Joel’s parents were Ebenezer Hinkley and Betsey Sterling Humphrey, residents of Avon, Maine. After Betsey’s death, Joel’s father Ebenezer remarried in 1838 to Sophronia Butler.

Emily was born in Phillips, Maine, the eldest child of David Morrison and Hannah Lufkin. Her father David was a miller. Emily was the only one of her siblings to survive to adulthood and have children. None of the other five made it to 20.

In the 1850 census, Joel was living with his father Ebenezer and stepmother Sophronia in Avon, and Emily was with her parents in Madrid.

Joel was a farmer. He married Emily on 30 Apr 1854, when he was 21 and Emily was just 15. Joel’s older sister Catherine had married Emily’s uncle Benjamin Lang Morrison in the 1840s, and his older brother Samuel married Emily’s aunt Eleanor Morrison sometime in the 1850s. The Hinkleys and the Morrisons clearly got along.

The 1860 census for Madrid listed Joel and Emily with their sons David and Hiram. Their next two children, Sylvader and Ella, were also born in Madrid. In 1863 or 1864 they moved to Rangeley, where Augusta was born at the beginning of 1865.

The 1870 census for Rangeley listed them with five children, David through Augusta. Emily must have been pregnant with Lura Belle at the time. Also there was 15-year-old Emma Morrison, identity undetermined. Emily did have a younger sister who went by both Emma and Julia, but she died in 1865.

The 1880 census showed all eight children still at home.

Joel died in 1894, and Emily in 1908. They are buried together in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips, Maine.

Their children’s birth records were re-transcribed at a later date by their grand-daughter Inza Toothaker Hinkley.

Children

David Ebenezer Hinkley (1856-1926)

David married Hannah J. Philbrick (1863-1944) on 3 Jul 1882. They lived in Rangeley. They had three children:

Iva May (3 May 1884-1964) — m. Frank Adelbert Hight on 1 Oct 1913

Harry Wendell (24 Jan 1889-28 Jan 1975) — m. Daisy Evelyn George about 1914; m. Marian Newbury

Eva Elizabeth (7 Oct 1893-3 Aug 1989) — m. Walter B. Davenport on 18 Sep 1913

David and Hannah divorced between 1900 and 1907, in which year he married Ida M. Morton (1869-19xx). The 1910 census showed David with Ida, and Hannah on her own with the kids.

I don’t know what happened with Ida, but David married Annie Day Ferguson (1879-????) on 2 Feb 1916. The 1920 census showed David and Anne in Rangeley, with David now going by his middle name, Ebenezer. Hannah was living with daughter Eva. David died in 1926, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. He shares a gravestone with sister Maggie. Hannah died in 1944, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, but not with David.

Hiram Edgar Hinkley (1859-1897)

Hiram married Ada Gustie Hinkley (1867-1950), daughter of Alonzo Hinkley, on 20 Oct 1883. They had one child:

Hiram died in 1897, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. The following year, Ada married Frank H. Kempton (1860-1941), with whom she had at least one more child. Ada died in 1950, and is buried with Frank in Evergreen Cemetery.

Sylvader Hinkley (1860-1933)

Sylvader married Almira Toothaker (6 Apr 1863-30 Apr 1926), daughter of Joseph H. Toothaker, on 27 Nov 1884 in Phillips. They lived in Rangeley. They had three daughters:

Hortense Evelyn (11 Jul 1886-30 Jul 1889)

Winifred Rae (28 Jul 1888-31 Jul 1975) — m. Charles W. Berry on 11 Nov 1923

Ruth Evangeline (28 Jul 1901-26 Jun 1967) — m. Virgil O. Lamb on 15 Jun 1930

The family took in boarders in later years, one of whom married Ruth. Mira died in 1926, and Sylvader in 1933. They are buried with Hortense in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley.

Ella Laura Hinkley (1862-1901)

Ella has her own entry in the family tree.

Augusta Emily Hinkley (1865-1926)

Augusta married Anson Morrill Hoar (19 Dec 1855-13 Oct 1926), son of Daniel Hoar and Hannah Abbott, on 25 Dec 1882. They lived in Rangeley. Children:

unknown boy (1883-5 Nov 1883)

Joel Sherman (5 Jul 1887-4 Feb 1968) — m. Mabel Louise Trainer on 1 Aug 1910

In 1910, they had Augusta’s niece Cherrie Toothaker (10) staying with them, Cherrie’s mother Ella having died back in 1901. They might have been raising Cherrie since she was a toddler. Augusta died in 1926, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Anson died shortly after, and is buried with her.

Lura Belle Hinkley (1870-1927)

Lura Belle married Frank Nelson Harris (Jul 1870-1952) from Salem, Maine on 15 Dec 1894. They lived in Rangeley. Children:

Mildred E. (21 Jul 1895-14 Feb 1896)

Lucille Caroline (9 Feb 1899-16 Jul 1968) — m. Walter Everett Simonton on 13 Oct 1928

Charlotte A. (10 May 1906-25 Jan 1941) — m. Charles Rudolph Tobie

Lura Belle died in 1927, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Frank died in 1952 and is buried with her.

Maggie Sophia Hinkley (1876-1924)

Maggie married Marcel Benjamin Skofield (1876-19xx) on 25 Nov 1897. The 1900 census showed them living in Rangeley with two of Marcel’s siblings. They apparently had no children, and divorced sometime after 1900.

In 1907, Maggie married Charles Berry Harris (27 Oct 1882-5 Nov 1943), and Marcel remarried the year after. Maggie and Charles remained in Rangeley, and again had no children. Maggie died in 1924, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley, sharing a gravestone with brother David. Charles remarried, died in 1943, and is buried with his second wife.

Florence Ida Hinkley (1879-1936)

Florence married Edgar Mellen Berry (15 Jan 1879-Feb 1959) from Newton, Essex County, Massachusetts on 7 Jul 1903. They lived in Lewiston, and had one child:

Norman A. (11 Nov 1905-14 Feb 1912)

In the 1930 census, Florence’s niece Cherrie Toothaker (30) was staying with them. Florence died in 1936, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Edgar moved to Portland, and in 1937 married widow Alice Louise Sullivan Sproul (1897-1963). He died in 1959, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Alice, when she died in 1963, was also buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
