Stephen was born in Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine to David Lufkin (~1765-185x) from Massachusetts and wife Hannah. That’s according to a reconstructed birth record. Another source claims Stephen was from Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, and he did claim in 1850 to be from New Hampshire, a claim repeated by at least one child. Don’t know which account is right.

Polly was from New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine, fourth of a claimed 13 children to Josiah Stinchfield (17 Oct 1763-24 Nov 1825) from New Gloucester and Molly/Mary Morse (14 Nov 1761-24 Nov 1825) from Uxbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts. She sometimes claimed to have been born in Massachusetts, which is technically unassailable since all of Maine was part of Massachusetts at the time.

Stephen and Polly married on 14 Oct 1811 in Avon, Franklin County, Maine. Stephen later served in the War of 1812.

1820 and 1830 census records showed a Stephen Lufkin in Oxford County, Maine. The 1840 census showed the family in Berlin, Franklin County: Stephen, in his fifties, with a wife in her forties, a woman in her twenties, three boys between the ages of 5 and 19, and a girl under 5. They probably hadn’t moved. Franklin County wasn’t created until 1838.

The 1850 census listed Stephen and Polly (both 60) in Phillips with sons Luther (23) and Charles (15), widowed daughter Lucinda Grover (36), and Lucinda’s children William (8) and Mary (7). Also present was Stephen’s father, David (85), categorized as “pauper”. They were living next door to James and Mary Morrison, doubtless some relation to their son-in-law David. Their married daughter Hannah was just up the road in Madrid.

The 1860 census showed them, ages 70 and 69, with just Charles (24) still home.

Stephen died in 1868 and is buried in Marrow Cemetery, Phillips. The 1870 census showed Polly living with Charles and his family in Phillips. She died in 1873.

Children

William Lufkin (1811-1851)

William married Hannah P. Beedy/Beede (Jun 1815-1 Nov 1889) from New Hampshire about 1837. They settled in Madrid, and had eight children:

Louisa A. (5 Oct 1837-14 Jan 1919) — m. Loren Adams on 22 Nov 1854

Franklin “Frank” (1839-16 Aug 1910) — m. Sarah Dunham in 1862; m. Mary Amelia Norris

Vesta (15 Aug 1840-26 Sep 1913) — m. William Isaac Sargent on 2 Mar 1862

Mary Ada (30 Sep 1841-26 Oct 1892) — m. Samuel Brackett Wing on 2 Aug 1857

Sarah (Jan 1843-12 Jul 1904) — m. Hugh J. Staples about 1860

John (1847-????) — prob. died young

William, Jr. (8 Feb 1849-7 Mar 1905) — m. Abbie L. about 1880

Hannah Elinora “Nora” (8 Mar 1851-after 1930) — m. Andrew Warren Davenport on 20 Mar 1871

The 1850 census for Madrid listed them with seven children: Louisa A. (13), Franklin (11), Vesta (9), Mary A. (8), Sarah (7), John (3), and William (1). They were next door to Joseph Dunham Hinkley and family. William died in 1851, the day after the birth of his youngest child, and is buried in Madrid Village.

The 1860 showed the household down to Hannah (supposedly 43), Franklin (21), Vesta (19), William (11), and Hannah Jr. (9). On 11 Feb 1865, Hannah (supposedly 47) married Salmon Sargent (52) in Madrid, a second marriage for both. By 1880, she was widowed again and living with son William and his wife Abbie. She died in 1889.

Lucinda Lufkin (~1814-1873)

Lucinda married one Thomas Grover – reportedly from England according to daughter Mary, so apparently not the Thomas B. Grover born 8 Nov 1808 in Avon. They had two children I know of:

William H. (1842-19 Dec 1867)

Mary L. (4 Mar 1845-22 Jun 1921) — m. Joel D. Grover about 1860

In 1850, Lucinda and the kids were living with her parents, so we presume Thomas had died. In 1860, she was living in Avon with a Peter Smith (74) from Massachusetts, listed as housekeeper, while daughter Mary was living with/married to someone named Joel D. Grover (1832-1910) in Farmington.

Lucinda’s son William died in 1867, and her father Stephen the year after that. In 1870 she was still in Avon, but now with a William W. Carr (62) from Maine, still as housekeeper. Lucinda died in 1873, and is buried in Marrow Cemetery, Phillips, the same place as her father, her son William, and her sister Hannah.

Hannah Lufkin (~1820-1855)

Hannah has her own entry in the family tree.

Luther Lufkin (1826-????)

No trace of Luther after the 1850 census.

Charles Elmer Lufkin (1832-1916)

Charles married Roxanna Lufkin (1840-1923) on 20 May 1866. Her father was David Lufkin, Jr., Stephen’s younger brother, and her mother was Mercey Woodman Stinchfield, Polly’s younger sister, so she and Charles were double-first-cousins. They settled in Phillips. Known children:

Flora Jennie (1867-19xx) — m. ??? Petrie in 1898; m. Ira Eben Russell on 30 Mar 1908; divorced, 192x

Charles Weston (22 Sep 1868-3 Oct 1944) — m. Linna Lane on 2 Jun 1903; divorced; m. Burnette Cora Hewins Harden on 1 Jan 1915

Willard H. (26 Aug 1870-24 Apr 1952) — m. Viola Clark on 14 Sep 1895

Archie Leland (1 Jun 1875-9 Nov 1944) — m. Winnie A. Douglas on 1 May 1908

Etta (1879-????) — prob. m. Addison West in 1899

In 1870, Charles’s widowed mother Polly was living with them. Charles died in 1916, and Roxanna in 1923. They are buried together in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Their son Charles W. is buried there too.
