Ebenezer was the sixth child of Miller Hinkley and Rachel Whitney, who lived in Lincoln and Oxford County, Maine after their 1785 marriage in Georgetown, Sagadahoc County. There’s a record for a Massachusetts soldier named Ebenezer Hinkley serving in the War of 1812.
Betsy was from Maine, details unknown. She could have been the Betty or Betsy Humphrey born 6 Sep 1795 in North Yarmouth, Cumberland County, but that’s just speculation.
Ebenezer and Betsy married on 4 Mar 1820. The 1820 census showed them in Township 1, Oxford County, neighboring Ebenezer’s parents and some of his married siblings.
In 1830, they were still in what was by then Berlin, Oxford County. They had six children: two girls age 5-9, and two girls and two boys under 5. It doesn’t seem very likely that they could have had two other, unknown girls born between 1825 and 1830, so I suspect they had taken in two orphaned nieces.
They moved to either Phillips or Strong, Franklin County in the 1830s. Betsy died in 1836, six months after the birth of her son Moses. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips.
Ebenezer married Sophronia Butler (1802-16 Nov 1875) on 25 Mar 1838. Their children:
Martha E. (12 Feb ?1839?-28 Sep 1914) — m. Wellington W. Loring on 17 Jul 1859; m. Selden S. Bailey on 31 Jan 1868
Ephraim (29 Dec 1840-15 Mar 1889) — m. Julia Melvina Cressey on 15 May 1865
Nathan Ulysses or Upham (15 Mar 1844-24 Dec 1901) — m. Julia Ann Toothaker about 1867
The 1840 census showed the family in Avon: a man in his forties, two women in their thirties, two girls age 15-19, two boys age 10-14, a boy age 5-9, and a boy and girl under 5. That accounts for all seven of the children born up to that time, from Catherine to Martha. I don’t know who the other woman was.
The 1850 census for Avon showed Ebenezer (52) and Sophronia (46) with children Samuel F. (23), Joel (17), Moses S. (13), Martha E. (11), Ephraim (9), and Nathan W. (6).
Ebenezer died in 1868 and is buried with Betsy in Evergreen Cemetery. Sophronia died in 1875 and is buried with him as well. According to the gravestone, both Betsy and Sophronia died on their birthdays. Coincidences do happen, of course, but what are the odds? I suspect whoever was carving the stone didn’t know dates of birth, and decided to wing it.
Catherine married Benjamin Lang Morrison, Sr. (19 Apr 1818-18 Aug 1883) from Candia, New Hampshire, son of Hinkley ancestors David Morrison Sr. and Eleanor Lang. They lived in Phillips. They had nine children, and I have names for eight:
Betsey Jo (Dec 1845-6 Jun 1917) — m. Cyrus B. Odell on 16 Nov 1861
Fannie (7 Mar 1847-18 May 1922) — m. Eliphalet Macomber on 4 Dec 1870
Olive (Dec 1849-27 Dec 1880) — m. Joel W. Carlton on 1 Jun 1871
Mary (1852-18xx) — m. Russell Macomber on 12 Apr 1873
Benjamin L., Jr. (~1857-29 Nov 1910) — m. Flora Isabelle Rogers on 30 Jan 1880
Catherine/Kathleen E. “Katie” (Mar 1859-1943) — m. Frank Alfred Hamilton on 17 Dec 1878; m. John Andrew Goodwin on 26 Aug 1886
Louisa Victoria (17 Jul 1861-30 Dec 1936) — m. Charles H. Pinkham on 18 May 1879; m. Charles E. Berry on 2 Jun 1906
Evie (4 Feb 1866-18 Oct 1879)
The 1850 census for Franklin County showed them with daughters Betsey Jo (5), Fanny (3), and Olive (10 months). In 1860 they were in Sandy River Plantation, Franklin County with Betsey J. (15), Fanny (13), Olive (10), Mary (8), B. L. Jr. (3), and Catharine (1).
Some kind of disruption befell the family in the 1860s. The 1870 census showed Benjamin Jr. (13) living with his married sister Betsey Jo, Mary (18) at a women’s boarding house in Lewiston, and what I think were Catherine and daughter Katie living with a Martha Morrison (76), who I speculate was Benjamin’s aunt, in Sanford, York County. There are records from about this time of a Benjamin L. Morrison and Louisa Morrison out in San Francisco, but no evidence to verify it was them.
By 1880, Catherine and Benjamin Sr. were back together in Phillips, no kids. Benjamin listed his occupation as wheelwright. He died in 1883. In 1885, Catherine married James Ripley Macomber (7 Feb 1822-12 Mar 1903), widowed father-in-law of her daughters Fannie and Mary. The 1900 census showed them living in Phillips, and noted that Catherine was the mother of nine children, five still living. That would be Betsey, Fannie, Benjamin Jr., Katie, and Louisa. Catherine died in 1904 and is buried with Benjamin Sr. and their daughter Evie in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips.
Jane married John Searles (~1820-????) in the 1840s. I can’t find any record of them, but they had at least one child:
Oscar (1847-1 Dec 1864)
Jane died in 1851 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Like the gravestone inscriptions for her mother and stepmother, hers falsely claims that the date of her death was her birthday. Oscar was living with Jane’s brother Samuel in the 1860 census. He enlisted in the 2nd Maine Cavalry, Company F on 31 Oct 1863 by lying about his age, died on 1 Dec 1864, and is buried in Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida.
Samuel married Eleanor Morrison (15 Apr 1831-14 Jun 1898), daughter of David Morrison Sr. and Eleanor Lang, in the 1850s. They seem to have had only one child:
Ida F. (~1857-????) — prob. died young
In 1860 they were in Strong with Ida, and Samuel’s brother Moses (24) was living with them, along with Eleanor’s older sister Louisa Morrison (40) and Samuel’s nephew Oscar Searles (13). In 1870 they were in Phillips, with no Ida. One George D. Hinkley (23) was living with them. This was almost certainly Samuel’s first cousin once removed George Dana Hinkley (1847-1916), who was also listed in 1870 living with his parents in Madrid. Apparently the census caught him twice. Samuel died in 1872 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Eleanor died in 1898 and is buried with him.
Ebenezer, Jr. married Martha W. Emerson on 11 Nov 1855. Don’t know what happened to her. He married the way-too-young Priscilla J. Cressey (Feb 1844-27 Mar 1901) on 23 Sep 1858 in Augusta. Known children:
Fred (1860-????) — prob. died young
Austin Edward (1 Nov 1877-1923) — m. Edna A. Ross on 11 Oct 1900; ?m. Hannah Philbrick in 19xx?
The 1860 census showed them in Strong with infant son Fred, next door to Ebenezer’s brothers Samuel and Moses. By 1870 they were living in Rangeley with no children; Ebenezer was listing himself as a speculator, and Priscilla as a milliner and dressmaker. There’s an account that they had a child named Ida, but I can’t find that. Maybe that was a different Ebenezer Hinkley.
In 1880 Ebenezer and Priscilla were running a hotel in Rangeley. Their son Austin was the only child with them. They were still in Rangeley in 1900. Ebenezer and Priscilla died less than two weeks apart in 1901 and are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley.
Joel has his own entry in the family tree.
Moses married Sarah A. Moody (1837-22 Feb 1890) in 1864 in “New Portland”, Somerset County. Known children:
Nellie (Feb 1866-17 Jul 1943) — m. Walter C. Beedy on 4 Oct 1885
Ella (1868-1949) — never married
Lillian H. (May 1870-1938) — m. Walter Scott Toothaker on 15 Apr 1896
The 1870 and 1880 censuses showed Moses, Sarah, and their daughters in Phillips, along with Sarah’s mother. Sarah died in 1890. In 1892, Moses married Tryphena C. Dow Vining (1846-8 May 1906), a widow from Strong. In 1900 Moses and Tryphena were living in Phillips, with one boarder. Moses died in 1902 and is buried with Sarah in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Tryphena died in 1906 in Livermore Falls.
Martha married Wellington Wharf Loring (16 Mar 1837-186x) in 1859. They lived in Richmond, Sagadahoc County. They had one child:
Nathan Wellington (22 Sep 1865-9 May 1934) — m. Martha Eliza “Mattie” Shaw on 8 Jul 1891
Wellington must have died in the late 1860s. Martha married widower Selden S. Bailey (25 Jul 1829-1888) in 1868 in Augusta. Their children:
Herbert Walter (25 Jan 1872-25 Feb 1942) — m. Mary O. Mulliken on 11 Apr 1899; m. Alice M. Redman
Nathan Hinkley (16 Jul 1877-24 Jun 1931) — m. Daisy B. Grover on 31 Mar 1897; m. Viola Bernice Spring on 22 May 1910
Martha (16 Feb 1882-????)
I can’t find them in the census for 1870 or 1880. Selden died in 1888. Martha died in 1914, and is buried with Selden in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips.
Ephraim married Julia Melvina Cressey (9 Nov 1835-17 Dec 1913) in 1865. They lived in Rangeley, and had two children:
Alice Josephine “Josie” (23 Sep 1869-21 Nov 1921) — m. William Henry Scamman on 26 Jun 1895
Grace Mary (May 1871-18 May 1950) — m. William T. Barbour on 2 Nov 1899
Ephraim died in 1888, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Julia died in 1913 and is buried with him.
Nathan married Julia Ann Toothaker (28 Aug 1848-30 Apr 1932), daughter of Hinkley ancestors Abner Toothaker and Phoebe Wilbur, about 1867. They had four children:
Bertha Lillian (8 Sep 1868-28 Jul 1948) — m. Arbo C. Norton on 1 Jan 1898
Clara Elizabeth (27 Jul 1875-20 Feb 1925) — m. Daniel F. Field on 7 Jul 1896
Abner Toothaker (24 Oct 1877-21 Dec 1922) — m. Marion Cruikshank on 17 Apr 1911
Harry Farrar (7 Apr 1887-30 Oct 1961) — m. Ida Christine Wilhelmina Hegman on 8 Jun 1917
Nathan died in 1901 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Farmington. Julia and son Abner moved to Manhattan, where the 1910 census showed them; at some point, son Harry joined them. Julia returned to Phillips, Maine, where she was living with daughter Clara by 1920. By 1930, Julia was living alone in Farmington. She died in 1932, and is buried with Nathan.
Abner remained in New York City, married, had two daughters named Marion and Charlotte born about 1915 and 1921, and then died in 1922. His wife remarried to one David Saylor Wilson (1882-1940) and remained in New York, where she was from. Son Harry also married in New York City.
