James LUTHER, Sr. (1756-20 Aug 1828) +
Mary PARKHURST (1766-1824)

Phebe N. (~1786-????)

Charlotte “Lottie” (1787-5 Mar 1866) — m. Judah Covell in 180x

James, Jr. (~1792-13 Jan 1865) — m. Phebe Currier about 1810

Giles (1794-5 Jul 1870) — m. Mary “Polly” Todd on 11 Feb 1818

Samuel Parkhurst (1801-?1878?) — m. Lydia Harlow on 26 Jul 1827

Moses (1804-1884) — m. Ruth Holden on 8 Jul 1830

Aaron N. (1807-3 Sep 1843)

Israel, Sr. (28 Mar 1810-1 Oct 1888) — m. Laura Purdy on 15 Jun 1832

James was born in either Massachusetts or Rhode Island, the son of Abia Luther and Prudence Peck. He was a private in some military unit during the Revolutionary War, as an 1818 pension record indicates, but there are no details.

Mary was from Massachusetts – reportedly from Milford in Worcester County. Her parents might have been Isaac & Sarah Parkhurst, who had a child named Mary in 1765; or Nathaniel & Eunice Parkhurst, who had a child named Mary in 1763. At the time, both of these couples were living in Waltham, near Boston.

James and Mary married on 16 Mar 1783 in Milford, Worcester County.

The 1800 census showed many Luther households in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including two James Luthers in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts, and two more in Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island. The household that was probably this family was the couple aged between 26 and 44 in Warren, who had a girl age 10-15 and a boy under 10. That would account for Lottie and either James Jr. or Giles.

The family later moved to Canaan, Essex County, Vermont, where James appeared in the 1810 census heading a household consisting of a woman between 26 and 44 (Mary), a boy age 10-15 (Giles), and four boys under 10.

The 1820 census showed James Sr. in Canaan with Mary and five others: a young man and young woman, a boy age 16-18, and two boys age 10-16. That accounts for the three youngest sons; the young couple were probably Giles and his wife. The same census had son James Jr. in Colebrook, Coos County, New Hampshire.

Mary died in 1824, and James in 1828. They’re buried in Morrison-Schoolhouse Cemetery, a very small cemetery a few miles south of Canaan at the intersection of Route 102 and Todd Hill Road. The exact location of James’s grave is undetermined. Several graves here lack markers, are marked by blank stones, or are badly worn.

Children

Phebe N. Luther (~1786-????)

No data about Phebe beyond the name. The Phebe Luther (1793-1861) who married Saunders Sherman in 1816 in Massachusetts was from a different Luther line. Ditto the Phebe Luther (1791-1873) who married Noah Chase, also in 1816, also in Massachusetts. The presence of just one girl in the 1800 census record that was probably this family suggests Phebe died young.

Charlotte “Lottie” Luther (1787-1866)

Charlotte married Judah Covell (~1773-15 Jan 1835) in the first decade of the 19th century. They settled in Colebrook, New Hampshire. The 1830 census showed them with nine children, five boys and four girls. They front-loaded the boys. Most of the dates are tentative:

James (15 Dec 1812-12 Aug 1899) — m. Clarissa Mills on 15 Oct 1835

Elmira (~1814-????) — m. Mark Springer about 1830

Timothy, Sr. (22 Jul 1815-24 Oct 1898) — m. Abiah Cogswell

William (1817-????)

John (1819-????)

Joseph York (1 Dec 1821-7 Apr 1896) — m. Sarah Jane Mills in 1840

Mary P. (1823-????)

Susan (1825-????)

Phebe Ann (29 Apr 1827-12 Feb 1895) — m. Samuel E. Day in Mar 1842

Judah died in 1835, and is buried in Colebrook Village Cemetery, which, despite the cozy-sounding name, is huge, extending over many acres at the northern edge of town. Judah’s stone is one of the earliest, just one row in from the fence fronting Route 3. It’s weathered and difficult to read.

In 1850, Charlotte was living with son Joseph and his family. She died in 1866 and is buried in Colebrook Village Cemetery, although not at the same spot as Judah.

James Luther, Jr. (~1792-1865)

James has his own entry in the family tree.

Giles Luther (1794-1870)

Giles married Mary “Polly” Todd (~1794-4 May 1880) on 11 Feb 1818 in Stewartstown, New Hampshire. Known children:

Giles Thomas, Jr. (20 Oct 1820-5 Feb 1888) — m. Esther A. Wheeler on 10 Nov 1849

Mary Lucinda (31 Dec 1821-11 Jul 1879) — m. Horace Wheeler on 14 Dec 1840

Lydia Lucretia (~1829-3 Jul 1871) — m. Moses P. Merrill

Hannah Rose Ann “Rose” (4 Jan 1832-8 Jun 1910)

Susan Minerva (2 Jan 1835-21 Mar 1895) — m. Alonzo Todd on 29 Jan 1862

The family settled in the Eaton sub-district of Coaticook County (Estrie Region), Quebec, where the 1842 census showed the Jiles (sic) Luther household consisting of 6 people – no names given, but the children present were presumably Giles Jr., Lydia, Rose, and Susan. Giles was a farmer. By the 1851 census, it was just Giles and Mary, both 57. Where was Susan?

Giles died in 1870, age 76, and is buried in Eaton Cemetery. The 1871 census showed Polly, widowed, living with the Ladd family in Eaton. Polly died in 1880 and is buried with Giles.

Samuel Parkhurst Luther (1801-?1878?)

Samuel married Lydia Harlow (26 Jun 1804-18 Jun 1888) on 26 Jul 1827 in Pownal, Vermont. They lived in Hampshire County and Peru, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Children:

John Johnson (5 Jun 1830-????)

Joseph Erastus (13 Jul 1832-29 Jun 1890) — m. Dorcas Marilla Barlow on 9 Oct 1854

Rachel Persis (15 Apr 1834-13 Aug 1912) — m. Moses Neygus on 13 Sep 1853

Samuel Parkhurst (20 Aug 1836-18 Nov 1852)

William W. (Dec 1838-6 Mar 1913) — m. Asenath E. Hill

Mary Reed (28 Nov 1844-27 Jan 1919) — m. Homer Gillette Williams on 12 Oct 1867; m. William Thompson on 19 Aug 1869

Imogene (25 Nov 1850-26 Sep 1883) — m. John T. White on 23 Sep 1874

unnamed girl (9 Nov 1851-????)

In 1878, Samuel set out from Massachusetts to travel to Michigan where his daughter Rachel lived, and was never heard from again. There’s a findagrave.com page for him linked to Oak Grove Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts. Lydia died in 1888 and is buried in the same plot as son Joseph.

Moses Luther (1804-1884)

Moses married Ruth Holden (1806-16 Sep 1849) in 1830, after the birth of their first child. They lived in Canaan. Their children:

Albert (1 Apr 1830-12 Sep 1905) — m. Annette Gould on 21 Aug 1867

Eleanor “Ellen” (3 Jan 1831-3 Nov 1862) — m. William Amy in 184x

Mary Ann (22 Apr 1833-9 Feb 1905) — m. Horace Orcutt on 6 Jul 1851; m. Christopher Heath Bowen on 2 Jun 1866

Amanda (Sep 1834-28 Mar 1857)

Ethan Allen “Allen” (2 Sep 1835-2 Apr 1917) — m. Ellen Luella Hawes in 1865

Electra (20 Jun 1840-9 Feb 1895) — m. John Carr Bowen in 1855

Horace (1841-7 Dec 1866)

Richard (1844-18 Apr 1865)

Bernice (1845-23 Jun 1924) — male, by the way

unnamed infant (1848-1848)

After Ruth’s death in 1849, Moses and family vanished from the records for a time. Son Allen showed up with his uncle James Luther in the 1851 census for Hereford, Quebec, and it appears some of the family were in Middlesex County, Massachusetts in the 1850s. I found a few of them, scattered, in 1860.

In the 1870 and 1880 censuses, Moses was living with the Hinman family in Stratford, Coos County, New Hampshire. He died in 1884. Moses is buried with Ruth in the Morrison-Schoolhouse Cemetery (also called South Canaan Schoolhouse Cemetery), Canaan, Vermont, the same place as his parents. His sons Richard and Horace and his daughter Ellen are buried there as well.

Aaron N. Luther (1807-1843)

Aaron died in 1843. I don’t know whether he married or had children. He’s buried in Crawford Cemetery, Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont, just a few miles north of Lancaster, New Hampshire but on the Vermont side of the river.

Israel Luther, Sr. (1810-1888)

Israel was a Baptist minister and farmer. He married Laura Purdy (29 Oct 1811-5 May 1880) in 1832. They were living in Maine in the 1830s, in New York in the early 1840s, in Ohio by 1850, and by 1860 in Washington Township, Allen County, Indiana, where they remained. They reportedly had seven children, two boys and five girls, but I have just six names:

Dianna W. (1 Aug 1833-????)

Elmira/Almira (2 Apr 1836-????)

Aaron L. (1841-31 Dec 1862)

Israel, Jr. (2 Mar 1844-3 Mar 1912) — m. Rachel Hatfield on 31 Mar 1870

one other girl

Laura (26 Oct 1852-2 Oct 1931) — m. Frank Lawrence Telford on 19 Nov 1871

Eleonora (1856-????) — m. Cecil D. Elliott on 5 Nov 1874

Both of their sons enlisted during the Civil War. Israel, Jr. came back; Aaron died at the Battle of Stones River south of Nashville, Tennessee. Israel died in 1888 and is buried in Eel River Cemetery, Allen County, Indiana.
