 30 Apr 1760 in Shrewsbury, which is some 20 or 25 miles west of Boston. Note of caution: There was at least one and probably two other roughly contemporary couples named Moses and Lydia Smith who lived in Essex County, Massachusetts, which lies north of Boston.
Moses was a Massachusetts soldier during the Revolutionary War, reaching the rank of lieutenant. He reportedly fought at the Battle of Saratoga.
The 1810 census for Barre listed Moses and Lydia as a couple over age 45, no one living with them. Eber was living nearby, and presumably Seth was too.
Lydia died in 1812 in Barre, Worcester County, Massachusetts. She’s buried in Number 9 Cemetery, Barre. Moses died in 1815, also in Barre. He’s probably buried with Lydia, but there’s no record of it.
Ephraim married Virtue Morton on 7 Nov 1782 in Barre, Massachusetts. Nothing more.
Seth married Mary Whiting (????-1 Jan 1850) and settled in Barre, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Known children:
Jason (9 Aug 1797-15 Aug 1882)
George W. (7 Jan 1806-18 Mar 1844)
Shephard (20 Jan 1809-13 Nov 1863)
Mary died in 1850, and is buried with son George in Number 9 Cemetery, Barre, the same place as Seth’s parents. The 1850 census showed Seth living in some kind of boarding house. Seth died in 1851 and is buried with Mary and George. Their son Shepard is in the same cemetery.
Chloe has her own entry in the family tree.
Eber married Anna Oliver and settled in Barre, Worcester County, Massachusetts. The 1810 census showed him on the same page as his parents, and indicated he had one child, a son. There might have been others, but Eber died in 1822.
Miriam married Dana Newton (1782-1835) on 7 Aug 1802 in Shrewsbury. They lived in Worcester County. Their children:
Harrison (1802-20 Feb 1855) — m. Eliza Howe Dennis on 7 Mar 1829
Courtland (1804-20 Sep 1886) — m. Pamela Brooks Hinds
Lysander (1812-4 May 1864) — m. ???
Miriam N. (19 Mar 1818-23 Apr 1892) — m. George Warren Wilson on 12 Apr 1840
Candace (7 Sep 1821-11 Oct 1905) — m. Needham Howe
Alvira (20 Nov 1823-15 Dec 1899)
Almira (20 Nov 1823-9 Apr 1904)
Dana died in 1835. In 1850, Miriam, widowed, was living in the city of Worcester with her twin daughters Almira and Alvira, who never married. Miriam died in 1856, and is buried with Dana in Worcester Rural Cemetery, Worcester.
Candace married Ebenezer White (9 Jul 1779-31 Oct 1852) on 14 Feb 1802. Following the trail of Candace’s sister Chloe, they moved to the newly created town of Burlington, Vermont, where they were among the early settlers. The obituary for their grandson Henry, who died in 1917, described how they bought a cow on the journey, and how Candace rode on it. Known children:
Horatio N. (23 Oct 1802-4 May 1886) — m. Syrena Adams; m. Susan B. Spaulding on 13 Apr 1880
Eliza (1805-8 Aug 1808)
Adeline E. (1806-31 Oct 1890) — never married
Eliza Ann (~1810-2 Nov 1813)
Hiram S. “Hi” (1816-29 Jun 1893) — m. Cynthia W. Sawyer on 27 Jan 1840; m. Euphemia Armstrong Strong on 29 Feb 1892

Ebenezer ran a grocery store at the corner of Shelburne Street and Cedar Street, now named St. Paul Street and Adams Street. The 1840 census showed his household with 11 members, likely including at least two grown sons and their wives, along with daughter Adeline.
Candace died in Burlington in January 1850, and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Burlington with their daughters. In the census that year, Ebenezer was living with son Hiram and family. He died nearly three years later, and is buried with Candace. Hiram took over running the grocery store. The Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier has documents related to the White family.
There was an Ebenezer White, Jr. who married a Sally Jedkins in 1815, and later married someone named Julia who died in 1843. He lived in Williston just east of Burlington until at least 1843, and reportedly died in Wisconsin in 1871, but he was too old to be the son of this couple.
