James was born in Falmouth, Cumberland County, Maine, the son of Abraham Brackett (3 Jul 1714-10 Aug 1806) from Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and Joanna Springer (1714-1772) from New Hampshire. He was a private with the Massachusetts militia during the Revolutionary War.

Mary was born in Falmouth, Cumberland County, Maine to Benjamin Lunt (15 Aug 1747-1824) from Falmouth and Mercy Brackett (1747-Dec 1829) from Massachusetts, who married in Maine on 7 Jan 1768.

James died in 1845. He is buried in Field Cemetery, Phillips, on Toothaker Pond Road. Mary died in 1849, not 1842 as reported by some sources, and is buried with him.
