George (10 Feb 1808-7 Dec 1878) — m. Roxana Howland on 2 Dec 1832

Joshua (1810-26 Feb 1874) — m. Huldah Howard about 1832

Samuel A. (27 Jul 1812-????) — m. Betsy Hill about 1840

Levi (7 Jun 1815-24 Aug 1883) — m. Abigail Dunham Hinkley on 28 Oct 1835

Polly Aspenwall (26 May 1817-6 Apr 1894) — m. Joseph Dunham Hinkley on 1 Sep 1835

Abigail (26 Jul 1820-27 Mar 1883) — m. Ezekiel Hinkley on 3 Apr 1837

Sarah “Sally” (5 Apr 1823-?25 Oct 1909?) — poss. m. Samuel Burgess in 184x

Ebenezer was born in Lewiston, Androscoggin County (Lincoln County at the time), Maine to Joshua Lake and Sarah Dill.

I don’t have ancestry information for Sally, but daughter Polly said her mother was from Sharon, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. There were several Aspinwall families in that county in the late 1700s.

Ebenezer and Sally married on 18 Oct 1807 in Pittston, Maine. They lived in or near Phillips, Franklin County, Maine. Ebenezer served in the War of 1812.

Sally died in 1823, and is buried in the Madrid Village Cemetery, Madrid, Franklin County, Maine.

Ebenezer married again, to Isabella Blethin (29 Oct 1805-1 Jun 1860), on 10 Nov 1825. They had at least seven children. I have names for five:

Aurilla Toothaker (19 Dec 1827-13 Apr 1875) — m. John William Hinkley on 2 Jun 1842

John Blethen (14 Apr 1834-3 Mar 1907) — m. Leah Minerva Porter in 1861

unknown boy (183x-184x)

unknown girl (183x-184x)

Hannah W. (Feb 1842-3 Jul 1907) — m. Hiram H. Bryer in 185x

Orpha P. (~1845-8 Aug 1867) — m. Leverett H. Porter on 25 Oct 1865

Lydia Hatch (24 May 1848-26 Jul 1926) — m. Rufus E. Silver on 7 Sep 1867

The 1840 census recorded the household of Ebenezer Lake consisting of a man in his 50s, a woman in her 30s, and four children: a girl age 10-14, a boy age 5-9, and a boy and girl under 5. Assuming the age ranges are correct, those were all children of Isabella.

The 1850 census, the first to name dependents, showed Ebenezer (63) and Isabel (44) in Madrid, with children Orpha (5) and Lydia (2).

Isabella died in 1860. I can’t find a record of where she’s buried. Ebenezer died in 1862. He’s buried with Sally.

Children with Sarah

George Lake (1808-1878)

George married Roxana Howland (14 Feb 1813-9 Apr 1905) in Phillips in 1832. They moved to Arcadia, Wayne County, New York (out west of Syracuse) before 1840. Their children:

Martha G. (10 Mar 1834-2 Oct 1921) — m. James Peterson on 12 Oct 1850

Darius (7 Feb 1836-22 Apr 1907) — m. Elsie Ann Parkhurst

Charles H. (17 Aug 1838-1 Nov 1916) — m. Sophronia E. Aldrich

Horace (1840-????)

Samuel H. (~1843-1908) — m. Ellen C. Worthley in 1866

Lydia H. (20 May 1845-22 Jan 1928) — m. Matthew Wolfe in 1867

Addie (~1855-29 May 1922)

George died in 1878 and is buried with Roxana in East Newark Cemetery, Newark, Wayne County, New York.

Most of the children remained in Wayne County, although son Charles settled in Michigan.

Joshua Lake (1810-1874)

Joshua married Huldah Howard (20 Feb 1811-27 Nov 1876) about 1832 in Phillips, Maine. They lived at first in Phillips. Their children:

Chaney Waitstil (15 Dec 1833-11 Dec 1912) — m. Harriet C. Lake on 3 Dec 1867

Ebenezer (20 Jan 1834-26 Mar 1921) — m. Lydia A. Ridley

Uriah Howard (19 May 1836-4 May 1893) — m. Emily Champion on 12 Mar 1865

George (17 Oct 1838-????)

Arvilla Grover (16 Oct 1840-1864)

Rosilla Wyman (24 Nov 1842-12 Oct 1930) — m. William D. Van Duyne about 1864; m. Peter Silas Ackerson about 1867

Mary L. (24 Jul 1846-4 Apr 1920) — m. John H. Brown in 1862

In the mid-1840s, they joined Joshua’s brother George in Arcadia, New York. By 1860 they were in Phelps, Ontario County, New York. The 1870 census found them in Michigan, although some of the adult children remained in New York.

Joshua died in Rose Township, Oakland County, Michigan in 1874. Huldah died there in 1876. They’re buried in Rose Center Cemetery, as is their son Uriah.

Samuel A. Lake (1812-????)

Samuel joined his brother George in Arcadia, New York, where he married Elizabeth “Betsy” Hill (~1816-186x) about 1840. Their children:

George (1841-????)

Lavina (~1843-after 1910) — m. Albert Potter in 187x

Harriet C. (1847-26 Nov 1900) — m. Chaney Waitstil Lake on 3 Dec 1867

John S. (1849-????)

Mary Ann (1853-17 Nov 1870)

Ella Elizabeth (13 Sep 1859-27 Sep 1940) — m. Orlando Chester Predmore on 11 Jul 1875

In the mid- to late 1850s, they moved to Deerfield, Livingston County, Michigan. The 1860 census showed them there with five of their six children, missing only George. There was a George Lake (18) working as a hired hand on the farm of John T. Everts back in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York – probably him.

Betsy apparently died during the 1860s. Samuel remarried to Mary A. ??? (~1830-????) from Canada. They had at least one child, possibly two:

Albert N. (~1865-????)

Charles W. (~1868-14 Feb 1888)

The 1870 census showed them in Rose Township, Oakland County, Michigan, the same place as Samuel’s brother Joshua. Samuel claimed he was only 53. Betsy’s daughters Mary Ann (19) and Ella (11) were there, and so were Spencer (19, born in New York), Albert N. (5, born in New York), and Charles (3, born in Michigan). Charles, at least, was probably the son of Samuel and his new wife Mary, and for now I assume Albert was too despite his supposedly being born in New York. Maybe the family briefly returned to New York before Betsy’s death? Or after, or because of? Or the census is just wrong?

Spencer is a harder case. Familysearch.org lists him as the son of Samuel and Betsy, but he wasn’t in the 1860 census with them. Maybe he’s a nephew for whom I have no other record.

Son George probably joined the rest of the family in Michigan. There was a George Lake (30, from New York) working as a hired hand on a farm in Oakland County, Michigan in the 1870 census.

Levi Lake (1815-1883)

Levi married Abigail Dunham Hinkley (5 Nov 1819-7 Aug 1892), daughter of Samuel Hinkley and Abbie Dunham. See the Hinkley-Dunham family page for their story.

Polly Aspenwall Lake (1817-1894)

Polly has her own entry in the family tree.

Abigail Lake (1820-1883)

Abigail married Ezekiel Hinkley (23 May 1815-11 Jan 1892), another child of Samuel Hinkley and Abbie Dunham, in 1837. See the Hinkley-Dunham family page for their story.

Sarah “Sally” Lake (1823-?1909?)

A woman named Sarah E. Lake, whose information aligns with 1823 Sally’s except that her mother’s name was recorded as “Lucy”, married a Samuel Burgess (18 Jul 1821-2 Oct 1894) and lived in Peru, Oxford County, Maine, where she died in 1909. Can’t confirm the lineage.

Children with Isabella

Aurilla Toothaker (1827-1875)

Aurilla married John William Hinkley (15 Dec 1821-24 Oct 1883), son of Samuel Hinkley and Abigail Dunham, in 1842. See the Hinkley-Dunham family page for their story.

John Blethen Lake (1834-1907)

John married Leah Minerva Porter (Feb 1838-28 Mar 1926) in 1861. Children:

Olivia Eldora (25 Apr 1862-19xx) — m. Abner M. Dickensen on 3 Feb 1883; m. John Loring Bates on 17 Aug 1911

Elsie Catherine (10 Mar 1864-1944) — m. Dennis Coyle on 13 Dec 1882

Stephen E. (13 Sep 1866-31 Aug 1933) — m. Jennie Ward on 14 Apr 1907

Edith Maud (8 Dec 1874-3 Jun 1897) — m. Clarence A. Adams on 1 Apr 1895

John Hartley (2 May 1879-????)

They lived in Linneus, Aroostook County, Maine. Most of their children settled there too. John died in 1907, and is buried in Linneus Cemetery.

Hannah W. Lake (1842-1907)

Hannah married Hiram H. Bryer (~1826-18xx), a shoemaker from New Hampshire. The family name is sometimes transcribed as Brian or Beyer. Known children:

Ada Mary “Addie” (23 Aug 1863-26 Oct 1899) — m. Frank E. Thomas on 25 Dec 1881

Charles H. (1868-1941) — m. Georgie Viola Ingalls on 4 Feb 1891

The 1860 census found them living in Danvers, Essex County, Massachusetts. Hannah’s younger sister Orpha was with them. In 1870 they were in Middleton, Essex County; in 1880 they were back in Danvers. The 1880 census listed son Charles as “John” for some reason.

The 1900 census showed Hannah, widowed, living with Charles and family in Beverly, Essex County. She died in 1907, and is buried in Central Cemetery, Beverly. Both her children are buried there as well.

Orpha Lake (~1845-1867)

In the 1860 census, Orpha was living with her married sister Hannah in Danvers, Essex County, Massachusetts. She married Leverett Henry Porter (1843-1868) there in 1865 under the name Orpha Byron, so... what, her sister and brother-in-law adopted her? She seems to have had no children before her death in 1867.

Lydia H. Lake (1848-1926)

Lydia married Rufus E. Silver (1824-1892) in Danvers, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1867. They had seven children:

Flora B. (4 Jan 1868-28 Oct 1915) — m. Frederick C. McGray on 27 Mar 1881

Martha Hellen (4 Jan 1870-Jan 1870)

Roscoe E. (30 Jul 1871-May 1934) — m. Sarah Edith Pratt Hughes

Louise F. (1874-4 Oct 1946) — m. George W. Thompson on 29 Jun 1896

Martha Helen (4 Jun 1876-May 1952)

Franklin Woodman (19 Mar 1880-4 Dec 1965) — m. Etta L. Truitt on 17 Dec 1898; m. Louise Day on 14 Mar 1913

Bertha Gertrude (31 Aug 1883-14 Mar 1885)

Lydia died in 1926, and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.
