Andrew Webster BLAKE (23 Jun 1766-????) +
Susanna BAKEMAN (26 Jun 1762-30 Jan 1843)

Prudence (23 Oct 1785-25 Sep 1850) — m. Henry Dyer on 28 Jul 1801

Susannah (5 Oct 1787-????)

Andrew, Jr. (29 Oct 1789-?1871?) — m. Susan Faust about 1827

Ruth Goodwin (14 Oct 1791-25 Jun 1849) — m. Ebenezer Hodsdon on 13 Aug 1812

Richard (13 Nov 1793-7 Nov 1857) — m. Mary “Polly” Webster on 18 May 1817

Andrew was born in Georgetown, Sagadahoc County on the coast of Maine, son of Timothy Blake and Prudence Webster.

Susanna was born in Georgetown also, eldest child of John Bakeman from Holland and Christiana Smart from Biddeford, York County, Maine.

Andrew and Susanna married in 1784 in Castine, Hancock County, Maine. Andrew was a mariner, captain, and shipwright. Caution: There was more than one Blake family in coastal Maine that named a child Andrew W. There was even more than one Andrew Blake from that area who married a Bakeman.

Their children were all recorded born in Castine. However, the 1790 census listed them in Penobscot, Hancock County as a couple with four children. No explanation of that fourth child, but it could have been one who died young, or a servant. Their neighbors included two John Bakeman households, senior and junior – undoubtedly Susanna’s father and brother.

The 1800 census put them in Castine. They had five children: two girls and a boy age 10-15, and a boy and girl under 10. That accounts for all the children of record.

The 1810 census listed the family back in Penobscot: a woman age 45+, a man between 26 and 44 (Andrew was four years younger than Susanna), and a young man and woman between 16 and 25 who must have been Ruth and Richard.

Andrew’s date of death is unknown. Susanna reportedly died in 1843 in Brooksville, Hancock County, Maine. Their places of burial are unknown.

Children

Prudence Blake (1785-1850)

Prudence married Henry Dyer (11 Aug 1776-1825) on 28 Jul 1801 in Penobscot. They remained in Hancock County. They had at least three children:

unknown boy (180x-181x)

Ruth Hodgdon (12 Nov 1814-12 May 1906) — m. Michael Boyce about 1840

Lucy J. (10 Jan 1826-20 Jan 1901) — m. John P. Johnson on 16 Oct 1842

The 1810 census showed them with one boy. The 1820 census showed them with one girl. Henry died in 1825. A Prudence Dyer married Nathaniel Ripley from Belfast on 9 Apr 1830 in Montville, Waldo County, but I don’t know if that was her. Prudence reportedly died in Brookville in 1850.

Susannah Blake (1787-????)

No data

Andrew Blake, Jr. (1789-?1871?)

Andrew went west to Hancock County, Ohio, where he married Susan Faust or Fouch (1810-188x) from Virginia about 1827. Children:

Isaac Newton (8 Sep 1828–?1 May 1879?) — reportedly died in Indiana; doubtful

Nathaniel D. (15 May 1830–16 Jan 1892) — m. Frances Kinion on 16 Mar 1854

Sarah Elizabeth (1832–1916) — m. James Jenkins on 1 Sep 1853

James (1835–5 Nov 1864) — reportedly died in Tennessee

Catharine (4 Aug 1839–25 Jan 1901) — m. Christian Myers on 13 Apr 1860

Emma Elisha/Eliza (1841–????)

Ann M. (~1845-????)

Jonathan D. “John” (3 Oct 1848–7 Jun 1924) — m. Mary Margaret Robbins on 26 Dec 1878

Andrew Aaron (30 Oct 1850–10 Aug 1936) — m. Eudora Ann Kimball on 23 Jun 1879

The 1850 census showed them in Jackson, Hancock County, Ohio: Andrew (52) and Susan (41) with children Isaac (22), Nathan (20), Elizabeth (18), James (15), Catharine (11), E. Eliza (9), Ann M. (5), and John (3). The 1860 census showed them in Marion Township, Hancock County: Andrew (70), Susan (49), and children James (26), Ann M. (14), John (12), and Andrew (9). Andrew reportedly died in 1871. In the 1880 census, Susan (70) was living with youngest son Andrew and his young family in Monroe, Mahaska County, Iowa. According to her son Nathaniel’s obituary, Susan is buried next to Nathaniel in Mount Hope Cemetery, Burlington, Coffey County, Kansas.

Ruth Goodwin Blake (1791-1849)

Ruth has her own entry in the family tree.

Richard Blake (1793-?1857?)

Richard married Mary “Polly” Webster (~1793-after 1860) in Castine on 18 May 1817. They lived in Brooksville, Hancock County. Richard was a sea captain. There are records of just two children:

Annie D. (~1829-14 May 1900) — m. James S. Mitchell in 185x

George Bruce (Jan 1833-10 Jun 1911) — m. Harriet Frances Magee on 8 May 1864

In 1820, Richard and Polly were sharing the house with a man over 45 — likely Polly’s father. The 1840 census listed Richard Blake, forties, with two women in their thirties, a girl age 10-14, and a boy 5-9, which would be Annie and George. In 1850, the family was Richard (59), wife Polly (57), and children Ann (21) and George (17). Richard reportedly died in 1857. In 1860, Mary (66) had just George (27) with her. I don’t know for certain what became of her after that. The Mary W. Blake (1794-1867) who died in Portland was listed as married, not widowed, and some contributors to familysearch.org believe her husband was a Richard H. Blake from England. However, census records show daughter Annie did move to Portland, where her husband was from. George settled in Belfast, Waldo County, where he died in 1911. Note there was a different George Blake of similar age who lived in Portland and who also married a Harriet.
