Mary A. (9 Jul 1877-23 Jul 1877)
Israel was the son of James I. Luther and Phebe Currier. He claimed to be born in Pittsburg, Coos County, New Hampshire. By 1842, his family was living in the Hereford sub-district of Sherbrooke District, Quebec, just across the border from Canaan, Vermont.
Maria was the youngest child of Hiram Patterson and Amanda Danford, and was probably born in southern Ontario. Her family lived in Quebec’s Missisquoi County, in Ontario, and in New York before moving to Hereford.
Israel and Maria married in 1858 in Hereford. The 1861 census for Hereford, Compton County listed farmer Israel B. (30), wife Maria (20), and son Charles E. (3). Maria’s older brother Hiram Patterson, Jr. (25) and mother Amanda (62) were living with the Cable or Gable family next door, and Maria’s father Hiram, Sr. (67) was living with the Wells family a couple of farms away. Israel’s parents James (69) and Pheba (75) and sisters Abigail L. (37) and Pheba Ann (33) were in another part of the township.
The 1871 census for Hereford Township, Compton District listed Israel (39) and Maria (30), with children Charles (12), Burley (8), and Nellie (6). Israel’s older sister Abigail Luther Laughton was next door with her husband James.
The family had a child named Mary in July 1877 who died the same month, as indicated by a gravestone in East Hereford that names her parents. There might have been other children born in the 1870s and late 1860s for whom there’s no record, but, if so, they weren’t long-lived either.
The 1881 census listed Israel “Lauther” (49), wife “Mary” (40), and son Elbridge B. (18) in Coaticook, Stanstead County, Quebec. Maria’s brother Hiram Patterson, Jr. was living nearby.
The April 1891 census found Israel (59) and Maria (50) in Paquetteville, supposedly an old name for Compton, with son Elbridge (27), Elbridge’s wife Elvina (25), and grandson Elbridge (7 months). Maria listed her parents as being from Quebec.
Looks like they sold the Quebec farm in the 1890s. The 1900 US census records Isrial (sic) Luther and wife Maria living in his mother’s hometown of Canaan, Essex County, Vermont. Israel said his parents were from New Hampshire, which might be true of his mother at least, since there are communities in this area that extend into both states. Israel also said he married in 1858 and had two living children (that would be Charles and Burleigh), although only boarders were living with him and Maria.
Israel died of chronic endocarditis in 1905 in Wolcott, Vermont, presumably at the home of his son Charles. In 1910, Maria (69) was living with son Burley and his family in Stewartstown, New Hampshire. In 1920, at the time of her death of cancer, Maria (78) was living with grandson Elbridge Luther and his family in Craftsbury, Vermont. Maria is buried with Israel in Herbert Lawton Memorial Advent Cemetery, East Hereford, Quebec. The tombstone uses her maiden name, a common practice for this cemetery. Her death certificate lists her father as James Patterson, but I think James was his middle name.
Charles has his own entry in the family tree.
Sidney died at age 17 months. He’s buried in Old Hall Stream Cemetery in East Hereford.
Burley married Sarah Elvina Moulton (6 Oct 1865-11 Jan 1929) of Coaticook, Quebec on 22 Feb 1882. Their children:
Hattie (27 Apr 1883-20 Sep 1883)
Abbie P. (~31 Jan 1885-23 Jun 1890)
Henry D. (18 Feb 1887-1 Jul 1890)
Elbridge Sidney (7 Oct 1890-1 Jul 1963) — m. Pearl Esther Boardman on 14 Dec 1909; m. Katherine Darling/Silver on 5 Mar 1921
Elwin Burleigh (25 Aug 1893-3 Jul 1957) — m. Florence I. Mason on 25 Apr 1917
George Newton (31 Dec 1894-22 Feb 1969) — m. Ruby Haynes on 26 Apr 1919
Gladys Maria (Apr 1896-29 Sep 1992) — m. Ernest Leland Clark in 1912; m. ??? Sherman
Hila Mae (7 Dec 1898-28 Sep 1983) — m. H. Harold Smith on 29 Sep 1919
Beryle Edith (14 Nov 1905-27 Dec 1934) — m. Frank V. Brown on 16 Jun 1923
Their first three children died young. Things got better after that. In 1891, they were living with Burley’s parents in Pacquetteville, Quebec. By 1900, they were in Canaan, Vermont, although the census got Burley’s name as “Alberd”. They were running a boarding house. Children listed in 1900 were Elbridge (b. Canada), Elwin (b. Canada), George, Gladys Maria, and “Italy” (Hila). A few servants and a long list of boarders are there too, including Walter Johnson, Charles Luther’s brother-in-law. Beryle, their 9th and last child, was born in 1905.
The 1910 census found them in Stewartstown, New Hampshire: “Elbride” B. (46) and Sarah L. (44) Luther, with children George N. (15), Gladys M. (13), Hila M. (10), and Berl E. (4), plus Burley’s mother Maria Luther (69) and a couple of boarders. Burley was working as a night watchman. Burley died in Craftsbury, Vermont in 1918, and is buried in Branch Cemetery, Craftsbury. Sarah Elvina died in Pittsburg, New Hampshire in 1929, and is buried with Burley.
Given that there’s no record of Nellie after 1871, she probably died in the 1870s.
Mary lived only three weeks after birth. She’s buried with her parents and her brother Sidney.
Elbridge, fourth child of Burley and Sarah and the first to survive to adulthood, married Pearl Esther Boardman (7 Jul 1894-26 Dec 1918) on 14 Dec 1909 in Wolcott. In the 1910 census, no children yet, they were living either with or next door to Elbridge’s uncle Charles Luther I in Wolcott. Their children, variously born in Elmore or Craftsbury, Vermont:
Leona Elvira (24 Aug 1911-3 Mar 1997) — m. Raymond E. Tallman on 1 Nov 1928
Albert Burleigh (13 Aug 1913-3 May 1963) — m. Helen Winifred King on 25 Nov 1938
Wayne Elbridge (23 Jan 1916-Nov 1972) — m. Kathleen Morris on 5 Dec 1937
Evelyn Almeda (19 Apr 1918-18 Aug 1984) — m. Norton Everett Austin, Sr. on 24 Dec 1939
Pearl died the day after Christmas 1918. The 1920 census listed Elbridge with his mother-in-law and children in Craftsbury. Elbridge remarried on 5 Mar 1921 in Wolcott to Katherine Darling. Elbridge died in 1963 and is buried with Pearl in the Branch Cemetery in Craftsbury, where his parents are.
Son Albert is buried with his wife Helen in St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery, Fairfax, Vermont.
Elwin was the fifth child of Burley Luther. He married Florence Ida Mason (27 Jun 1898-23 Oct 1978) in 1917. They lived in Craftsbury. Their children:
Rebecca Grace (12 Feb 1918-17 Jan 2001) — m. Samuel Gordon Daniels on 30 Jun 1939
Pearl Ruby (23 Oct 1922-17 Mar 2000) — m. Albert Everett Whitcomb on 26 Aug or 7 Sep 1939; divorced
Madeline Joyce (14 Mar 1924-27 Apr 2015) — m. Primitivo Evangelista Goyenche on 28 Jun 1943
Erwin Philip (27 Jun 1931-6 Jul 1980) — m. Rena E. Moodie on 20 May 1955
Woodrow Preston “Woody” (25 Aug 1934-13 Sep 1977) — m. Betty Ann Hall on 8 Jul 1956
Elwin, and his children Pearl and Woody, are buried in Branch Cemetery, Craftsbury.
George was born in Pittsburg, New Hampshire, the sixth child of Burley Luther. He married Ruby Almeda Haynes (12 Oct 1897-1990) on 26 Apr 1919 in either Canaan, Vermont or Colebrook, New Hampshire. In 1920, he and Ruby were living with her family in Canaan. Their children:
name unknown (25 Jun 1920-1920)
Bradley Scott (15 May 1922-4 May 2012) — m. Ardys Janet Lamonda on 8 Feb 1945
Calista Anne (~1923-after 2013) — m. Robert Edward Lawson on 31 Aug 1940
Burleigh Edward (3 May 1924-31 Dec 1982) — d. in Hartford, CT
Gleigh Elvina (19 Oct 1925-2 Aug 2014) — m. Roger Edward Gendreau; divorced; m. Wade Richardson
In 1930 through 1950, they were living in Hardwick, Vermont. Family accounts say that George inherited the Luther farm in Wolcott, but the 1930 census listed him as an auto mechanic, and the 1940 and 1950 censuses had him working in a hardware store in Hardwick.
Gladys was a nurse. She married Ernest Leland Clark (1888-1970) in 1912. They had three children:
Newton Palmer (5 Nov 1913-23 Oct 1975) — m. Gladys Marie Veasey on 12 Sep 1932
Blanch Elvina Clark (25 Jan 1918-24 Apr 2011) — m. Maynard L. Marckres on 6 Sep 1935
Frances Hila (24 Sep 1925-8 Sep 1995) — m. Harley Edward Nichols on 27 Dec 1941
Ernest died in 1970. Gladys remarried to someone named Sherman. She died of congestive heart failure in 1992 at a nursing home in Morristown, Lamoille County, Vermont. Her daughter Frances Nichols of Hardwick was given as next of kin.
Frances’s husband Harley was an aircraft gunner during WWII. That sheds some light on his marriage at the end of 1941 to 16-year-old Frances. Her findagrave.com data bumped the wedding forward by 4 years.
Hila married H. Harold Smith (5 Feb 1895-1978), son of H. H. Smith and Etta Withers of Wolcott, Vermont, on 29 Sep 1919 in Hardwick, Caledonia County, Vermont. Harold had registered for the WWI draft in Indianapolis, Indiana. The draft notice said he was a machinist and was missing the 2nd and 3rd fingers of his right hand. They had one child I know of, supposedly born in Vermont, although I find no record of it:
Dorothy (21 May 1916-22 Aug 1996) — m. Robert Lee Blasingame on 1 Aug 1938
Hmm, maybe that’s why he was in Indiana in 1917. Anyway, the Florida census showed Harold and Hila in 1935 living in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida with daughter Dorothy (supposedly 17); and in 1945 in Jacksonville, Duval County with no children, Dorothy having married. Hila died in Duval County, Florida in 1983. She’s buried with Harold in Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida.
Beryle, as noted elsewhere, married Frank V. Brown. See the Brown-Hill family page for details.
