John R. Toothaker was the son of Abner Toothaker and his wife Phebe Wilbur, of Rangeley or Phillips, Maine. John’s middle name, Raymond, was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother Deborah Raymond.

Esther was the daughter of Joseph Hoar and Hannah Brackett of Rangeley.

In the 1860 census for Rangeley, John, 20, was living with his parents Abner (45) and Phebe (39). Siblings present were Mary A. (16), Mile Ann (14), Julia (10), and Clara L. (7). Grandmother Deborah Raymond Toothaker, 87, was there as well, and a boy named Charles Heath, age 8.

Also in 1860 Rangeley, Esther, 18, was living with her parents Joseph (57) and Hannah (59); siblings Luther (22), Nathaniel B. (19), James H. (16), and Lois E. (14); and 7-month-old son “Lyman L. Hoar”.

Yes, John and Esther’s first child, our ancestor Ermon, was born in 1859, but John and Esther didn’t marry until 29 Nov 1860, more than a year later. Well, it happens.

In the 1870 census for Rangeley, J. R. Toothaker (30) and wife Esther A. (29) had children Ermon L. (10), Minnie E. (6), and Lincoln A. (1). They also had Charles H. Toothaker (18), who must have been 1860’s Charles Heath. I guess John and Esther adopted him, or maybe Abner and Phebe did. They also had a couple named Zari (29) and Anne (27) Parker living there as farm hands. Hannah Abbott Hoar, eldest sister of Verna and Luella Abbott, was living next door with her family.

The 1880 census for Rangeley listed R. Toothaker (40), farmer; wife Esther M. (38); children Ermon L. (20), Minnie E. (16), Lincoln A. (11), Archie R. (8), and Rolla (2); and George Pillsbury (24), Minnie’s future husband.

The 1900 census for Rangeley had John (61), Esther (59), son Rolla (22), and grand-daughter Mary E. Pillsbury (17), plus a servant named Ida Tomlinson (30). Mary, aka Esther, was the daughter of Minnie E. Toothaker and George Pillsbury. I suppose their house was crowded, what with having 13 kids, so maybe they loaned her out to the grandparents to make room.

John died in 1906, Esther in 1911. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley.

Ermon Lindley Toothaker (1859-1925)

Martha (17 Sep 1910-17 Nov 1992) — m. Millet Charles Perkins

The 1900 census showed them with 10 children already, Vern through Dan, which says to me that the census was running late. For many years, they lived at a large farm called Buena Vista before moving to a home on Kennebago Road, Rangeley about 1924. In 1930, their widowed children Vern and Lena were living with them, along with a few adult grandchildren. Daughter Lulene, per a 1930 letter by her cousin Lyn Toothaker (Ermon’s son), was the national secretary of the YWCA and lived in Ohio. George died in 1936 after several years of poor health, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley along with son Phillip. Minnie died in 1949 and is buried with them.

Bertha E. “Bertie” Toothaker (1867-1867)

Bertie died as an infant, and is buried in Schoolhouse Cemetery, Rangeley.

Lincoln Abner Toothaker (1869-1945)

Lincoln married Idella E. Keith (1870-1958) on 4 Jul 1890. They lived in Chesterville, Franklin County, Maine. They had three children I know of:

Ruby Evelyn (1891-1973) — m. Percy K. Ellis on 7 Jul 1923

Shirlie Leone (10 May 1893-17 Jan 1975) — m. Ruel A. Hamilton in 1929

Van Wilder (20 Jun 1895-21 May 1974) — m. Methyl A. Fuller in 1918

In 1940, Lincoln was living with his married daughter Shirlie in Chesterville and I can’t find Idella. Don’t know what that was about. They died in 1945 and 1958 respectively, and are buried in Webster Cemetery, Chesterville.

Archie R. Toothaker (1872-1928)

Archie married Addie Lamb (1874-1926). They lived at first in Rangeley. Their children:

Coe Edward (7 Apr 1892-26 Apr 1954) — m. Lois L. Nile on 3 Jun 1913

Merle D. (8 Dec 1903-23 Feb 1950) — m. Clarice Hazel Farnum Myers on 7 Nov 1925

Madelane Esther (29 Aug 1905-26 Jun 1986) — m. Calbert Clifford Mosher on 19 Nov 1921; m. Eugene A. Holt on 1 Jul 1944

John Raymond (14 Sep 1907-9 Jul 1969) — m. Elvie A. Dunham on 1 May 1937

Lamont Archie (5 Jul 1909-1 Mar 1988) — m. Ruth M. Clemens on 13 Nov 1937

Gerold E. (4 Nov 1911-1978) — m. Ruth L. Kennedy on 19 Jul 1930

Methyl R. (20 Jul 1914-19xx) — m. Eugene A. Holt on 24 Sep 1931; m. Arthur S. Walker on 18 Dec 1945

The youngest, Methyl, was born in Avon, Franklin County. By 1920 they were living in Strong. Addie died in 1926, and Archie in 1928. They are buried in Chesterville Hill Cemetery, Chesterville, Franklin County. The 1930 census showed the two youngest living with their married sister Madelane in Chesterville.

Lois Elsie Toothaker (1874-1874)

Like her older sister Bertie seven years before, Lois died in infancy. She is buried with Bertie in Schoolhouse Cemetery, Rangeley.

Rolla Virgil Toothaker (1878-1944)

Rolla married Gertrude Amy Ross (25 Apr 1878-17 Apr 1960) in 1903. He was a farmer. They lived at first in Rangeley, moving to Jay after 1910. Children:

Ina Evelyn (9 Oct 1905-26 Dec 1961) — m. Ray L. Robinson in 1928

Abner Abraham (4 Jan 1908-1990) — m. Geneva Robinson on 18 Jun 1931
