John PATTERSON, Jr. (25 Apr 1724-????) +
Rebecca ??? (173x-????)

Levi (176x-before 1816) — m. Keziah Horton on 28 Oct 1784

Joseph (1765-????) — m. Mary Billings

Rebecca (1768-????)

Danforth (1770-23 Mar 1832) — m. Chloe Smith on 22 Apr or 30 May 1792

John III (1773-19 May 1848) — m. Sally ??? in 179x; m. Susanna McCracken on 6 Jan 1820

John was born in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. His parents were John Patterson (1691-????) from Ireland, who arrived in Boston with his brother William in 1718, and Mary Albin (1691-25 Nov 1773) from Barre, Worcester County.

Rebecca, reportedly from Scotland, was married to a man named John English before 1754. Her parents are unknown.

John and Rebecca married on 7 Dec 1758 in Barre, Worcester County.

On 3 May 1765, John and Rebecca filed paperwork regarding the estate of Rebecca’s late husband, John English.

On 26 Feb 1778, John and his brother Jacob sold 240 acres of land in Barre to Jonathan Danforth. It was probably around this time that the family moved to Salem, Washington County, New York, which is east of Glens Falls, on the border with Vermont.

Several online sources claim John and/or his father died on 25 Nov 1773, but this comes from a hard-to-read Barre record citing that as the date of death for Mrs. John Patterson, his mother. John’s date of death is unknown, as is Rebecca’s. The 1790 census for Salem, Washington County, New York listed a John Patterson household consisting of two men, one boy under 16, and two females (no age given); there’s a good chance that was him. It also listed a John Pattison household in Hebron, Washington County, probably unrelated.

Children

Levi Patterson (176x-before 1816)

Levi married Keziah Horton on 28 Oct 1784. A mostly tentative list of their children:

Isaac (~1782)

William (~1795)

Henry (1797-28 Dec 1870) — m. Nancy House; m. Emily Heady

Jehiel (1805-14 Jan 1874) — m. Phoebe Anne House

Levi died before 1816, probably in Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont. Keziah survived him.

Joseph Patterson (1765-????)

Joseph married Mary Billings (????-19 Sep 1849) from Montague, Franklin County, Massachusetts. I think they settled in Argyle, Washington County, New York, where the 1790 census showed what I believe was them with three children. I know of or suspect three children:

Joseph, Jr. (1784-22 May 1870) — m. Jane ??? -- UNSURE OF PARENTAGE

Sophia (~1796-23 Aug 1822)

Tirzah (~1799-30 Apr 1879) — m. Hiram Horton in Nov 1821

The 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses showed a Joseph Patterson in Argyle, but he was born in the 1780s – probably Joseph, Jr., although there’s no proof of that.

Rebecca Patterson (1768-????)

No information.

Danforth Patterson (1770-1832)

Danforth has his own entry in the family tree.

John Patterson III (1773-1848)

John III married someone named Sally, details lacking. They lived at first in Salem, Washington County, New York, but moved to Georgia Township, Franklin County in northern Vermont in 1797 or 1798. Their children:

Danforth (12 Sep 1796-3 Jul 1867) — m. Hannah Aldridge on 21 May 1820

John IV (~1797-4 Aug 1870) — m. Mary “Polly” Potter on 29 Oct 1822

Abner C. (21 Oct 1798-????) — m. ?Leafy? Russel on 25 Nov 1817

Lovina Bull (~1809-11 Apr 1875) — m. Lydia Jane House; m. Sarah Ann “Sally” House

Artimus (~1810-????) — m. Elizabeth “Betsey” Merritt on 22 Feb 1836

The 1810 and 1820 censuses for Georgia Township, Franklin County, Vermont showed a John Patterson household. The 1830 and 1840 censuses showed two such households, clearly John III and son John IV. Sally must have died between 1810 and 1819, since John married Susanna McCracken (1774-1 Dec 1858), daughter of Col. Joseph McCracken and Sarah Turner, on 6 Jan 1820. They reportedly had no children, although the 1830 census showed John III’s household with two boys under 10.

John died in 1848 in Bangor, Franklin County, New York, and is buried with Susannah in Bangor Cemetery. Unclear why they moved west to upstate New York so late in life, although John’s son Lovina moved there also.
