Moses SMITH (25 Jan 1738-1 Sep 1815) +
Lydia SMITH (18 Oct 1740-9 Dec 1812)

Ephraim (7 Sep 1762-????) — m. Virtue Morton on 7 Nov 1782

Seth (18 Feb 1767-30 Dec 1851) — m. Mary Whiting

Chloe (8 Aug 1774-5 Apr 1836) — m. Danforth Patterson on 22 Apr or 30 May 1792

Candace (29 Jul 1782-27 Jan 1850) — m. Ebenezer White on 14 Feb 1802

Moses was born in Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts to Ephraim Smith (1698-????) from Boxford, Essex County and Hannah Rice (1713-1790) from Marlborough.

Lydia was born in Shrewsbury also, the second of a reported 13 children of Zachariah Smith (30 Sep 1716-28 Jan 1793) from Watertown, Essex County and Lydia Hastings (26 Nov 1718-18 Jul 1796) from Waltham, Middlesex County.

Moses and Lydia married on 30 Apr 1760 in Shrewsbury, which is some 20 or 25 miles west of Boston. Note of caution: There was at least one and probably two other roughly contemporary couples named Moses and Lydia Smith who lived in Essex County, Massachusetts, which lies north of Boston.

Moses was a Massachusetts soldier during the Revolutionary War, reaching the rank of lieutenant. He reportedly fought at the Battle of Saratoga.

The 1810 census for Barre listed Moses and Lydia as a couple over age 45, no one living with them. Eber was living nearby, and presumably Seth was too.

Lydia died in 1812 in Barre, Worcester County, Massachusetts. She’s buried in Number 9 Cemetery, Barre. Moses died in 1815, also in Barre. He’s probably buried with Lydia, but there’s no record of it.

Ebenezer ran a grocery store at the corner of Shelburne Street and Cedar Street, now named St. Paul Street and Adams Street. The 1840 census showed his household with 11 members, likely including at least two grown sons and their wives, along with daughter Adeline.

Candace died in Burlington in January 1850, and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Burlington with their daughters. In the census that year, Ebenezer was living with son Hiram and family. He died nearly three years later, and is buried with Candace. Hiram took over running the grocery store. The Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier has documents related to the White family.

There was an Ebenezer White, Jr. who married a Sally Jedkins in 1815, and later married someone named Julia who died in 1843. He lived in Williston just east of Burlington until at least 1843, and reportedly died in Wisconsin in 1871, but he was too old to be the son of this couple.
