Isaac PERKINS (~1750-27 Oct 1818) +
Rachel ALLEN (~1755-~1790)

William, Sr. (8 Apr 1770-1851) — m. Nancy Marsh about 1793

Elisha, Sr. (????-18 Mar 1847) — m. Margaret Ferris on 13 May 1813

Joseph M. (~1783-185x) — m. Ann ???

John Buckley (1788-1 Nov or 11 Jan 1876) — m. Sarah Lyon

Sarah Ann (~1790-28 Jul 1879) — m. Alexander Clark, Jr. on 25 Jun 1814; m. Daniel Eaton in 184x

Melinda (~1791-1840) — m. Joel Edgett, Sr. on 25 Apr 1814

Richard (~1794-15 Nov 1872) — m. Catherine DeLong on 6 Dec 1813

Isaac was reportedly born in Newcastle, Westchester County, New York. Online accounts have him confused with one or possibly two contemporaries who shared his name: Isaac Perkins (4 Sep 1741-5 Sep 1795) born in Massachusetts to John Perkins and Abigail Lee and buried in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut; and Isaac Perkins (4 Jun 1749-????) born in Lyme, New London County, Connecticut to James Perkins and Margaret Andrews. Some of the children attributed to him by online sources probably belong to these other two men.

Rachel was the daughter of John Allen (1 Oct 1727-1786) from Hackensack and Rachel Van Buskirk (12 May 1732-1771), who married on 26 Oct 1749 at the Reformed Dutch Church in New York City.

Isaac and Rachel married on 21 Jul 1769 – reportedly in Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey, although the marriage seems to have been recorded in Monmouth County.

Isaac operated a ferry at Hackensack. During the Revolutionary War, he was a part-time member of De Lancey’s Brigade, a Tory militia formed on Long Island in 1776.

Isaac and Rachel were among the British loyalists evacuated to New Brunswick in 1783. They’re said to have lived in “Kennebecasis”, which is one of the two rivers that meet just west of St. John.

Rachel died around 1790, and Isaac in 1818. No details yet.

The list of their children is still tentative.

Children

William Perkins, Sr. (1770-1851)

William, Sr. married Nancy Marsh (1774-1851), daughter of William and Anna Marsh, about 1793. They lived in Nova Scotia. Their alleged children:

Anna (~1792-????)

William, Jr. (~1794-????) — m. Lucina Joy

Sarah (27 Aug 1800-????) — m. James Ferrier about 1818

Rachael (24 Mar 1802-28 Mar 1887) — m. Jonathan Ferrier

Isaac (21 Aug 1805-~1855)

Abram (12 Jan 1804-????) — m. Mary Hornby on 12 Jul 1830

Eliza (~1808-????) — m. John Reed Marsh on 2 Apr 1829

James (~1815-????) — m. Sarah Adams on 18 Feb 1841

Mathilda (11 Apr 1818-????)

Fanny L. ()

Clarissa (~1820-????)

...I’m not sure I believe all that. William seems to have later moved to Markham Township, York County (now York Regional Municipality), Ontario. At least one of their children, John, settled there as well, as shown by the 1851 census.

Joseph Perkins (1783-185x)

Joseph might not have been of this family. He was born in the US, and married someone named Ann (~1786-????). In 1851 they were living in Springfield District, King’s County, New Brunswick with their married son Daniel. He’s the only child I know of:

Daniel H. (~1823-????) — m. Julia Ann ??? in 184x

Elisha Perkins (????-1847)

Elisha married Margaret Ferris (25 Dec 1786-????) in Washington County, the easternmost part of Maine, on 13 May 1813. Margaret variously claimed to be from Maine or New Brunswick. They settled in Alexander, Washington County. Children:

John (28 Sep 1814-Oct 1816)

Ebenezer (28 Sep 1814-Oct 1816) — either a twin of or a second name for John

John James (13 Nov 1815-10 Mar 1899) — m. Sarah M. ???

Ebenezer (23 Apr 1817-27 Oct 1841)

William (16 Jul 1819-????)

Joseph (16 Jul 1820-16 Feb 1895)

Elisha, Jr. (18 Sep 1821-????)

Solomon (15 Sep 1823-????)

Mary Ann (13 Apr 1826-????)

James (12 Sep 1830-14 Jun 1835)

Margaret (1 May 1832-????)

The 1840 census showed Elisha and Margaret as a couple in their fifties with six children: three boys age 15-19, a boy and girl age 10-14, and a girl 5-9. Sons Ebenezer and John James had households next door. Elisha died in 1847. In 1850, Margaret was living with son John James and family. In 1860, she was with sons William and Elisha Jr., still in Alexander. I don’t know when she died. The record claiming her death on 4 Feb 1855 is clearly either wrong or for someone else, possibly her namesake daughter.

John Buckley Perkins (1788-1876)

John married Sarah Lyon (~1784-2 May 1860). They remained in New Brunswick. Known children:

Joseph B. (14 Nov 1810-????) — m. Mary E. Lyon; m. Sarah R. Crawford after 1861

John Henry L. (8 Dec 1812-????) — m. Lucy York

Isaac C. (16/26 Oct 1814-18 May 1897) — m. Susanna Craft

Charles T. (9 Nov 1816-????) — m. Harriet D. Lyon

James E. (15 Mar 1818-????) — m. Eliza A. Lyon

Josiah M. (28 Jun 1820-????) — m. Charlotte Watters; m. Clara C. Anderson

Rachel A. (5 Mar 1822-????) — m. Samuel H. Watters

Harriet E. (~1824-????)

In 1823, a John Perkins – almost certainly this one – sold property on Range 1, Lot 4 along Pascobac Creek (Belleisle Creek) in Springfield Parish, Kings County, New Brunswick to Alexander and Sarah Clark.

In 1851, they were in Kingston, King’s County, listed as “Parken”. They moved to Petersville, Queen’s County to stay with their son Charles. Sarah died there in 1860. She’s buried in Lyons Cemetery, Gagetown, Queen’s County. John died in 1876, and is buried with Sarah.

Sarah Ann Perkins (~1790-1879)

Sarah Ann has her own entry in the family tree.

Melinda Perkins (~1791-~1840)

Melinda married Joel Edgett, Sr. (~1786-????) in 1814 in Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick. They had at least two children:

Joel, Jr. (~1815-????)

Lois (20 Jan 1820-12 Apr 1923) — m. Benjamin F. Caswell in 1856

Melinda died about 1840. Joel Sr. married Rachel Halliday on 18 Jan 1844.

Richard Perkins (~1794-1872)

Richard’s mother was reportedly Sarah Allen, not Rachel Allen. He married Catherine DeLong (29 Oct 1789-1860) on 6 Dec 1813 in Sussex, New Brunswick. They lived in Centreville, New Brunswick. Children:

Catherine E. "Katy" (5 Jun 1815-????) — m. John Clarke

Richard, Jr. (11 Dec 1816-21 Nov 1847) — m. Sarah ??? in 183x

John H. (~1823-????) — m. Frances ???

William (~1826-????) — died in Boston

Joel (15 Jun 1827-2 Sep 1887) — m. Barbara Adelaide “Blanche” Sharp

Ezekiah (~1829-????)

Charles A. (~1830-????) — m. Dorcas ???

Mary Ann (~1835-????)

The 1851 census showed Richard (57) and Catherine (61) living in Simonds, Carleton County, New Brunswick with their widowed daughter-in-law Sarah (32), her three children, son Charles (21), and Charles’s new wife Dorcas (16). Catherine reportedly died in 1860. In 1861, Richard (65) was still in Simonds, living with daughter Catherine and her family and near sons Aaron, Isaac, and Joel. In 1871 he was living with son John and family in Simonds. He died in 1872.
