Austin Smith NOBLE (8 Nov 1792-2 Oct 1872) +
Mary LIGHTLY (~1794-1838)

Katherine (~1820-????)

John Truman, Sr. (~1825-23 Nov 1853) — m. Lucinda Umphrey on 26 Nov 1844

Mary (1828-28 Dec 1866) — m. Matthew Umphrey in Oct 1845

Almira Agnes (13 Jun 1830-14 Dec 1912) — m. Philip McLaughlin in 185x

Huldah (20 Aug 1834-3 Dec 1896) — m. John DeLong on 16 May 1848

Austin was born probably in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts to Stephen Noble and Esther Smith. Some sources say he was born in Newfane, Windham County, Vermont and give a 1793 date. I’ve seen no evidence either way, but his tombstone claims 1792. In the late 1700s the family moved to Warren, Herkimer County, New York. In 1810, they moved to Markham Township, York County, Ontario.

Mary’s father was reported to be Philip Lightly (~1770-????). Her birthplace is unknown.

An 1878 book called History and Genealogy of the Family of Thomas Noble, of Westfield, Massachusetts by Lucius M. Boltwood contains details about the Nobles.

Austin and Mary married in Markham Township, York County, Ontario about 1814. They settled in Markham Township. Mary died there in 1838.

I can find nothing about Austin between then and 1872. The 68-year-old A. Noble from Hampden County, Massachusetts who appeared in the 1860 census for Damascus Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania was apparently one Alva Noble. The 67-year-old Dr. A. E. Noble from New York who in the same year was living in Port Huron, Michigan was likewise not our man. In 1872, Austin emerged from hiding, died, and was buried in Barryville Cemetery, Nashville, Barry County, Michigan.

Austin’s younger brother Ambrose definitely did live in Markham until his own death in 1889.

John Truman Noble, Sr. (~1825-1853)

Truman married Lucinda Umphrey (~1822-?23 Nov 1853?) from Brock Township, Ontario on 26 Nov 1844 in Brock Township. Lucinda was probably a daughter of Hinkley ancestors Samuel John Umphrey and Lucinda Woolery – the name, location, approximate age, and family connection all fit – but there’s almost no information about her, and the date given for her death is the same as that of her husband, which is of course possible but raises questions. Children:

Mary (~1849)

Margaret (~1851)

Levi Wellington (~1852-????) — m. Margaret M. “Maggie” Cudney on 31 Oct 1883

John Truman, Jr. (Jul 1854-?30 Jul 1922?) — m. Celestia Irene “Letta” Preston on 5 May 1877; m. Mary Barker Earns on 10 Apr 1919

Truman reportedly died in 1853 in Mariposa Township, Kawartha Lakes Division, Victoria County, Ontario, but I’ve found no documentation for him after the 1844 wedding. Lucinda reportedly died on the same date as Truman Sr., but son Truman Jr. claimed to have been born the following year, so that’s two reasons for skepticism.

In 1870, Truman, Jr. was working for his uncle (by marriage, and probably by blood also) Matthew Umphrey in Sanilac County, Michigan. He married in 1877 and settled in Sanilac County, where he died in the 1920s. Levi showed up in 1880 working as a drover for the Sawyer family in Sanilac County, married there in 1883, and later lived in Alpena County, although I can’t trace him after the births of his children. The Levi Noble who married Laura Goddard and died in 1938 in Isabella County, Michigan was someone else. The daughters are more elusive.

Mary Noble (1828-1866)

Mary has her own entry in the family tree.

Almira Noble (1830-1912)

Almira, age 22, was living in Markham Township, York County with a 74-year-old woman from Pennsylvania in the 1851 census. She married Philip McLaughlin (~1832-1881), who was reportedly from Ireland. Known children:

John A. (1855-after 1900)

Truman W. (1857-????)

Mary E. (6 Jul 1860-18 Jun 1895) — m. Henry DeGeer on 22 Oct 1878

Almira Catherine Jane (~1862-????) — m. William Henry McGann on 6 Apr 1878

Hannah (1864-????)

Holliday (1866-????)

The 1861 census for Mariposa, Victoria, Ontario listed Philip McLachlan (30), laborer, and wife Elmira (31) with children John A. (6), Truman W. (4), and Mary E. (2). The 1871 census for Aurora, York County, Ontario listed Philip (39) and Elmira (41) with children John (16), Truman (14), Mary (12), Catharine (9), Hannah (7), and Holliday (5). Can’t trace most of them after that, possibly due to variant spellings of the family name. Philip reportedly died in 1881, but there’s no source record for that.

Almira spent the last decade of her life in an old folks’ home in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, dying there on 14 Dec 1912. The death record said she was born in Newmarket, which is just north of Aurora.

Huldah Noble (1834-1896)

Huldah married John DeLong (22 Aug 1822-25 Jul 1904) on 16 May 1848 in Mariposa, Victoria County, Ontario. They moved to Michigan after the birth of their second child. Children:

Mary Ann (11 Jan 1851-21 Jan 1934) — m. George P. Turner

Tryphena (12 Jan 1853-4 Feb 1925) — never married

Austin R. (5 Jan 1855-13 Aug 1937) — m. Julia Elizabeth “Libbie” Clark on 23 Dec 1883

Almira (6 Jan 1857-23 Aug 1859)

Permilia (25 Dec 1858-19 Oct 1940) — m. William Hamilton Flury on 24 Dec 1885

Dianthia (~1861-22 Dec 1886) — m. William C. Harris on 12 Oct 1886

Emmeretta “Emma” (31 Mar 1864-10 Feb 1940) — m. Frank Wright in 1883

Martha (Oct 1866-after 1920) — m. Henry J. Dellar on 7 Nov 1888

Charles Martin (6 Dec 1868-19xx)

Clarissa “Clara” (9 Jul 1871-20 Mar 1937) — m. Harry Allen Durkee on 4 Dec 1894

Lydia (4 Feb 1874-15 Feb 1874)

The 1870 census for Castleton, Barry County, Michigan listed John (47) and Huldah (35) with children Mary (19), Tryphena (17), Austin (15), Pernelia (11), Dianthia (9), Emaretta (6), Martha (3), and Martin (1), plus Mary Ann’s future husband George Turner (23). The 1880 census, which incorrectly claimed Huldah’s parents were from England, showed the family in the same place with children Austin (25), Emma (27 – wrong!), Tryphena (16 – wrong!), Martha (14), Charles (11), and Clara (7). Looks like the census man mixed up Tryphena and Emma.

Huldah died in 1896, and is buried in Barryville Cemetery, Barry County, the same place as her father. John died in 1904 and is buried with her.

The 1900 census found son Charles Martin DeLong working as a miner in Alaska, but there was no trace of him thereafter.
