Moses WISMER, Sr. (27 Feb 1794-185x) +
Eunice Ann NOBLE (30 Apr 1801-187x)

David Noble (19 Oct 1818-11 May 1901) — m. Margaret Quantz on 6 Mar 1849

Ambrose (12 Jul 1821-23 Sep 1846) — m. Ann Watson on 1 Feb 1846

John (Aug 1823-23 Jan 1845) — m. Delilah Earhart

Delilah (Oct 1824-31 May 1912) — m. Joseph Earhart in 184x

Zachariah (1827-10 Sep 1900) — m. Catherine Ann Pipher on 30 Aug 1852

Hannah Sheridan (27 Jul 1832-10 Nov 1912) — m. Christian Earhart in 184x; m. John W. Ruttan on 23 Jan 1903

Solomon (?11 Sep 1834-23 Feb 1851?) — PROB. SAME AS MOSES JR.

Moses, Jr. (?11 Sep 1836-23 Feb 1851?)

Aaron (25 Nov/4 Dec 1838-16 Feb 1928) — m. Bathsheba Perrin on 26 Feb 1861; divorced

Henry (22 Dec 1840-9 Jan 1900) — m. Sina E. Williams in 1865

Austin Noble (~1843-22 Mar 1917) — m. Sarah Dommer on 15 Feb 1871; m. Emily Earhart on 16 Jun 1881

Moses was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, eldest child of David Wismer and Lydia Everett. One of his sons later claimed Moses was born in Indiana, which is highly unlikely. The family moved west to settle in Markham Township, York County, Ontario about 1806, where they purchased a 500-acre tract of land.

Eunice was born in Herkimer, New York, although her children also variously claimed Massachusetts or Canada. Her parents were Stephen Noble and Esther Smith from Hampden County, Massachusetts. The family moved from Herkimer to Markham Township, York County, Ontario in 1810.

Moses and Eunice married in 1817 in Markham Township, where they remained.

The 1851 census listed them: Moses (59) and Eunice (50) Wismer, with children Delila Earhart (27), Zachariah (24), Moses (15), Aaron (12), and Austin (8), plus Delilah’s two children David (4) and Liman (1), and a Samuel Earhart (56) who was probably Delilah’s father-in-law. The eldest, David, had married and had his own family living nearby, and Hannah was right next door. There were other Wismer and Noble families in Markham.

Moses probably died in the 1850s. One source says May 1853. The 1861 census for Mariposa, Victoria County, Ontario showed US-born Eunice (60) in a household headed by Canada-born son Aaron (22). Also present were Delila (37), James (18), and David (12), all listed with the last name Wismer. David was Delilah’s son David Earhart. It’s unclear who “James” was, but most likely he was Austin, who would have been about 18 and who was otherwise not listed.

Eunice was reportedly still living in Ontario in 1871, but doesn’t show up in the census as either “Wismer” or “Wisner”. On 27 Jun 1875, Eunice married Scottish immigrant William J. Wilson (~1804-1889) in Delaware, Sanilac County, Michigan, where she resided. The wedding was witnessed by David Wismer and Samuel Umphrey, her eldest son and grandson-in-law respectively. Eunice claimed at the time to be just 60, but it wasn’t just her – William was also claiming to be 60. By the 1880 census, William was widowed once again, so Eunice died in the late 1870s.

Children

David Noble Wismer (1818-1901)

David married Margaret Quantz (1825-1899) in 1849 in Markham, Ontario. In the 1851 census they were living near his parents. Children I know of:

Philip (~1851-27 May 1880) — m. Mary Umphrey

William (13 Nov 1853-22 Nov 1933) — m. Phoebe A. Morin on 22 Jan 1882

Mary Ann (6 Mar 1857-13 May 1921) — m. Jacob Luke Stoutenburg in 187x

Josephine (~1859-8 Mar 1920) — m. Jonas Earhart (cousin) on 14 Sep 1874

Ambrose B. (4 Oct 1864-15 Nov 1924) — m. Margaret E. Chappelle on 20 Oct 1885; married her again on 29 Dec 1903

Mary Elizabeth “Elizabeth” (31 Aug 1867-20 Aug 1943) — m. Charles L. Hawks on 9 Oct 1886

Matilda (~1870-????) — prob. died young

They moved to Michigan in the mid-1850s, after William’s birth. The 1860 census showed them in Forester, Sanilac County, Michigan with the first four children. They returned to Canada in time for Ambrose to be born there; the 1871 census listed them with all seven children in North Gwillimbury, York County, Ontario. The 1880 census showed them in Delaware Township, Sanilac County with William, Ambrose, and Elizabeth.

The 1894 Michigan state census listed David and Martha (sic) Wismer in Burleigh Township, Iosco County. Margaret died in 1899. The 1900 census showed David living with son Ambrose and family, surname rendered as “Wisener”, in Burleigh Township. He died of heart failure in May of the following year, and is buried in Burleigh Cemetery, Whittemore, Iosco County. His burial record claimed his father’s name was David also.

Ambrose Wismer (1821-1846)

Ambrose died less than a year after marrying Ann Watson in 1846. I don’t know whether they had a child.

John Wismer (1823-1845)

John died in 1845 at just 21. Like Ambrose, he had recently married, to Delilah Earhart. As with Ambrose, I don’t know whether there was a child.

Delilah Wismer (1824-1912)

Delilah married Joseph Earhart, who apparently didn’t last long, because in the 1851 census she and her two children were living with her parents. Those children:

David (1848-5 Aug 1917) — m. Elizabeth Stonehouse on 13 Sep 1877

Lyman (~1850-????) — prob. died young

She was still with her mother in 1861, along with David, but no sign of Lyman. Michigan census records from 1880 through 1910 showed her living with brother Aaron in Burleigh Township, Iosco County. The William Earhart (31) with them in 1880 was apparently their sister Hannah’s son. Delilah died on 31 May 1912 and is buried in Burleigh Township Cemetery, Whittemore Township, Iosco County, the same place as brother David.

Zachariah Wismer (1827-1900)

Zachariah has his own entry in the family tree.

Hannah Sheridan Wismer (1832-1912)

Hannah married Christian Earhart (19 Feb 1822-7 Dec 1899) about 1848. The 1851 census showed them next door to Hannah’s parents, with Hannah claiming to be 22. Known children:

William F. (~1847-after 1880)

Jonas (22 Nov 1849-19 Jul 1910) — m. Josephine Wismer (cousin) on 14 Sep 1874

Sylvanus (25 Jan 1853-14 Nov 1921) — m. Amanda Hudson on 24 Aug 1874

Susan (13 Feb 1855-7 Nov 1934) — m. William Pearce on 25 Dec 1877

Emma/Emily (19 Oct 1860-26 Aug 1947) — m. Austin Noble Wismer (uncle!) on 16 Jun 1881

Eunice Blanche (4 Feb 1862-17 Sep 1918) — m. Benjamin Woodward on 1 Dec 1885

Moses (3 Feb 1864-14 Jul 1948) — m. Florence Ada McClellan on 2 Mar 1898; m. Mary M. Basiger Barron on 31 Jul 1920

The 1871 census listed the family in Mariposa, Kawartha Lakes, Ontario with all seven children. Christian died in 1899. In 1903, Hannah married John Wesley Ruttan (20 Mar 1830-2 Jun 1908). She died in Ontario in 1912. I don’t know where she’s buried.

Solomon Wismer (?1834-1851?)

Solomon supposedly died in 1851, at age 16. I’ve seen no evidence that he existed. Probably just a confusion with Moses Jr.

Moses Wismer, Jr. (~1836-?1851?)

Moses appeared in the 1851 census, age 15, but nothing thereafter. Online accounts have him dying the same day as his supposed brother Solomon, but those accounts also give him the same birthday as but two years later than Solomon. I suspect they were the same person.

Aaron Wismer (1838-1928)

Aaron married Bathsheba Perrin (Apr 1844-21 Apr 1912), daughter of John and Mary Perrin, on 26 Feb 1861 in Victoria County, Ontario. They had two children:

William Ambrose (12 Sep 1860-24 Feb 1953) — m. Emma Lillian Walker on 31 Jan 1889

John (1868-????)

They moved to Michigan just in time for the 1870 census, which listed their children as Ambrose (6 – this was William) and John (2). They apparently separated in the 1870s, and Aaron’s kids went with their mother, wherever she was. Bathsheba married someone named O’Neil, and then married one Judge Sweet in 1902.

The 1880 census showed Aaron with sister Delila (transcribed as “Sylia”) Earhart (54) and their nephew William Earhart (31) in Burleigh Township, Iosco County. In 1894, 1900, and 1910, Aaron and Delila were still sharing the place in Burleigh. They claimed their mother was born in Canada. Delilah died in 1912. In 1920, Aaron was staying with a young man named Roy Hyke in Clinton County. He died in Iosco County in 1928, and is buried in Burleigh Cemetery, Whittemore, Iosco County, the same place as siblings David and Delilah.

Henry Wismer (1840-1900)

Henry married Sina E. Williams (31 Dec 1844-27 Jun 1925) about 1865. They had six children:

Isabella (1865-1964) — m. Amasa King Willis on 13 Jan 1914

Julia Clarissa (13 Sep 1867-13 Jan 1923) — m. Harry C. Frink in 1886

Mary Jane (8 Dec 1869-16 Jul 1928) — m. John Van Sickle on 18 Nov 1888

Belle (~1874-????) — prob. died young

Martha (27 Mar 1875-after 1930) — m. Reginald H. Harrison on 10 Feb 1891

Arthur (30 Sep 1882-9 Dec 1959) — m. Iva Mae Burgess on 9 Jun 1912

The family were reportedly in New York when Isabella was born, and in Ontario for Julia’s birth, and then settled in Delaware Township, Sanilac County, Michigan where the others were born. The 1880 census showed them there with the four surviving girls. Henry died in 1900 and is buried in Wheatland Cemetery, Wheatland Township, Sanilac County. Sina married John Morgan Fair (1846-1932) in 1906. She died in 1925, and is buried with Henry.

Daughter Isabella’s gravestone says she was born in 1863. I suspect she exaggerated her age a bit in later years in an attempt to reach the century mark, not considering how this might reflect on her parents.

Austin Noble Wismer (~1843-1917)

Austin married Sarah Dommer (~1847-~1881) from Ireland, daughter of John and Margaret Dommer, on 15 Feb 1871 in Barrie, Simcoe, Ontario. (Her surname might have been Domar or even Donner.) They had five children:

John (~1872-????)

Minnie (21 Mar 1873-20 Jun 1953) — m. Thomas Thatcher Grimmett

Harriet Florence (20 Feb 1876-13 Apr 1918) — m. Walter George Bestwick

Lily May (1 May 1878-????)

Sarah Edith (5 Sep 1879-8 Apr 1907) — m. Herbert Stillman Crothers

The 1881 census showed them in Eldon, Victoria North, Ontario with all five children. Sarah must have died shortly after, because Austin married Emma/Emily Earhart (19 Oct 1860-26 Aug 1947), his niece, daughter of his sister Hannah, on 16 Jun 1881 in Sutton, York, Ontario. They had two children:

Arthur Earle (14 Jan 1882-1963) — m. Margaret A. Ogg

Leslie Austin (16 Dec 1883-19xx) — m. Mabel ??? in 19xx

The 1891 census showed them in Qu’Appelle, Assiniboia East, Northwest Territories with all seven kids. The 1916 census showed Emily Wismer (57) with son Arthur (34) at 2009 Rose Street, 27 Regina, Saskatchewan; married son Leslie was living in the same area. The census said Emily was a widow, which conflicts with the report of Austin dying in 1917. Austin is buried in Fraser Cemetery, New Westminster, Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia. Emily/Emma reportedly died in 1947, but I don’t know where.
