Joseph was born in Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. His parents were Israel Dunham (20 Oct 1741-31 May 1828) and Hannah Whiting (1746-1829).

Abigail was from Hanover, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, the daughter of Solomon Bates, Jr. (29 Jun 1741-1815) and Aquilla ??? (15 May 1743-25 Apr 1826). Her parents are reportedly buried in, respectively, Fayette, Kennebec County and Greene, Androscoggin County.

I don’t know when or where they married. They settled in Franklin County, Maine, reportedly living at one time in Avon. According to a local history, Joseph was among the original settlers of the town of Phillips, Franklin County in 1807-1808.

Joseph died in 1832 in Madrid, Franklin County. I don’t know when Abigail died, or where either is buried.

Children

Some records list as a member of this family one Lydia Dunham (17 May 1796-11 Sep 1864), wife of John M. Kinney, but her parents were James Dunham and Elizabeth Robbins.

Solomon Dunham (1792-1819)

Solomon married Nancy Gilman Kinney (28 Jul 1796-7 Mar 1849) in 1817. As far as I know, there were no children. He died two years later. About a month after his death, his widow married his younger brother Hosea.

Joseph Dunham (1793-1863)

Joseph married Charlotte Mills (1790-16 May 1877) on 4 Mar 1820. Known children:

George (8 Sep 1831-????)

Charles Henry (6 Apr 1834-1 Jul 1910)

The 1830 census showed Joseph in Oxford County, next door to brother Sylvanus and a few houses away from sister Dianna. They had two boys and a girl, all under age 5: Sylvanus, William, and Lucinda. There were also two unexplained women, one in her twenties and one in her sixties.

In the 1850 census for Phillips, Franklin County, Joseph and Charlotte had the youngest four children still at home. Joseph died in 1863, and is buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid. Charlotte died in 1877 and is buried with him.

In the 1910 census, sons William and Charles were sharing a place in Madrid.

Abigail Kenny “Abbie” Dunham (1794-1878)

Abbie has her own entry in the family tree.

Israel Dunham (1796-1843)

Israel married Lydia Marrow (12 May 1802-18 Jan 1870) in 1824. Known children:

Hosea Augustus Dunham, Sr. (1799-1877)

Hosea married Nancy Gilman Kinney (28 Jul 1796-7 Mar 1849), his brother Solomon’s widow, in 1820 in Phillips. The 1820 census for Oxford County showed them as a young couple with no children yet, although there was an unidentified older woman living with them. Their children:

Hepsibah (10 Dec 1822-10 Apr 1882) — m. James Chase Ellis in 1849

Sebre (15 Sep 1824-28 Sep 1902) — m. Ann M. Lowell in 1847; m. Elvira Lowell on 17 Sep 1872

Hosea Augustus, Jr. (6 Oct 1840-18 Aug 1905) — m. Mary Hannah Sargent

Nancy died in 1849. Despite his age, Hosea served in the 16th Maine Infantry and 20th Maine Infantry during the last two years of the Civil War. Apart from that, he remained in Madrid all his life, and apparently never remarried. He died in 1877, and is buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid.

Hannah Dunham (1800-1874)

Hannah married John Sargent, Jr. (?9 Sep 1797?-1 Aug 1872) in 1819. They remained in Madrid. Their children:

Edmund Newton (23 Mar 1820-16 May 1900) — m. Sybil G. Clough on 23 Mar 1843

Mary Wells (2 Dec 1832-9 Sep 1886) — m. John Gideon Conant on 19 May 1852

John died in 1872, and Hannah in 1874. Both are buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid.

Several of the children moved to Massachusetts, and the eldest, Edmund, wound up in Wisconsin.

Dianna Dunham (1803-~1889)

Dianna married Aaron Plummer (30 Jun 1804-~1884) from Cumberland County, Maine in 1827. They had at least two children:

Lydia Ann (?1822?-????) — prob. not of this family

unknown boy (182x-????)

Elvira S. B. (1 Nov 1834-5 Feb 1913) — m. Orin B. Thompson on 10 Sep 1854

In the 1830 census they were living near Dianna’s brothers Joseph and Sylvanus in Oxford County, and had one child, a boy. They later settled in Bridgton, Cumberland County, west of Lewiston and north-northwest of Portland – or, they stayed in the same place and the county boundaries shifted around them.

Can’t find them in the 1840 census. They were living in Bridgton in census records from 1850 through 1880. Aaron died about 1884, and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Bridgton. Dianna died about 1889, and is buried with him.

Daughter Elvira died in Brooklyn, New York in 1913, but is buried back in Bridgton with her parents. The Lydia A. Plummer from Maine who showed up in the 1870, 1875 (state), and 1880 census records for Minneapolis, Minnesota was probably not a child of this family, although claimed as such in some online sources.

Sylvanus Dunham (1807-1879)

Sylvanus married Anna Smith (18 Apr 1805-1883) on 29 Nov 1829. Their children:

Curtis Smith (23 Mar 1830-3 Sep 1838)

Mary Bates (30 Jun 1833-after 1880) — m. Daniel B. Cash on 30 Dec 1857

Jane Ellen (27 May 1836-24 Mar 1905) — m. Thaddeus Richardson Barker in 1858

William Curtis (27 Nov 1839-8 Mar 1906)

In the 1830 census for Oxford County, which showed Sylvanus living near several of his siblings, he and Charlotte had one child, a boy under 5. That must have been Curtis.

The family lived in Madrid, Franklin County until Sylvanus and Anna died, in 1879 and 1883 respectively. They’re both buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid.

There was another, older Sylvanus Dunham in Oxford County who died the same year as our Sylvanus.
