Patsy was born in Amherst County, Virginia, to Josiah Dodd, Sr. (1740-1808) and Mary “Polly” Luttrell (1757-15 Dec 1809). The family later settled in Knox County, Tennessee.

Jacob and Patsy married on 8 Jan 1796 in Amherst County, Virginia, where she was from.

They moved to Knox County, Tennessee around the turn of the century. Their son Moses was born in Knoxville in 1806.

Jacob died in 1825 in Knox County. Patsy died in 1846. She’s reportedly buried in Roberts Cemetery in North Knoxville, but nobody seems to know where that cemetery is.

Children

James Robertson Roberts (1797-1864)

James, born in his mother’s home county of Amherst County, Virginia, married Mahala Everett on 16 Jun 1814 in Knox County. I don’t know whether they had children. He married Elizabeth Luttrell (4 Nov 1793-20 Jan 1887) from Virginia, probably a cousin, on 31 Dec 1819. The family remained in Knox County. Known children with Elizabeth:

William McKendree (Nov 1819-190x) — m. Darthula Caroline Smith on 25 Feb 1852

Malinda Jane (2 Jul 1821-6 Oct 1913) — m. John Smith Bell on 21 Jan 1848

James Madison (25 Apr 1823-10 Jul 1907) — m. Margaret J. May on 25 May 1865

John Marshall (6 Jan 1825-31 Jan 1880) — m. Margaret Ann Dowlen

Martha E. (1827-25 Apr 1915) — never married

Milton Young (Aug 1828-1919) — m. Elizabeth M. Fox on 8 Sep 1855; m. Eliza L. Wooten on 10 Aug 1885

Tilitha Caroline (~1830-????) — poss. m. Owen ?Garanto? on 12 May 1853

Elbert Sevier (1832-????)

Andrew L. (1834-????)

The 1840 census showed the family as a couple in their 40s with a man in his twenties, two boys and a girl age 15-19, two girls and a boy age 10-14, two boys age 5-9, and a boy under 5. By 1860, the only children remaining were Martha, Caroline, and Elbert, all the women were lying about their ages, and they had a probable grandson named Pethway (6). James reportedly died in 1864.

In 1880, Elizabeth was living with her daughter Martha and grandson Charles. She reportedly died in 1887 at Beaver Creek, Knox County.

Elizabeth Roberts (~1800-????)

Elizabeth married James Everett (~1804-????) from Virginia, a brother to her brother James’s first wife, on 5 May 1825 in Knox County. They had at least four children:

Jacob W. (~1826-????)

Zachariah (~1827-~1870) — m. Cena Malinda McBride about 1847

Joseph (~1827-????)

Louisa (~1831-????)

The 1830 census for Knox County listed the household of James Everett as a man in his twenties, a woman in her thirties, a boy under 10, and a boy under 5. The 1840 Tennessee census listed three families that might have been them, but the most probable is the one in Monroe County: a man in his thirties, a woman in her forties, two boys and a girl under 15, and a boy under 10. That almost matches the four claimed children, and almost agrees with the 1830 census.

In 1860, Elizabeth (60) and James (56) were living in Bradley County, with no children left at home. No trace of them thereafter. At least one of their sons moved to Illinois.

William Eli Roberts (~1800-????)

William, born in Tennessee, married Martha Sample (~1802-????) on 4 Mar 1819 in Knox County. They had at least one child:

William A. (~1823-185x) — m. Virenia ??? in 184x

The 1850 census of Knox County showed William (58) with wife Martha (48) and a girl named Nancy A. Mason (30 Apr 1840-8 Mar 1885), who married George W. Davis in 1864. Don’t know what her connection to them was. Their son William A. was living next door with his wife and 4-month old daughter Martha.

The 1860 census of Sevier County showed William (68) with wife Martha (58) and orphaned grand-daughter Martha Caroline “Mattie” Roberts (Jul 1850-9 Apr 1924), who married Porter L. Carmichael in 1867. There are no definite records for William after 1860.

Josiah Roberts (1802-1871)

Josiah, named for his maternal grandfather, was a Methodist preacher. He married Mary “Polly” Stone (~1802-????) from North Carolina on 25 Dec 1823 in Blount County, Tennessee. Known children:

Leonora M. Caroline (~1846-????) — m. John F. Burt on 17 Feb 1870

The family moved to Georgia about 1830 or 1831; to Itawamba County, Mississippi by 1844, where the 1850 census listed them as slave-owners; and to Pleasant Ridge Township, Fulton County, Arkansas by 1860.

The 1870 census showed Josiah and Mary living in Gainesboro Township, Independence County, Arkansas. Josiah died in 1871, and is buried in Campground Cemetery, Bethesda, Independence County.

Moses Roberts (1806-188x)

Moses has his own entry in the family tree.

Benjamin Franklin Roberts (1808-1893)

Benjamin’s first wife was Mary “Polly” Berry, whom he married in 1827. They lived in Knox County, Tennessee. Their children:

On 29 Dec 1842, Benjamin married Ann Iva “Anivy” Rimmer (1823-1905) from North or South Carolina. There are several alternate transcriptions of her surname, including Reimus, Reiman, Remmus, and Risner. Their children:

Mary Jane (1852-????)

Harriet Malinda “Hattie” (1854-188x) — m. Nealus S. Brown Hammond on 1 Feb 1874

On 12 Sep 1854, Benjamin was appointed postmaster of Thorn Grove, Knox County. Between 1860 and 1870, Benjamin and Ann Ivy moved a short distance east to Jefferson County, Tennessee, where about 1870 Benjamin was a dry-goods merchant in the town of Kansas. Benjamin died there in 1893. He is buried in Balch Cemetery, Jefferson County. Anivy died in 1905, and is buried with him.

Zachariah Roberts (1811-18??)

Zachariah married Naomi McKinney (~1808-18xx) from North Carolina about 1830. They lit out for Alabama, where their second and third children were born, and then Texas, where the 1850 and 1860 census records found them. Known children:

Martha Adeline (1831-????)

Mary Ann (1834-????)

Charles Whitfield (1836-????) — m. Delila Fair Adamson about 1856

M. (1843-????)

Harriet “Hattie” (1848-????) — m. James M. Wright on 4 Oct 1865

No trace of Zachariah or Naomi after 1860. The 1870 census showed Mary Ann and her married sister Harriet living in Collin County, Texas. The 1880 census showed Charles, a widower, living with his children and his sister Mary Ann in Dallas, and Harriet, also widowed, in the same area. I can’t find any of them after 1880, although some descendants later moved to California.

Sarah Elizabeth “Sally” Roberts (1814-1892)

Sally married James F. Guinn (~1801-186x) in 1829. They lived in Knox County. Children:

James died in the 1860s. A man with details matching son Hugh died in 1865 while serving with the 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, a Union regiment. By 1870, Sally was living in Polk County with just her three youngest. By 1880 she was in Grainger County with just son James. She reportedly died in 1892.
