Eucharistes was born in Rustico or Malpeque, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, the fifth child of Dominique Arsenau and Barbe Arsenault, and baptized on 6 Jan 1814.

Marguerite, daughter of Maxime Gallant and Anne Blanchard, was born in Rustico.

Eucharistes and Marguerite married on 28 Nov 1838 at Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Miscouche, Prince Edward Island. After their first child, they moved a few miles west to Egmont Bay, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, where most of their children were born.

Sometime in the 1860s, they moved to the mainland. The 1871 census of Ste-Marie-de-Kent, Kent County, New Brunswick listed Euchariste (57) and Marguerite (52) Arsenault of Prince Edward Island, with sons “Eubert” (19), Marc (15), and Jean (12). Cajetan, the youngest child, must have died. Euchariste was a cooper (tonnelier). Living next door was son Léon (26) with his wife Magdeleine (26) and son Fabien (11 months).

The 1881 census of Ste-Marie lists Eucharist (67) and Marguerite (62) Arsenault, with sons Mark (24) and Jean (22). The boys were farmers. Euchariste was still listed as a cooper.

In 1891, Euchariste (77) and Marguerite (73) Gallant were living further inland in St. Paul, Kent County, New Brunswick with son Jean (32), daughter-in-law Susanne (22), and grandson Conrade (3).

Eucharistes died of consumption in St. Paul in 1895. Marguerite died there of flu in 1907.

As of 2023, familysearch.org trees list five more children for this family who were supposedly born in the 1860s. I’m not listing them because A) the 1871 census doesn’t show any of them, B) Marguerite’s age when they were supposedly born ranged from 44 (possible) to 47 (really pushing it), and C) no documentation is given.

Children

Joseph Eloi “Joe Carise” Arsenault (1840-1934)

Joe, the eldest, remained on Prince Edward Island rather than moving to New Brunswick when his parents did. He married Marie Gaudet (Nov 1839-1913) on 7 Jan 1862. They lived in the area of Wellington, and had at least ten children:

Mary (~1863-????)

Marguerite (18 Mar 1866-19xx) — m. Fidèle Gaudet on 23 Nov 1885

Jean Albert (7 Mar 1867-19xx) — m. Mary Catherine Poirier on 12 Jan 1892

Joseph (~1870-????)

Bella (~1872-187x)

Leo (~1873-????)

Emile (8 Apr 1875-19xx) — m. Elizabeth Poirier on 5 Nov 1898

Elizabeth (6 Aug 1876-19xx) — m. Joseph Blanchard about 1891

Wilbert (~1879-27 Jun 1954) — m. Bridget Marie Anne Arsenault

Marie Bella (19 Nov 1881-19xx) — m. John Emile Arsenault on 23 Feb 1914

The 1881 census for Prince, Prince Edward Island listed Joe (41) as a stationmaster. The family consisted of wife Mary (41) and children Mary (18), Margaret (16), John (13), Joseph (11), Leo (8), Emill (6), Elizabeth (4), and Wilbert (2).

The 1901 census had Joe and Mary, both 61, with Emile, Bella, Emile’s wife Elizabeth, and a 10-year-old lodger. The 1911 census showed Joe heading a large household consisting of himself and Marie, widowed daughter Elizabeth and her two sons, son Emile and his family, daughter Bella, and a 17-year-old girl servant.

Joe was a schoolteacher until 1873, the railway stationmaster at Wellington until 1915, a justice of the peace, and owner of a 183-acre farm where he raised and trained farm horses and race horses.

Marie died in 1913. On 30 Sep 1918, Joe married the widow of Captain Perry of Alberton.

In 1930 or 1931, Joe issued an open challenge to anyone 85 or older to take him on in a three-mile skating race. No one tried, but in 1932 the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association honored him as the World Champion Aged Skater, a title that got him into Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Joe died in 1934.

Marie Anne Arsenault (1841-????)

A Marie Arseneaux married Pierre Bernard (1841-????) on 24 Nov 1863 on Prince Edward Island, a few weeks after Pierre’s brother Joseph married another Marie Arsenault as described below. I can’t trace her any further, but she was probably the daughter of this family. She was not the Marie Arsenault who married Pierre/Peter Bernard on Prince Edward Island in 1856, had at least eight children with him, and moved to New Brunswick in the late 1860s, because that woman was born about 1834 (and showed up, widowed and living with three of her adult children, in the 1920 census for Bristol, Massachusetts).

Marie Arsenault (1843-189x)

Marie married Joseph Bernard (16 Jan 1839-1 Nov 1910) on Prince Edward Island on 12 Oct 1863, with her younger brother Léon as a witness. Known children:

André (21 Oct 1864-186x)

Azélie (26 Sep 1866-30 Jun 1921) — m. Julien D. Richard on 10 Feb 1890

Sophie (20 Jun 1868-19xx) — m. Luc Leblanc on 5 Mar 1889

Marie-Blanche (18 Jun 1871-19xx) — m. Frederic Leblanc on 19 Aug 1889

Marguerite (19 Jul 1873-1 May 1930) — m. Maxime Roy on 16 May 1898

André (~1877-31 Aug 1932) — m. ???

Joseph Gilbert (30 Jan 1880-19xx) — m. Marie Alma Bastarache on 8 Nov 1909

Eugénie (19 Nov 1881-????) — prob. died young

Emile (~1885-19xx)

Places of birth listed for the children indicate that about 1867 they moved from Prince Edward Island to New Brunswick, where they no longer had Father Perrey to baptize their children and see to it that the baptisms were recorded.

The 1871 and 1881 censuses showed them in St. Mary, Kent, New Brunswick. Joseph’s parents Ruffin Bernard and Suzanne Caissie Bernard were living with them. In the 1891 census, Joseph (52) and Marie (48) had Marguerite (16), Andre (13), Gilbert (11), and Emile (6) still at home.

By 1901, Marie had died, and Joseph, widowed, was living with sons André (23), Gilbert (21), and Emile (15). On 3 Jul 1904, Joseph married Philomène LeBlanc (~1846-19xx). Joseph died in 1910 at Saint-Paul-de-Kent, New Brunswick.

Léon Arsenault (1845-1926)

Léon married Justine-Madeleine Desroches (26 Sep 1843-31 Mar 1923) in 1869 in Bouctouche, Kent, New Brunswick. Children:

Fabien Leon (12 Apr 1870-26 Jun 1937) — m. Demerise Robichaud on 25 May 1896

Cajètan Leon “John” (27 Aug 1871-6 Jun 1944) — m. Marie Sophie Landry in 1904

Melase (20 Jun 1873-????)

Joseph L. (15 Nov 1874-19xx) — m. Elizabeth Cormier on 26 Feb 1900

Eustrazade Joseph (14 Jan 1878-19xx)

Jean Albert (~1877-?1959?) — prob. m. Philomene Belliveau on 4 May 1908

Marie Margarite (19 Nov 1886-19xx) — never married (nun)

In 1871, they were living at St. Mary’s, Kent, Carleton, New Brunswick, next door to Léon’s parents. There they remained. In 1911, they had Eustrazade and Margarite still at home, and were living a few houses away from Léon’s sister Apolline.

Records for son Jean Albert are tangled up with those of a namesake from another family.

Apolline Arsenault (1847-1936)

Apolline married Hilarion Arseneau (2 Jun 1841-28 Oct 1916) in 1870. They had at least five children:

Camille (14 Mar 1871-19xx) — m. Osithe Bastarache on 8 May 1899

Jane (~1873-????)

Sarah (~1875-????)

Mary Ann (1880-19xx) — m. Eloi Richard on 7 Feb 1898

Joseph (Sep 1889-19xx)

They moved to New Brunswick like others of the family. The muddled 1881 census for Westmorland, New Brunswick listed them as Larry (39), Carmeal (34), Poline (10), Jane (8), Sarah (6), and Mary (10 months), switching the names of Apolline and son Camille as well as mangling them. Haven’t found them in 1891.

In 1901 the household in Kent, New Brunswick included sons Joseph (14) and Camile (30), plus Camille’s wife and daughter. In 1911 they were in St. Mary, Kent, and the household included Joseph, Camille, daughter-in-law Osite, and four grand-daughters. Hilarion died in 1916 at St. Paul, Westmorland, New Brunswick. Apolline died there in 1936.

Sophique Arsenault (1849-????)

Sophique married Felix Gaudet (17 Aug 1840-????) in 1873. Their children:

George (17 Sep 1874-????)

Marie Anne (15 Jan 1875-????)

Marguerite Anne “Maggie” (8 Nov 1877-19xx)

Elizabeth “Lizzie” (15 Mar 1879-19xx)

Mary (10 Feb 1881-????) — prob. died young

Adeline (31 May 1883-19xx)

Charlotte (15 Jul 1885-????) — prob. died young

Catherine (1886-19xx) — m. Walter Joseph Gerrier on 27 Apr 1908

Jerome (1888-19xx)

Mary A. (1893-19xx)

Sophia (1896-19xx)

They lived in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island. The 1901 census showed them with children Maggie, Lizzie, Adaline, Catherine, Jerome, Mary A., and Sophia.

Hebert Arsenault (1851-????)

No information after 1871

Marc Arsenault (1856-1936)

Marc has his own entry in the family tree.

Jean Euchariste Arsenault (1858-19xx)

Jean married Suzanne Bernard (29 Jun 1869-19xx) from Egmont Bay in 1887 at Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick. They had 14 children:

Conrad (8 Mar 1888-????)

Joseph Israel (28 Oct 1891-189x) — died young

Joseph Henri (8 Feb 1892-18 Sep 1947) — m. Marie Eva Melançon on 18 Nov 1918

Joseph Hector (30 Jul 1894-19xx) — m. Mary Obéline Caissie about 1925

Jean Pierre (31 Jan 1897-????)

Joseph Israel (28 Oct 1898-May 1978) — m. Anna Caissie on 11 Apr 1928

Joseph Edmond (24 Oct 1900-23 Jun 1976)

Joseph Barnaby (20 Jun 1903-4 Jun 1971) — m. Olivine M. Zinanni on 11 Jan 1933

Marie Alice (14 Jun 1905-after 1950) — m. Nicholas V. “Nick” Arsenion on 19 Nov 1930

Marie Beatrice (14 Jun 1905-????)

Marie Elionore (19 Nov 1908-????)

Gilbert (26 Jan 1910-21 May 1982) — m. Cécile M. Bourque on 12 Sep 1940

Edward (13 Jan 1912-????)

Joseph Robert (12 Jan 1914-????)

In the 1891 census, they and son Conrad were living with Jean’s parents in St. Paul, Kent County, New Brunswick. In 1911, Jean (53) and Suzanne (43) were still in Kent County, with ten children ages 19 down to 2, Honore (Henri) to Gilbert. Amazingly, they had two more children after that.

Cajetan Arsenault (1861-????)

Cajetan probably died young.
