Jonathan BROWN (15 Sep 1747-2 Nov 1828) +
Sarah MOULTON (15 Feb 1743-15 Mar 1822)

Jonathan, Jr. (21 Aug 1768-????) -- UNSURE OF PARENTAGE

Ebenezer (17 Jan 1770-23 Feb 1852) — m. Mary Whittier on 19 Feb 1795

Eliphalet (30 Apr 1776-9 or 10 Jun 1851) — m. Abigail Smith on 28 Oct 1800

Josiah (17xx-????)

Sarah “Sally” (11 Jun 1781-1 Mar 1836) — m. Peter Morse on 26 Sep 1799

Abigail () — m. ??? Basford -- UNSURE OF PARENTAGE

Susanna (10 Feb 1785-15 May 1850) — m. Moses Hoyt Sanborn on 20 Sep 1801

Jonathan was born in Rye Township, Rockingham County, New Hampshire to Dr. Samuel Brown and Susannah Knowles, and baptized five days after his birth.

[Caveat: There were multiple Jonathan Browns in mid- to late 18th century Rockingham County. To further confuse matters, there was a different Samuel Brown of Rockingham County who had two sons named Jonathan – the first in 1748, and the second in 1750 after the death of the first. There was even another couple named Jonathan and Sarah Brown living in Poplin, now the township of Fremont, where our Jonathan lived. Some of the information about that other Jonathan is appended at the bottom of this page. The point is, untangling the dates and names for all these contemporary Jonathan Browns is tricky. Many online sources have not done a good job of it, and I am not certain I have either.]

Sarah was reportedly the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Moulton of Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The Moultons came from Newbury, Massachusetts. However, documentation is lacking. Just as 18th century Rockingham County was over-supplied with Jonathan Browns, it had a surfeit of Jonathan Moultons, several with wives named Sarah. There are records of five other Sarah Moultons born in Rockingham County between 1747 and 1753.

I don’t know when Jonathan and Sarah married. They lived in Poplin (now Fremont Township). There’s a book called History of old Chester [N.H.] from 1719 to 1869, by Benjamin Chase, that mentions them – see pages 476-477 – and also mentions the older man with the same name. Be warned, though, the book contains mistakes, such as claiming our Jonathan was born in 1760. It says Jonathan and Sarah lived “about a mile south of the Rocke bridge”, that Jonathan’s parents Samuel and Susannah died in May 1794 and May 1789 respectively, and that Jonathan’s son Ebenezer married “Mary Whitcher” of Brentwood and moved to Vermont.

Jonathan and the other Jonathan Brown are on the same census page in 1790. Sadly, the census named only the head of household, and used very broad age ranges for males and no age for females.

After Sarah’s death in 1822, Jonathan married her sister Abigail Moulton Basford, widow of Jacob Basford (22 Apr 1750-1813). Abigail outlasted Jonathan too, living until 1836 or 1841.

Jonathan and Sarah are buried in the Hoyt-Currier Cemetery, Fremont. The inscription names Jonathan as “Jonathan Brown, Jr.”, but bear in mind that, before the 20th century, “Senior” and “Junior” were used to distinguish older from younger relatives of the same name regardless of whether they were father and son.

Children

Jonathan Brown, Jr. (1768-????)

Jonathan, Jr. was born in Poplin/Fremont, and remained there. That book claims his parents were Jonathan Brown and Sarah Moulton, but I suspect they were the other, older Jonathan Brown and one of his wives.

Ebenezer Brown (1770-1852)

Ebenezer has his own entry in the family tree.

Eliphalet Brown (1776-1851)

Eliphalet married Abigail Smith (1775-26 Jan 1851) from New Hampshire on 28 Oct 1800. They settled in Vienna, Kennebec County, Maine. Known children:

Sarah “Sally” (10 Jun 1801-11 Nov 1864) — m. Stephen Gilman about 1825

Daniel (24 Apr 1803-22 Jul 1884) — m. Harriet Eastman Cass on 30 Dec 1824

Jonathan (6 Feb 1813-????)

John (12 Jan 1819-27 Aug 1902) — m. Sophia W. Neal on 7 Jul 1850

In 1850, Eliphalet and Abigail were living with son John and his wife Sophia in Vienna. Abigail died in January 1851, and Eliphalet a few months after. They’re buried together in Vienna Village Cemetery.

Josiah Brown (17xx-????)

Josiah went to sea and never returned, according to History of old Chester [N.H.] from 1719 to 1869.

Sarah “Sally” Brown (1781-1836)

Sally in 1799 married Peter Morse, Sr. (1774-1863), youngest child of Stephen Morse (16 Feb 1723-6 Mar 1807) and Abigail Ingalls (1725-18 May 1806), longtime residents of Chester, New Hampshire. Known or suspected children:

Jonathan B. (15 Jan 1800-10 Apr 1872) — m. Betsey Gilmore Clyde on 5 Dec 1850

Peter, Jr. (Jun 1801-28 Mar 1879) — m. Mary Elvira Randall in 1837

Abigail Ingalls (26 Jan 1805-21 Feb 1866) — m. Amasa Potter on 25 Dec 1825; m. Alfred Carpenter in 1832

Sarah N. (27 Jan 1813-6 Nov 1890) — m. Joseph Abbott in Nov 1836

Stephen (5 Nov 1814-????)

Fannie Brown (22 Sep 1818-6 Aug 1902) — m. George Purington on 14 Jun 1836

Sally died in 1836, and is buried in Hoyt-Currier Cemetery, Fremont, the same place as her parents. Peter lived until 1863, and is buried with Sally.

Abigail Brown ()

Beyond that she married someone with the surname Basford, I have nothing about Abigail. It’s possible she’s just a confused reference to Sarah Moulton’s sister Abigail.

Susanna Brown (1785-1850)

Susanna married Moses Hoyt Sanborn (22 Sep 1783-27 Apr 1864) on 20 Sep 1801. They lived in Poplin/Fremont. (Caution: There were other Moses Sanborns in the area.) Children:

Sarah “Sally” (14 Oct 1801-????) — m. Arial Sanborn in 1826

Asa (30 Jan 1803-16 Aug 1878) — m. Fareny Gilman on 31 Dec 1825; m. Abigail Sanborn on 26 Oct 1841

Fairseen (14 Jul 1804-????) — m. James Sawyer in 1824

Moses Nelson (9 Jan 1806-4 Jun 1873) — m. Syrena F. Tucker on 13 Dec 1827

True Glidden (8 Jan 1808-????) — m. Rachel Sleeper on 25 Nov 1830

John L. (8 Mar 1810-8 Mar 1845) — m. Hannah Foote Sanborn on 12 Jun 1828

Jonathan Brown (12 Oct 1811-30 Aug 1884) — m. Rachel Sleeper Sanborn Tilton on 17 Sep 1837

Sherburne (18 Dec 1814-27 Apr 1889) — m. Elizabeth Tilton on 12 Dec 1839; m. Belle A. Jewett on 30 May 1882

Nancy (2 May 1816-1824)

Lewis (18 Jul 1819-26 Apr 1891) — m. Abigail F. York on 18 Oct 1842; Laura P. Hutchens on 4 Apr 1881

Alvah (6 Mar 1822-1823)

Alvah (31 Dec 1823-11 Feb 1905) — m. Nancy Page on 26 Sep 1843

Nancy (14 Sep 1825-1841)

Susanna died in 1850, and is buried in Sanborn Cemetery, Chester. Moses lived with son Alvah and family until his death in 1864. He’s buried with Susanna.

The Other Jonathan Brown

Jonathan Brown, Jr. (20 Jan 1737-13 Aug 1830) was born in Kensington, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, the fifth of eleven children of Jonathan Brown, Sr. (24 Feb 1700-10 Jul 1766) and Joanna Abba (15 Nov 1706-1766). He married Sarah ??? of Salisbury, Massachusetts on 18 Feb 1762. Their children were Mary, Catherine, and John (m. Susan Leavitt), and probably Joanna (9 Mar 1766-????). On 6 Jun 1769, he married Anna Sanborn. They lived in Poplin (now Fremont), and their children include Jonathan III (born ~1770 or maybe 1768, married Anna Jewell (b. 29 Jun 1771)), Sarah, and Elizabeth. Some accounts say son John was born in the 1770s, making him a son of Anna rather than of Sarah. Others say Jonathan III was dates 21 Jan 1768-5 Feb 1854, taking the birth date of what I thought was Samuel’s and Sarah’s son (and Ebenezer’s older brother) Jonathan.
