Moses HODSDON III (7 Apr 1766-2 Nov 1845) +
Mercy YOUNG (19 Dec 1768-7 May 1852)

Oliver (3 Jan 1790-27 Jan 1858) — m. Abigail Cole Knight

Ebenezer (18 Feb 1792-13 May 1838) — m. Ruth Goodwin Blake on 13 Aug 1812

Mercy (4 Oct 1795-13 May 1831) — m. John Bovee Dods on 6 Aug 1820

Moses IV (11 Apr 1799-16 Mar 1865) — m. Jerusha Young

Ira (13 Sep 1802-13 Oct 1802)

Frederick Augustus (15 Nov 1804-19 Aug 1868) — m. Martha A. Mason

Moses was born in Berwick, York County, Maine, the eldest child of Moses Hodsdon II and Dorcas Lord.

Mercy was born in York Village to Jonathan Young, Jr. and Mercy Nowell.

There are two recorded wedding dates for Moses and Mercy: 27 Oct 1788 in York, York County and 10 Jan 1789 in Levant, Penobscot County. The second seems to be an error made by a later transcriber.

Apart from Moses IV, who claimed to be from New Hampshire, their children were variously reported born in Ossippee or Berwick, Penobscot County. Both locations are actually in York County, the better part of 200 miles south of Penobscot County. (“Ossippee” presumably means the area of Little Ossippee Lake in York County, not to be confused with Ossippee, Carroll County, New Hampshire.) Penobscot County did not exist prior to 1816, and the Hodsdons didn’t live in the area that became Penobscot County until about 1806, when Moses moved the family to either Levant or Kenduskeag.

Moses died in 1845 and is buried in the Kenduskeag Village Cemetery, Kenduskeag, Penobscot County, as are many other Hodsdons. Mercy died in 1852. Records indicate she’s buried in the same cemetery.
