Charles (7 May 1851-11 Feb 1876)
Nathaniel was born in New Hampshire, the son of Nathaniel Hill II and Hannah Moore. He grew up in Loudon, Merrimack County (at the time part of Rockingham County), New Hampshire. His family moved to Exeter, Penobscot County, Maine in early 1810.
Eliza was born in or near Bangor, Maine. She was the daughter of Levi Stevens from New Hampshire and Mary “Polly” Mann from Ellsworth, Maine. Her mother died between 1811 and 1814. Her father remarried in 1815 to Hannah Mann, who was probably her mother’s sister. The family remained in Exeter. Eliza’s father died between 1822 and 1830.
Nathaniel and Eliza married on 11 Apr 1829 in Exeter. (The marriage record doesn’t give their first names, but everything else fits.) According to his son Chester, Nathaniel was a carpenter. The 1830 census recorded them in Exeter living next door to Nathaniel’s parents. The 1840 census listed the family as a man in his forties, a woman in her thirties, and four children under 10: two boys and two girls. That would be Nathaniel IV, Hannah, Eliza, and Chester.
In the 1850 census, Nathaniel’s parents were living with them. His father, Nathaniel II, died the following year.
The 1860 census showed the family with six children still at home.
In the 1860s, Nathaniel and Eliza moved to Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County, Maine, joined by some of their children. The 1870 census showed them there with just Charles still at home.
Nathaniel died in 1879. He is buried in Crowell Cemetery, Exeter Center, Penobscot County, the same place as his parents. In 1880, Eliza was living with daughter Hannah and her family in Corinna, Penobscot County.
Eliza died in Corinna in 1893, and is buried with Nathaniel. Daughter Hannah was later buried in Crowell Cemetery as well.
Nathaniel was a carpenter. He never married, as far as I can tell. In 1880 and again in 1900, the census showed him living in Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County, Maine with the family of his brother Archelaus. He must have returned to Penobscot County after Archelaus died. The 1910 census showed him living with sister Hannah and her husband in Stetson, Penobscot County. He died there in 1917, of “senile edema” of the lungs. There is no record of his burial.
Note that there was another Nathaniel Hill of about the same age who lived in Naples, Cumberland County.
Hannah’s first husband was Charles Wesley Leighton (15 Feb 1831-9 May 1875), whom she married in 1852. They lived in Corinna, Penobscot County. They had four children, but lost three of them to what was likely a severe outbreak of disease in late spring of 1862:
Charles Frank (14 Jul 1853-3 Jun 1862)
Leslie Morse (6 Oct 1855-16 Jun 1862)
Flora E. (24 Feb 1858-28 May 1862)
Angie (17 Oct 1866-1943) — m. Charles Melville Griffin on 27 May 1889
Charles died in 1875. The following year, Hannah married Ivory M. Barker (27 Jul 1838-7 Jan 1919), whose first wife, Sarah L. Brown, had also died in 1875. Hannah and Ivory moved to Stetson, Penobscot County. They had no children together. By the 1880 census, Hannah’s mother was staying with them, as well as daughter Angie and two of younger sister Cordelia’s children.
In the 1910 census, which turned her into “Anna Barber”, Hannah’s older brother Nathaniel was staying with them. Hannah died in 1918 and is buried in Crowell Cemetery, Exeter Center with Charles and the children. Her obituary was published in The Herald of Life on 4 Apr 1918.
Eliza married Quebec-born Luke Turgeon (21 Oct 1831-4 May 1883) in the early 1850s. Their children:
John F. (14 Dec 1856-17 Sep 1882)
Jennie L. (Feb 1858-1939) — m. Walter Oakes Raynes about 1892
Albert E. (Jun 1860-1928) — m. Annie May Scott on 21 Jan 1890
Charles Leslie (21 Aug 1864-31 Oct 1952) — m. Eva Sabin Simons on 1 Oct 1890
Frank H. (2 Apr 1866-1936) — m. Zepha D. Bean on 11 or 12 Oct 1892
George Vernon (1 Dec 1868-1929) — m. Lephy Gertrude Atwood on 18 Jun 1894
Henry Wallace “Harry” (2 Nov 1871-1 May 1894)
They must have been in Canada during part of the Civil War, since son Charles was listed as born there. The 1880 census showed them in Auburn, Androscoggin County. Luke died in 1883, a year after their son John.
By 1900, Eliza was living with her nephew Asa Stevens back in Exeter. In 1910, she was with her married daughter Jennie in Rumford, Oxford County. She died there in 1918, and is buried with Luke and some of their children in Oak Hill Cemetery, Auburn.
Chester has his own entry in the family tree.
Archelaus married Abbie J. Foss (1 May 1846-27 Jan 1916) from Massachusetts in 1864. By 1870, they had settled in Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County, Maine, where they remained. Archelaus was a farmer and mechanic. Their children:
Effie Foss (31 Jul 1867-7 Feb 1878)
Irvin (5 Jun 1869-1935) — m. Louise J. Henry on 17 May 1897
Ruth (25 Dec 1870-11 Mar 1962) — m. Charles S. Smith in 1891
Elizabeth “Lizzie” (1875-????)
Charles Edwin (31 May 1881-18 or 28 Dec 1936) — m. Fern Lenora Johnston on 1 Jan 1906
From the census data, Archelaus’s unmarried older brother Nathaniel appears to have stayed with them for at least twenty years.
In the 1900 census, Archelaus listed himself as a carpenter. Abbie said she was the mother of four children, all living, which appears to mean Lizzie was still alive and Effie had been, ahhh, forgotten. Sone Charles was the only child still at home. Archelaus’s brother Nathaniel was still there as well.
Archelaus died in 1904, and Abbie in 1916. They’re buried together in Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County.
Martha married George Pembroke Leighton (12 Jun 1837-10 Sep 1883), nephew of her sister Hannah’s husband, in 1860. Like others of the family, they settled in Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County. They had nine children:
Euric Leon (12 Oct 1861-1933) — m. Emma Blanche Brown on 27 Jul 1893; m. Exilda Isadora Rainville Langlois on 12 Nov 1902
Hattie F. (1864-19xx) — m. Charles N. Bard on 23 Oct 1882
Aldred C. (17 Jul 1867-18 Jul 1943) — m. Etta May Patten about 1890
Mildred May “Millie” (Sep 1870-19xx) — m. Joseph H. McGrotty
George, Jr. (Mar ?1872?-10 Apr 1943) — m. Lydia J. Gitchell on 14 Sep 1892
Harry C. (Jul 1874-1951) — m. Josephine Ann “Josie” Patten on 24 Jan 1894
Willis Sheldon (24 Apr 1876-Jan 1945) — m. Nettie Crichton on 27 Jun 1900; m. Florence Bell Whitmore about 1908
Nina (9 Mar 1878-1939) — m. William Austin Waterman on 26 Nov 1902; m. Charles Walter Ridlon on 10 Jan 1911
Edward G. (1880-7 Mar 1949) — m. Irene Blair on 5 Feb 1902
The 1870 census showed them in Fort Fairfield with children Eunie (Euric, 8), Hattie (6), Aldred (3), and Millie (9 months), plus a shingle mill worker from New Brunswick named Henry Cox. In 1880 it was Eunie (18), Hattie (16), Aldred (12), Milla (10), “Sergice” (George, 8), “Ham’l” (Harry, 6), Willis (4), and Nina (2). Also present was Hattie’s future husband Charles N. Bard (23). George died in 1883, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield.
In 1900, Martha was living in Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts with Nina and Edward, plus married daughter Millie and her Canadian husband and son. She claimed nine children, all living. The 1910 census found Martha living alone in Old Orchard Beach, York County, but also with daughter Nina in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts. She again reported all nine children still living. She died in 1911 in Saco, York County, and is buried with George.
Edward died in 1851.
Cordelia joined the moved to Aroostook County, where she married Edward Coffin Varney (Feb 1846-31 Dec 1879) in 1867. Known children:
Percy P. (1868-????)
Charles Remington (19 Oct 1869-17 Dec 1943) — m. Blanche Jane Cole on 19 Aug 1891; m. Mae Alice Berryman on 18 Dec 1895
Annie W. (1873-????) — m. Leslie W. Ordway on 20 Sep 1894
George Franklin (27 Jul 1876-19 Nov 1973) — m. Elizabeth “Lizzie” McIntyre on 14 Mar 1900
Lillian Avis “Lilla” (Oct 1877-28 Jan 1960) — m. Albion R. Dearborn on 27 Jul 1897; m. Calvin Bruce Bishop on 20 Apr 1907; m. Elmer James Elliott on 15 May 1915
Charles died in 1879, and is buried in Fort Fairfield. In 1880, Cordelia’s children Charles and Frank were living with their aunt Hannah and family in Corinna, Penobscot County. I don’t know where Cordelia was. In 1886, she married the much older widower James Parker Copeland (1823-1886) of Corinna. James didn’t survive even to the end of the year, but still they had one child:
Carrie A. (~1886-19xx) — m. ??? Morey in 1906; m. Clarence Albert Cilley on 30 May 1912; divorced by 1916
In 1900, Cordelia was living alone in Exeter as Cordelia Copeland. In 1910, the census showed Cordelia in both Exeter, Penobscot County and Houlton, Aroostook County with daughter Carrie Copeland Morey (23 or 24), Carrie’s son Morris/Maurice Morey (3 or 4), and Lilla’s daughter Avis Dearborn (11 or 12). In 1930, she was living in Portland, head of a household that included two grandchildren and a great-grand-daughter. No trace of her after that.
Charles died in 1876, unmarried as far as I know, although there’s a grave next to his marked “G. E. H.”. He’s buried in Houghton Burial Ground, Fort Fairfield.
