William was of Irish descent, born in Quebec. Family accounts variously say he was from Sherbrooke (which at the time meant either a village at the site of the modern city of Sherbrooke or an administrative district around it), from Hatley just south of Sherbrooke, or from Barnston some 20 miles south of Sherbrooke. A Wikitree account says his parents were named Joseph and Sarah. The 1831 census did in fact have a Joseph Johnson family in the Ascott sub-district east of Sherbrooke village, consisting of a couple in their twenties with three children under five, two boys and a girl. A good bet, but there’s no proof. I investigated whether William might be a descendant of the famous William Johnson of colonial New York, who was Irish, and some of whose family moved to Quebec. Answer: no. The famous William did have a great-grandson William Johnson, born in Quebec about 1831, but he was Sir William Johnson and resided in St-Mathias, Rouville, Quebec.
Margaret was reportedly the daughter of one Thomas Davis (~1805-????), about whom I know almost nothing. Most accounts have her born in Ireland, and one said she came across the ocean in 1851. She seems to have had some early connection to Stratford, Coos County, New Hampshire.
In the 1850 census for New Hampshire and the 1851 census for Quebec, I can’t find either William or Margaret with any confidence. Certainly no one of the right name and approximate age paired with the expected parents. A large Davis family from Ireland, headed by a Thomas (age 48), was living in Dereham, Oxford County west of Toronto in the 1851 census (see “Two Families That Might Have Been Margaret’s” at the bottom of this page), but there was no daughter Margaret.
I don’t know where or when William and Margaret met, although one family story says Toronto, which does seem likely. They probably married about 1855. They appear together in the 1861 census for Ellice Township, Perth County, Ontario, a hundred or so miles west of Toronto: William (31, farmer, born in Lower Canada, meaning what is now southern Quebec) and Margaret (22, born in Ireland), with children John (4), William (2), and Thomas (1). Religion was C.S. = Church of Scotland.
I think the Ontario farm failed in the early 1860s. A lot of farm families left Ontario in the 1850s, many of them heading due west in Michigan. Was there a drought or something?
By the time of the 1871 census, the family had moved more than 500 miles back east to Hereford, Compton District, Quebec, 20-odd miles from where William was probably born and just across the border from Vermont: William (41, farmer) and Margaret (35, born in Ireland), with children Ezra (13), William (12), Thomas (10), Joseph (8), Sarah (6), George (2), and Elizabeth (infant). Religion was Church of England. Probably they had moved in 1863, since the four oldest boys were listed as born in Ontario, while Sarah, George, and Elizabeth were born in Quebec. They were living just one census page away from the Israel Luther family, and several pages away from the family of a John Johnson (35), who might be a relative.
In 1881, they were still in Hereford, Quebec: William (50, farmer, born in Canada of Irish descent) and Margaret (43, born in Ireland), with children John (23), William (22), Thomas (19), Joseph (18), George (12), Elizabeth (11), Mary (8), and Walter (7). Sarah had married the year before and was living two census pages away with her husband, and Carrie had died.
I can’t find William and Margaret in 1890-1891, although two of their married children were living in Hereford. Given that daughter Lucy later said she came to the US in 1891, her parents might have moved before the census. William died in 1896, and is buried in the All Saints Anglican Cemetery in Hereford, Stanstead County, Quebec.
In 1900, Margaret was living with daughter Elizabeth and her family in Bath, Grafton County, New Hampshire. By 1910, the family had moved to Lisbon, Grafton County, New Hampshire, and Margaret was still with them.
Sometime after 1910, Elizabeth and family moved away to Manchester, New Hampshire. Margaret apparently didn’t go with them. The 1920 census showed Margaret (82) living with daughter Lucy and her husband William Fuller in Stratford, New Hampshire.
Margaret died in Stratford in 1922. The death notice said she was born on 19 Aug 1837 (could be) in Toronto (doubt it) and had lived in Stratford for 20 years (false). It claimed her parents were both from Scotland rather than Ireland (first time I’ve heard that one, but possible), but also said she suffered from senility, so it’s all a bit shaky. Margaret is buried with William and their children Carrie and George in the All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Hereford, Stanstead County, Quebec.
John was born in southwestern Ontario. His family moved to Hereford, Quebec in the early 1860s. He married Emma Stevens (Jun 1851-6 Jul 1902) from New Hampshire on 21 Jun 1884 in Canaan, Vermont. The wedding record notes he was born in Canada and lived in Hereford, Quebec. They moved to New Hampshire in the late 1880s, where the 1900 census found them in Clarkstown/Stewartstown, Coos County. Their children:
William (22 Jan 1885-????)
Electa Cynthia (14 Aug 1886-1 May 1917) — m. Oscar Leslie Nutting by common law; m. Prentiss Lee Dodge on 4 Jul 1913
Jesse Melrose (30 Oct 1889-22 Nov 1972) — m. Della May Bundy Farnham on 16 Oct 1914; m. Gertrude May Jackson Hastings on 11 Aug 1941; m. Marion E. Hastings on 3 Apr 1942
Carrie Belle (15 Mar 1892-24 Jun 1975) — m. Sherman A. Farnham, Jr. on 18 Jun 1910; m. Sherman A. Farnham, Sr. on 15 Jun 1926
Arthur E. (May 1895-19xx)
Emma was still alive in the 1900 census, despite her findagrave.com page claiming she died in 1893. She died in 1902. John died of typhoid pneumonia in 1907 in West Stewartstown, New Hampshire, the same town where his late brother Thomas had died. His death record says that his father was born in Hatley, Quebec, which is south of Sherbrooke and northwest of Barnston, and that his mother was born in Stratford, Quebec, which contradicts other evidence. It says John himself was born in Owen Sound, PO, which is in Grey County, Ontario (PO = Province of Ontario). I have no other record of his family having lived there, but maybe that was before they acquired the farm in Perth County. John is buried with Emma and some of his kin in the Alice Hunt Cemetery, Canaan, as John E. Johnson.
If I’m understanding the record correctly, John’s daughter Carrie in 1910 married a man named Sherman Farnham who changed his name to Mignault, and then in 1926 Carrie married his father. Meanwhile, the first husband moved to Connecticut and married a younger woman. There was a story here. As if trying to top that piece of Jerry Springer theater, Jesse’s third marriage was to his step-daughter, less than a month after the death of her mother/his previous wife. The youngest child, Arthur, was in 1910 working as a servant to the Knights family in Clarksville, Coos County, but I can’t trace him after that. The Arthur E. Johnson of about the same age who married Christine Shallon in 1918 in Pittsburg, Coos County was someone else.
Eliza died in infancy. No details.
William, Jr. was born in Ellice Township, Perth County, Ontario. He married Caroline Melissa “Carrie” Hall on 3 Nov 1887 in Colebrook, New Hampshire – the same date and place as his brother Thomas’s marriage to Hannah Lawton. (According to their gravestones, William and Thomas were born exactly nine months apart, giving credence to the old joke about Irish twins.) He was living at the time in Hereford, Quebec, and working as a cook. Known children:
Bessie Helena (5 Jun 1889-19 Jun 1979) — m. Linley Glenn Taylor on 7 Jun 1916
Wilbur Allen (27 Oct 1890-23 Jul 1911)
Charles Henry (11 Sep 1892-Oct 1965) — m. Claudia B. Quimby on 25 Aug 1915; m. Mabel Louise Mosley on 4 Sep 1943
Rollin George (~Dec 1897-10 Jan 1902)
Lila Marion (24 Apr 1904-7 Aug 1992) — m. Richard Lorenzo Mears on 22 Mar 1924; m. George Wilbur Simpson
The 1891 census showed the family in Hereford, living on the Hall family farm. They moved to New Hampshire in 1895, living at first in West Stewartstown where William’s older brother John and twin brother Thomas lived. William became a railway cook in the early 1900s, probably around the time the family moved to Lancaster, Coos County.
The 1910 census showed the family in Lancaster. William died there of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1917. The death record noted he had lived there for 15 years. It listed his father as born in “Barnstead PQ” (meaning Barnston, Province of Quebec) and his mother in Ireland. He’s buried in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster, Coos County, New Hampshire.
Thomas, born in Perth County, Ontario, was a farmer. He married Hannah M. Lawton/Laughton (1864-11 Sep 1935) from Vermont on 3 Nov 1887 in Colebrook, New Hampshire (record actually says Vermont) in an apparent double wedding with his brother William and bride. The wedding record said Thomas was living at the time in Hereford, Quebec, and that he was born in Stratford (Ontario), which is near Ellice Township where his family had a farm. He and Hannah had two sons, both born in Canada, before moving to New Hampshire:
Mellie W. (Apr 1889-19xx)
Herbert A. (Nov 1892-19xx)
Thomas died of typhoid fever in 1898 in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, near Stewartstown. His death record said his father was born in Barnston, PQ (Quebec). He’s buried in Alice Hunt Cemetery, Canaan, Vermont.
In 1900, the census showed his family in Belknap County, New Hampshire. In 1915, Hannah married a widower named Edward Horatio Burdett (1849-1929) in Massachusetts. In 1920 she and Edward were living in Merrimack, New Hampshire, but the kids were nowhere in sight, and I can’t trace them. Hannah died in 1935 and is buried with Thomas.
Joseph, born in Ontario, was a farmer. He married Susan Alma Schoff Farnham (1855-1941) from New Hampshire on 16 May 1888 in Vermont. The wedding record said he was born in Toronto and was a resident of Hereford, Quebec. Susan came with a son named Archie Farnham from a previous marriage, but she had no children with Joseph. The family moved to Canaan, Vermont, where census records showed them from 1900 to 1940. There’s a Vermont naturalization record for Joseph from 1902.
Joseph died in Canaan in 1944, three years after Susan. They’re buried together in Canaan Village Cemetery. The reporting party for his death certificate didn’t know where Joseph’s parents were born, but said Joseph himself was born in Toronto, which agrees with the wedding record.
Sarah Ann has her own entry in the family tree.
Carrie died when she was less than two years old. She’s buried with her parents in the All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Hereford, Stanstead County, Quebec.
George died at age 21, cause unknown. He’s buried with his parents and sister Carrie in the All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Hereford, Stanstead County, Quebec.
Elizabeth married Fred Adelbert Andrews (10 Sep 1864-6 Mar 1942) in 1889, probably in Canada. Fred was the son of English immigrants Burnett Andrews and Fanny Clark, and variously claimed to be from Canada, New Hampshire, and Vermont. They apparently had just two children:
Ella Frances “Nellie” (8 Mar 1890-Apr 1973) — m. Charles Brock Darling (1891-1936) on 10 Feb 1915
Clifford T. (18 Feb 1900-Nov 1974) — apparently did not marry
Their daughter Ella was born in Canada. They moved to the US anywhere betwen 1890 and 1900 – dates vary. Son Clifford was born in Bath, New Hampshire. In 1900, the family, listed as “Androis”, were living in Bath: Fred (36), Elizabeth (30), Nellie (11), and Clifford T. (0). Elizabeth’s mother Margaret (64, born in Ireland) was with them.
In 1910, the family, now Andrews, were living in Lisbon, New Hampshire: Fred (45) and Elizabeth (39) with children Ella F. (20) and Clifford T. (10), plus her mother Margaret Johnson (74, now supposedly born in Canada). The 1920 census showed Fred (52), Elisabeth (49), and Clifford (19) living in Manchester, New Hampshire – 430 South Main Street, I think.
Nellie and her husband lived in Ryegate, Vermont, where he died and was buried in 1936. I think Fred and Elizabeth moved to Ryegate to join Nellie in the late 1930s. In the 1940 census, Elizabeth (70) and Fred (75) were living with Nellie and two of her sons at 150 Elm Street, Montpelier, Vermont. Fred died in 1942 in Montpelier. Elizabeth died just a few months later.
Nellie died in 1973, and is buried with Charles in the Hillside Cemetery, South Ryegate, Vermont.
Lucy, who must have been the child listed as Mary in the 1881 census, was born in Hereford, Quebec. She reportedly came to the US in 1891, with or without her family, although note that it was a very short trip. She married William A. “Willie” Fuller (13 Apr 1868-19 Jan 1944) of Coos County, New Hampshire on 24 Jul 1892 in Vermont. They had no children I know of. The 1900 census showed them, ages 32 and 28, in Clarksville, Coos County. They had two servants and two boarders.
They later moved south down the river to Stratford, New Hampshire, where the 1920 census showed Lucy’s widowed mother living with them. Lucy died there in 1935 of cerebral apoplexy, and is buried in the Colebrook Village Cemetery, Colebrook, New Hampshire. Willie died in 1944 and is buried with her.
Walter married Jennie M. Fuller (1868-1949) of Stewartstown, New Hampshire in Canaan, Vermont on 18 Mar 1896. Willie’s sister? Walter was listed at the time as a millwright, born in Hereford, Quebec and living in Canaan. The 1900 census showed him as a laborer at the boarding house run by his sister’s brother-in-law Burleigh Luther in Canaan, Essex County, but also showed him living with Jennie and the family in Bloomfield, Essex County. He and Jennie had at least six children born in either Bloomfield or Canaan:
Fordyce Frank (15 Jul 1897-1956) — never married
Harry Walter (31 May 1900-16 Aug 1959) — m. Annie Melissa Roby on 11 Aug 1922
Margaret L. (21 Aug 1902-7 May 1986) — never married
Mabel Fuller (25 Jun 1904-6 Mar 2005) — never marrried
Syrena Morrill (12 Aug 1906-9 Jan 1996) — m. Anthony James Faretta on 19 Jul 1943
Edward (1 Nov 1908-after 1930)
Walter died of diabetes complications in 1911 in Bloomfield, and is buried in Alice Hunt Cemetery, Canaan, Vermont, where at least two of his siblings are also buried. His death record says his father was from Lenoxville PQ (Quebec), mother from Ireland. His family moved to Lynn, Massachusetts, where the 1930 census showed Jennie with four of the children – Fordyce, Margaret, Mabel, and Edward – still at home, and Syrena in a boarding house. Jennie died in 1949 and is buried with Walter.
Daughter Syrena was a public school teacher in Essex County before her 1943 marriage, and possibly after. The 1950 census for Lynn, Massachusetts showed Margaret, an elementary school teacher, heading a household consisting of herself, brother Frank (a hospital janitor), and sister Mabel (also a teacher), all unmarried. Frank died in 1956, and is buried back in Canaan with his parents. Margaret and Mabel died in 1986 and 2005 respectively. Their ashes are interred in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody, Essex County, Massachusetts.

James (~1845-????)
Ann Julia (~1848-????)
Ellen (~1849-????)
John (~1854-????)
This Irish couple came to Canada in the 1840s. In 1851 they were Roman Catholic and living in Dereham, Oxford County, Ontario, a bit west of Toronto. By 1861, they were Church of England, living just a bit further northeast in Stephen, Huron County, Ontario. They told the 1861 census that their sons William and Michael were living in the US and their daughter Sarah in Stratford – presumably the one just east of Huron County, not the one in New Hampshire. I find no trace of them in 1871.
Joseph (~1838-????)
Thomas, Jr. (~1840-????)
George B. (~1843-????)
In 1861 this Irish-born couple were living in Leeds, Ontario (north of where Lake Ontario flows into the St. Lawrence). They were Church of England, except for Eliza. Their sons were all listed as born in Canada. It appears Thomas was still there 10 years later.
