Sarah (15 Feb 1743-15 Mar 1822) — m. Jonathan Brown about 1769

Elizabeth “Betty” (3 Jun 1769-????)

Moulton was a common name in colonial New England. It seems most likely that this Jonathan Moulton was the child born in 1717 to John Moulton (30 Mar 1669-1 Apr 1740) and Rebecca Smith (25 Jun 1687-25 Feb 1741) of Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, although there are records for the same child being born on the same date in 1718 and again in 1719, which is an impressive feat for one so young.

Although an ancestry.com page claims Sarah’s maiden name was Basford, other sources claim her parents were Ebenezer Burbank (28 Jun 1687-30 Nov 1760) and Sarah Hardy (9 Jun 1689-25 Jan 1754), who married on 19 Apr 1711 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Jonathan Moulton married Sarah Burbank on 21 May 1741 in Bradford.

Jonathan and Sarah Moulton lived in Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, about 10 miles east of the modern city of Manchester. Birth records show their daughters Nanne, Sarah, and Betty born there. I have no conclusive proof that this was the same Jonathan and Sarah who married in Bradford in 1841, but I’m going with it for now.

Jonathan reportedly died in 1771 in Chester. Sarah subsequently married a Chester Moulton (1717-????). Sarah died in Chester in 1807 – at least, someone with her name did. No burial details.

Children

Nanne Moulton (1741-????)

Nanne married Josiah Bradley, Sr. (20 Sep 1745-2 May 1778) on 11 Nov 1767 in Kensington, Rockingham County. Known children, born in Chester:

Josiah, Jr. (17 May 1770-25 Oct 1812) — m. Phebe Webster on 18 Oct 1792

Jonathan (20 Feb 1776-21 Oct 1864) — m. Lucretia Gove Barnard on 22 Mar 1796

Josiah Sr. died in 1778. In 1779 Nanne married widower Jethro Colby (8 May 1733-4 Apr 1803) in Chester. Can’t find her after that.

Son Josiah Jr. died in Vienna, Kennebec County, Maine. Jonathan died in Nelson, Madison County, New York.

Sarah Moulton (1743-1822)

Sarah has her own entry in the family tree.

Abigail Moulton (17xx-18xx)

Abigail married Jacob Basford (22 Apr 1750-1813), son of Jacob Basford, Sr. and Abigail Silver, on 31 Oct 1771 in Kensington. Census records show that they remained in Chester and had children, but details are lacking. Jacob died in 1813. After the death of Abigail’s sister Sarah, she married Sarah’s widower husband Jonathan Brown (15 Sep 1747-2 Nov 1828). Abigail died in 1836 or 1841.

Elizabeth “Betty” Moulton (1769-????)

I am not certain Betty was of this family, but she was born in Chester to a Jonathan and Sarah Moulton, so she’s included.
