Moïse was born in Abram’s Village, Prince County, Prince Edward Island to Abraham Arsenault and Marguerite Arsenault, and baptized on 10 Mar 1819 at Saint-Abraham, which is another name for the village but presumably refers to a church. The village was founded by Moïse’s grandfather Jean-Baptiste Arsenault, and named for his great-grandfather, Abraham “le Petit” Arsenault (born 1702), one of the earliest settlers.

Cécile was the daughter of Raphael Caissie and Victoire Arsenault of Richibucto, Kent County, New Brunswick. She was named for an older sister who died in 1819. Her family name was also spelled Caisey, Caisse, Caissy, and even Casey. It reportedly traces to an Irishman named Roger Casey born about 1648.

The couple married around 1840, and settled in Abram’s Village, Moïse’s home town. Most of their children were born there, and baptized by Father S. E. Perrey in the church of St. Jacques at Egmont Bay, a mile or so north of Abram’s Village. Magdeline, the next to last, was instead baptized at the church of Notre Dame in Mont-Carmel, on the south shore of the cape a few miles south-southeast of the village. (The present-day Notre Dame du Mont-Carmel was built in 1901. I don’t know whether it’s on the same site as the 19th century church.)

In 1864 or 1865, the family moved to the parish of Ste-Marie-de-Kent, Kent County, New Brunswick, where Adéline, the youngest, was born. The 1871 census found them there: Moyse Arsenault (53), wife Cécile (50), and children Onésime (22), Moyse (20), Marie (17), Cécile (14), Joseph (11), Abraham (9), and Adeline (5). Only mother Cécile and little Adéline are listed as born in New Brunswick; the rest are from Prince Edward Island.

Cécile died in 1880. In 1881, Joseph (20), Abram (19), and Adéline (15) were still living with their father (63). He died sometime in the 1880s.

Children

Julienne “Julia” Arsenault (1841-?1930?)

Julienne married Aristobule Athanase “Amos” Gallant (4 Feb 1841-2 Oct 1893) on 7 Nov 1864 on Prince Edward Island. They settled in New Brunswick. The 1881 census showed them in Nelson, Northumberland County. They had thirteen children. I have names for ten, most of them gleaned from the 1881 census, and doubts about some of the names and dates:

Onésime (1868-????) — m. Marie LeBlanc on 8 Jan 1894

John Amos (1871-1923) — m. Marie Ida Gaudet on 30 Nov 1901

Maggie (1871-????)

Odeal (boy, 1874-????)

Adolph (boy, 1874-????)

Isabelle “Bella” (1874-?Aug 1936?) — m. Joseph Arsenault dit Anderson on 28 May 1898

Alnor (1878-????)

Moïse A. “Moses” (5 Jun 1880-?1971?) — m. Mary Alma Arsenault on 10 Nov 1901

Henry J. (1882-19xx)

Adeline M. (1884-19xx) — m. Alfred J. Arsenault on 20 Oct 1901

In 1890, they moved to Chelsea, just north of Boston, Massachusetts. At the time of Amos’s death in 1893 of liver cancer, they were living at 92 Crescent Avenue, Chelsea. He was buried in what looks like Magdalene Cemetery, which I can’t find. The 1900 census listed Julienne, mother of 13 children, 9 still living, living alone in Chelsea and working as a nurse. I find no record of her thereafter. She reportedly died in 1930, but, again, there’s no record.

Barulas Arsenault (1843-????)

Barulas was reportedly adopted/taken by a wealthy English couple who were on Prince Edward Island as part of the island’s royal government. Their names are unknown. This is the basis for the Arsenault family legend of “Uncle Barrelass”.

Raphael Arsenault (1845-1901)

Raphael married Geneviève Girouard (~1848-19??) from New Brunswick on 7 Jan 1870. Known children:

Maxime (22 Sep 1872-19??) — m. Marie Philomene Babineau on 11 Feb 1901

Marie Virginie (17 Feb 1876-????) — m. Eugene Doucet on 15 Nov 1897

Joseph Lévi (28 Dec 1878-Sep 1969) — m. Marie Joséphine Richard on 26 Aug 1907

Fabien (9 Mar 1881-21 Jan 1960) — m. Eugénie Richard on 3 Oct 1904

Louis J. (21 Feb 1884-1948) — m. Katherine M. Desroches in Aug 1911

Joseph Emile (3 Aug 1887-19??)

Ida (~1894-19??) — m. Antoine Doiron on 23 Nov 1927

Marie Zelia (8 Mar 1894-????)

The 1891 census showed Raphel (47) and Geneviève (43) in Rogersville with children Maxime (19), Marie (15), Levi (12), Fabian (10), Louis (7), and Joseph (4). The 1901 census showed them still there, ages 56 and 53, with newly married son Maxime as head of household, and children Levi, Fabien, Louis, Emile, and Ida still at home. Raphael died soon after. The 1911 census found Geneviève, widowed, and daughter Ida living with son Fabien and his family in Rogersville.

Son Levi settled in Mexico, Oxford County, Maine.

Onésime Arsenault (1848-????)

No record found for Onésime after the 1871 census.

Moïse M. Arsenault (1851-????)

Moïse married Marie Madeleine Maillet of South Weldford, New Brunswick on 6 Feb 1876. They had at least one child:

Marie Vitalline (1878-????) — m. Dominick Boudreau on 18 Sep 1899

Victoire Arsenault (1852-1933)

Victoire married Thaddée Robichaud (18 Jul 1850-20 Mar 1931) on 17 Jan 1881. They had ten children:

Julienne (1874-????) — m.

Edouard (1877-????) — m.

Odille (1877-????) — m.

Thomas (1878-????) — m.

Philippe T. (18 Dec 1881-19xx) — m. Elodie Anne DesVarennes

Adolphe (1885-????) — m.

Dousieye (1886-19xx) — m.

James (1887-19xx) — m.

Thaddée (14 Jul 1890-1958) — m. Elmire Beatrice Bastarache on 23 Apr 1923; m. Marie Elise Bastarache

Joseph Augustus (13 Oct 1892-????) — m.

Victoire died of pneumonia on 3 Nov 1933 in Saint-Paul, New Brunswick. The certificate gave her age as 82, off by a year.

Marie-Susanne Arsenault (1855-????)

Susanne married Dominique Arsenault (20 Oct 1840-????) about 1874/1875. Another account has her marrying Narcisse Gautreau. Of course, she could have done both.

Cécile Arsenault (1857-1952)

Cécile married Thaddée Bourque (1853-????), son of Urbain Bourque and Marie Lavoie, on 17 Jan 1881. They had two children:

Adélard (1882-????)

Marie Blanche (14 Mar 1883-8 Dec 1883)

Cécile married Thomas Robichaud (28 May 1861-5 May 1889), son of Thomas Robichaud and Nathalie Lirette, on 1 Feb 1886 at Ste-Paul-de-Kent. They also had two children:

Nathalie (18 Nov 1886-6 Apr 1887)

Joseph Edmond (27 Mar 1888-2 Dec 1971) — m. Emilienne Marie Ann DesRoches on 12 Aug 1930

She married Euloge McGrath (11 Mar 1869-????), son of André McGrath and Domithilde Caissy, on 11 Aug 1890 at St-Paul-de-Kent. They had four more children, the first two born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and the other two in New Brunswick:

Flora (13 Mar 1892-19xx) — m. Emmanuel Arsenault on 20 May 1918

Marie Bella (13 Mar 1892-12 Jul 1980)

Joseph Hector (11 Jan 1895-????)

Isaie (25 Oct 1897-28 Oct 1986) — m. Olive Drisdelle on 8 Feb 1921

Cécile died in 1952 in St. Wilfred, Alnwick, Northumberland County, New Brunswick.

Son Adélard seems to have taken McGrath as his surname. Isaie and Bella seem to have turned it into “McGraw”.

Joseph Arsenault (1860-????)

Cannot find Joseph after the 1881 census. Too common a name.

Abraham Arsenault (1861-????)

No luck tracking Abraham past 1881. There was another Abraham Arsenault, just a few months older, from Egmont Bay, PEI whose family also moved to Ste-Marie-de-Kent, Kent County, New Brunswick, and who married Ruffine Bristol in 1884. Different guy. Our Abraham might have been the one who married Salome LeBlanc in 1886 in Rogersville, or he might not.

Marie Magdeline Arsenault (1864-????)

TBD

Marie Adéline Arsenault (1865-1946)

Adéline has her own entry in the family tree.
