Susan Myrick (27 Nov 1840-16 Jun 1913) — m. William Crocker Pike on 23 Dec 1861

Sarah Jane (2 Jun 1844-10 Feb 1909) — m. Ezra Turner Delano on 15 Feb 1861

Daniel was born in Ireland. His findagrave.com page claims he was born 15 Oct 1800 in Bantry, County Cork, but his death record suggests he was born about 1796. His parents are unknown. He might have been related to the Captain Daniel Sullivan who commanded a force holding Castine, Maine against the British during the American Revolution, but that’s speculation.

Sarah was born in Castine, Hancock County, Maine to Ephraim Murch and Rebecca Cobb.

Daniel and Sarah married on 23 Aug 1821 in Castine.

The 1840 census listed Daniel and family living in Castine. The children consisted of one boy younger than 5 (that would be John) and two girls between 5 and 10 (presumably Caroline and Hannah). Where were the older children? Apprenticed out? Maybe they were living with Sarah’s parents, who had two unnamed younger people in their household.

Daniel died at sea in 1850 on the barque Ellen Noyse, sailing between New Orleans and Boston. Cause was either dysentery per the death record, or yellow fever per findagrave.com. He was buried at sea. The census for Castine that year, compiled by someone with beautiful handwriting, listed the family without him: Sarah (46) and her children Daniel (27), Hannah (16), Susan (9), and Sarah (5). There was a John Sullivan (14) living with a farm family named Hatch in Castine – that was probably son John.

In the 1860 census, Sarah (59) was living in Castine with her son Ephraim Sullivan (36, farmer), his wife Nancy S. (35), and their daughter Lizzy A. (2).

In 1861, Sarah remarried to Hatsuld Knowles Delano (27 Mar 1794-Aug 1875) from Hampden, Maine. Her burial record and tombstone name him as Ezra Delano, but other records variously call him Hatsuld, Hatsell, or Hatcil Knowles Delano. He had been married to Ruth Gray, with whom he had at least six children born between 1812 and 1839.

The 1870 census listed Hatsell (77) and Sarah (67) Delano living in Alton, Penobscot County, Maine, north of Bangor. Hatsell, despite his age, was recorded as a farm laborer.

Hatsuld died in 1875. In the 1880 census, Sarah was living with her married daughter Sarah Jr. in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland County, Maine. She apparently then went to live with or at least visit her married daughter Susan in Newburyport, Massachusetts, since she died there in 1882. She is buried as Sarah Murch Delano in Castine Cemetery.

Children

Daniel Sullivan, Jr. (1822-1860)

Daniel, the eldest child, was a blacksmith. There is no record of him marrying or having children. In 1860 he was staying with his married sister Mary Ann Sullivan Hodsdon in Castine. Maybe he was ill? He died later the same year, cause unknown, and is buried in Castine Cemetery.

Ephraim Murch Sullivan, Sr. (1824-1904)

Ephraim married Nancy Snow Hill (17 Dec 1825-187x) in 1856. They lived in Castine. Ephraim was a farmer. He and Nancy had one child:

Lizzy Annie (7 Jun 1858-????)

In the 1860 census, Ephraim’s mother Sarah was living with them. I don’t know when Nancy died, but on 19 Dec 1877 Ephraim married again, to Annice Dodge in Mars Hill, Aroostook County – supposedly the same town Nancy came from, although the records might be wrong about that. They lived in Prospect, Waldo County, but by 1885 at the latest had settled in Bucksport, Hancock County. Their children were:

Cordelia (1879-????) — m. Thomas Bagley in 1912

William Leslie (27 Mar 1880-????) — m. Laura Gross in 1916

Mary Alnah (14 Mar 1885-????)

Ephraim, Jr. (27 Jul 1893-????) — m. ?? Roix in 1906

In 1900, Ephraim (76) was living in Bucksport with wife Annie (50) and children William L. (20), Mary A. (15), and Ephraim Jr. (7). Ephraim died in 1904. He is buried with Annice in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Bucksport.

Mary Ann Sullivan (1827-1863)

Mary Ann married Captain John Condon (8 Mar 1825-10 Jan 1853) of Brooksville, Hancock County on 20 or 24 Sep 1843. They had four children:

Eleanor Amanda “Ellen” (25 Jan 1844-1863)

Charles H. (26 Apr 1847-1863)

John Jr. (15 Aug 1850-????) — prob. m. Annie E. Young in Jul 1870

Frank (~1851-????)

John died at the beginning of 1853 in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Two years later, on 10 Feb 1855, Mary Ann married widower Horatio E. Hodson (24 Mar 1817-Aug 1875), combining their families. She and Horatio had three more children. See the Hodsdon-Sullivan page for their details. For some reason, in 1860 her presumed son Frank was living with his aunt Hannah in Machias Port, Maine. Mary Ann died in 1863, as did her children Ellen and Charles, cause unknown. All three are buried in Castine Cemetery.

Ellen Sullivan (1829-1895)

Ellen married farmer Benjamin T. Whitehouse (1 Jan 1821-22 Feb 1902) on 17 Dec 1848 in Castine. Known children:

Ralph Chaney (1849-22 Nov 1913)

Annette (1851-????) — m. Charles W. Kimball

Emma Jane (1858-1885) — m. Oscar Lucius Bashford on 1 Jul 1883

Fred Murch (26 Apr 1868-12 May 1922) — m. Edith Eudora Armstrong

They lived at first in Liberty, Waldo County, where son Ralph was born. By 1860 they had settled in Mars Hill, Aroostook County. There they remained. Emma and Fred were still with them in 1880. Ellen died in 1895, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County. Benjamin died seven years later, and is buried with her.

Eleanor Sullivan (1830-1869)

No information except her 1830 birth record. Even her year of death is an unsourced claim. She was probably the same person as Ellen.

Caroline Elisabeth Sullivan (1832-1850)

Caroline died of consumption at age 18. She’s buried in Castine Cemetery.

Hannah Sullivan (1834-1869)

Hannah has her own entry in the family tree.

John Sullivan (1836-????)

No information. Common name.

Susan Myrick Sullivan (1840-1913)

Susan married William Crocker Pike (1835-1902) on 23 Dec 1861 in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts. The couple settled there. Children included:

Ellen Condon “Nellie” (10 May 1866-4 May 1937) — m. Albert K. Cheney on 18 Oct 1888

Willard Samuel (22 Feb 1868-19 May 1940) — m. Alice G. Porter on 25 Sep 1890

Mary Dunyon (10 Jun 1869-22 Mar 1952) — m. John Elliott

I think Susan’s mother Sarah was staying with them when she died in 1882, but can’t find any documentation for that. Susan herself died in 1913, and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Newburyport, as are her husband and children.

Sarah Jane Sullivan (1844-1909)

Sarah married Ezra Turner Delano (17 Mar 1839-27 Mar 1914) on 15 Feb 1861 on Verona Island, Hancock County, some ten miles up the Penobscot River from Castine. He was a son of Hatsuld K. Delano, the man her mother married that same year. Their children:

Willie (1861-186x)

Susie (1863-186x)

Ezra Edwin (21 Sep 1865-28 Apr 1886)

They remained on Verona Island at least until 1865. By 1870, they were living in Bucksport, Hancock County with 4-year-old son Ezra. The 1880 census found them in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland County, Maine; Sarah’s widowed mother was living with them. In the early to mid-1880s, they moved to Michigan, where son Ezra died. In the 1900 census, they were in Turner & Whitney Townships, Arenac County, Michigan, the same area where Sarah’s nephew Charles Hodsdon was living at the time. Sarah died in 1909, and is buried in Sims-Whitney Cemetery, Au Gres, Arenac County. Ezra returned to Maine. In 1910, he was living with his widowed sister Ruth Blair in Orrington, Penobscot County. He died in 1914.

Grandchildren

John Condon, Jr. (1850-????)

Mary Ann’s son John became a sailor. The 1870 census listed him living with his stepfather in Castine and also with his Aunt Susan in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The John Wesley Condon who registered an intent to marry Annie E. Young in Jul 1870 in Castine was probably him. I don’t know what happened to him after that. “John Condon” was a common name, and even “John Condon, son of John and Mary Condon” is not as specific as one might hope. The John Condon, Jr. who married Mary Sullivan in 1884 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts was not him, despite the coincidence of his and his parents’s names; that man was born in 1857 in Massachusetts, and his mother’s maiden name was McCarthy.

Frank Condon (~1851-????)

Mary Ann’s son Frank was living with his aunt Hannah in Machias Port, Maine in the 1860 census. Can’t find him after that.

Pure Speculation

Daniel might have been related to the Captain Daniel Sullivan who fought the British in the American Revolution, commanding a force that defended Castine. The British captured him in a surprise raid, and burned his house down. He died a prisoner after refusing to swear loyalty to the king of England. He was the brother of General John Sullivan, a Continental Army commander from New Hampshire and later, briefly, a member of the Continental Congress.
