Marcel was born in Tracadie, New Brunswick, the second child of Moïse Doiron dit Gould and Brigitte Saulnier.

Susanne was the daughter of Placide Brun and Susanne Huntley of Nova Scotia. She was born in Bas-Cap-Pelé, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, where her father around 1820 built a house that still stands.

Marcel and Susanne married on 28 Feb 1843 in Barachois, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, and just in time – their first child, Magdeleine, was born in Shemogue, Westmorland County less than 3 months later. The wedding was witnessed by Marcel’s uncle Olivier Doiron and Marcel’s friend Pierre Cormier. Baptism records show that the couple remained in Shemogue until at least 1847.

Susanne’s parents and some of her siblings moved to Richibucto, Kent County, New Brunswick in 1853. It’s possible that she and Marcel moved with them, but there’s no evidence. I can’t find them in census data before 1871, as either Doiron or Gould. There were lots of Goulds in the 1851 census for Westmorland County, but no Doirons, and no Marcel & Susanne. The 1861 census for the area is largely illegible.

By 1871, Marcell & Susan Gould were living in Richibucto. The children were Jane (25), Jeremiah (23), Mary Ann (19), Marcell (16), William (13), John (11), Samuel (6), and Adeline Smith (3). Marcel was a carpenter. All members of the family were listed as French Catholic, born in New Brunswick. A Gallant family next door to them included John Gallant (19), very probably the man that Mary Ann later married.

In 1881, “Marshall” (65) and Susan (56) Gould were still in Richibucto with children William (20), John (17), Samuel (14), Philip (9), and I think it says Adeline (13). Son Jeremiah (32) was living nearby with wife Maggie (24), son George (4), and daughter Mina (Salamina, 1). Son Marcelin Doiron was living in Acadieville, Kent County, New Brunswick with his wife Rose Anne and their children Jacques (5), Sophie (4), and Francois (1).

In 1891, Marcel (76) was living with son Marcellin (35), son’s wife Rosanne (38), and seven children in Acadieville. Susanne was not there, so she probably died in the 1880s. Four of their children were settled in Richibucto:

* Jeramiah Gould (40), ship carpenter, and wife Margarett (34), with six children

* Mary Ann (37), with husband John Gallant (40) and five children

* William Gould (33), laborer, and wife Jane (21); children Daniel (1) and Joseph (1 month)

* Samuel Gould (24), laborer, and wife Catherine (20); son David (11 months)

In the 1901 census, Marcel, reportedly born 23 Oct 1815, was living with his nephew Seraphen Doiron and his nephew’s very large extended family in Richibucto.

Marcel, listed as a farmer from Tracadie, died in Richibucto on 4 Sep 1903, reported age 87. The death notice lists cause of death as “old age”, and duration as “one month”, which is a nice trick if you can pull it off.

Mary Eva Augusta (7 Aug 1917-????) — m. Lester Pennel Nason on 5 Aug 1939

The 1901 census showed them in Richibucto with children David (10), Fred (7), Richard (6), Mary (3), and John E. B. (4 months), next door to Samuel’s brother-in-law John Gallant. This conflicts with birth records that show Frederick and Richard both born in 1893, but a few months apart. Given the biological implausibility of that scenario, I think the birth records were the screw-up – Richard and Joseph were twins. Joseph is missing from the census because he died young.

The 1911 census showed them still there with 8 children, ages 18 to 1. There was still a Gallant family next door, but it was headed by George, John Gallant’s first cousin once removed. (He had been there in 1901 as well.)

The 1921 census showed Samuel Gould living with the family of his niece Maude Gould Kelly in Richibucto, but listed as father-in-law. Odd, since Maude’s father Jeremiah was still alive. And where was Catherine?

Catherine died in 1934 in St. John, New Brunswick. Several of her children married there, although one got married in Los Angeles, of all places. Samuel is said to have died in 1944.

Adeline Smith (~1869-????)

I know nothing about Adeline’s origins or how the family came to adopt her.

Philippe Gould (~1871-19xx)

Philippe (29), laborer, born in New Brunswick, married Julienne Richard of Prince Edward Island on 28 Jul 1901 in Boston. Philip listed his parents as Marcel Gould and Susie O’Brien. Julienne’s were Joseph Richard and Mary Doucette. They settled in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Their children were:

Mary N. (1 Jul 1902-????)

Gertrude (~1905-????)

Ellen/Helen (5 Mar 1909-????)

They appear in the 1910 and 1920 census for Chelsea, Ward 2, although Julienne, having passed through a brief “Juliana” stage, was listed as “Annie”. In the 1940 census, Philip was in Ward 1, apparently alone, but the record still listed him as married.
