William D. M. (8 May 1825-12 Oct 1872)

James was born in North Carolina, son of James McCuistion I (12 Apr 1737-24 Sep 1812) from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Catherine Jane Tennant (1740-1813) from Guilford County, North Carolina. He had a brother named Andrew (1772-1834). His family lived at first in Guilford County, and later near the headwaters of Long Creek about 30 miles east of Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Isabella was born in Tennessee, the daughter of James Scott (1746-1827) and wife Levina (1754-25 Jun 1830). Her siblings included Robert Andrew Scott and Mary Ann “Polly” Scott McFarland, wife of Robert McFarland.

James and Isabella married in 1796. At least some of their children were born in North Carolina.

James was a neighbor of Davy Crockett. There’s a family story about James trading him a horse in exchange for a rifle and three months’ labor in 1806.

James and Isabella both died in the 1830s. They’re buried in Hopewell Presybterian Church Cemetery, Dandridge, Tennessee.

Children

James McCuistion III (1796-1871)

James married Elizabeth Grisham (1795-1849) on 26 Jan 1819 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Clark ancestors Thompson Grisham and Katie Vaughn. Their children:

Columbus (1819-????)

Isabella (1821-1834)

Mary Jane (30 Oct 1823-1871) — m. James McCampbell Ashmore in 1844

Levina E. (1824-????) — m. John Henderson on 5 Jul 1842

James Thompson (Jan 1828-22 Sep 1908) — m. Sarah Ann Alfred on 17 Jan 1850; m. Adeline Sophia “Addie” Boatwright on 8 Jun 1898

Adaline (1830-????)

Rebecca ()

William C. (1836-????)

Joseph A. M. (5 May 1841-27 Aug 1871) — m. Mary Jane Sunderland on 1 Jun 1867

The family remained in Jefferson County. After Elizabeth’s 1849 death, James married Elizabeth Davis (1822-????) from North Carolina on 31 Oct 1849. Their children:

Sarah Sophronia (1850-????)

Samuel Alexander Fillmore “Sam” (16 Mar 1852-9 Apr 1915) — m. Mary Roberts Lewis

James died in 1871 and is buried in Mansfield Cemetery, apparently also called Hinkle Cemetery or Long Creek Cemetery, a few miles north-northeast of Dandridge.

Catherine McCuistion (1799-1886)

Catherine has her own entry in the family tree.

Lavina McCuistion (1800-1885)

Lavina married Harvey E. Weldon (1796-183x) on 2 Feb 1824. Their children:

William Emerson (16 Sep 1825-11 Mar 1907) — m. Catherine Callen on 10 Dec 1854

Sarah Isabel (~1830-1906) — m. Robert H. Ashmore on 25 Oct 1849

Caroline (~1832-????)

Mary Louisa (15 Jan 1834-25 Feb 1918) — m. Napoleon B. Guinn on 7 Nov 1872

Harvey evidently died in the 1830s. The 1840 census for Jefferson County listed Lavina Weldon as head of household, with four children, living near her younger brother Samuel. The 1850 census for Jefferson City showed her with William (23), Caroline (18), and Louisa (14), Sarah having recently married. In 1860 and 1870 Lavina was living with William and his family in Jefferson County. By 1880 they were in Grainger County. Lavina died in 1885.

Mary Ann McCuistion (1802-1840)

Mary Ann married William Shannon, Jr. (11 Jun 1795-6 Dec 1855) in 1827. Known children:

John Minnis (Apr 1828-1902) — m. Emmaline Keaton on 26 Oct 1862

Catharine Jane (26 Oct 1829-6 Apr 1909) — m. Edmond Clark in 1846

Mary Ann died in 1840. She’s buried in Bethesda Cemetery, Morristown, Hamblen County, Tennessee. In the 1850 census, William and son John were living with the Barton family in Grainger County. William remarried to Rachel Nicholson, with whom he had at least one more child before his death in 1855.

Rebecca Brown McCuistion (1808-1894)

Rebecca married George McFarland (7 Oct 1811-30 Nov 1884) in 1843, a very late marriage for her. George had previously been married to Polly Ann Barton (1813-1841), and came with two children, Harriet (b. ~1834) and John T. (b. ~1836). (There was a younger child named William whom he left with a grandmother.) His and Rebecca’s children:

Samuel Alex (12 Feb 1844-22 Jul 1864)

Mary A. (12 Apr 1846-30 Jul 1909) — m. A. T. Hunt in 1870

James McCuistion (17 Dec 1848-13 Jan 1930) — never married

Maria J. (~1850-????)

George Russell (2 Mar 1853-9 Apr 1903)

The 1850 census showed the family in Jefferson County with George’s two older children, his parents, and the younger children Samuel, Mary, and James. By 1860 the household included all five of the younger children. In 1870 they were in Grainger County with children Mary, James, Maria, and George. In 1880 they were in Morristown, Hamblen County, with James and George Jr. still at home, plus an unexplained young woman named Kate Bingham (18).

George died in 1884. Rebecca died in 1894, and is buried with George in McFarland Cemetery, Hamblen County, Tennessee.

Eleanor “Ellen” McCuistion (1808-1881)

Ellen’s reported date of birth conflicts with Rebecca’s, so somebody’s tombstone is wrong. She married William C. Haynes (18 Aug 1824-22 Mar 1853), widower of her younger sister Jane, in 1852. They apparently had no children, and he died the following year. By the 1860 census, she was living in a household headed by her unmarried brother Samuel. She remained with Samuel and their brother William at least until 1870. She died in 1881, and is buried in Mansfield Cemetery.

Joseph C. McCuistion (1811-1877)

Joseph married Effy Ann Laughlin (~1812-20 Nov 1861) from Pennsylvania, widow of Daniel Laughlin, in 1857 in Pulaski County, Arkansas. At the time of the wedding, they claimed to be 46 and 45 respectively. The 1850 census had reported Effy’s age as 28, but probably meant 38. They apparently had no children together, although Effy had at least four sons from her previous marriage.

The 1860 census showed Joseph in Little Rock as Joseph C. McQuiston, carpenter, supposed age 56, with wife “Fan” (no age given) from Pennsylvania. The household also included three of Effy’s four sons, listed with the surname McQuiston.

Effy died in 1861. Joseph died in 1877, and is buried with Effy in Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas.

Jane McCuistion (1813-1850)

Jane married William C. Haynes (18 Aug 1824-22 Mar 1853) in 1849. They had one child:

Louisa J. (27 Jan 1850-28 Aug 1850)

Jane died less than a month after Louisa was born, and Louisa didn’t survive the year. Jane is buried in Mansfield Cemetery north-northeast of Dandridge. William later married Jane’s older sister Ellen, but died in 1853.

Andrew Jackson McCuistion (~1817-?185x?)

Andrew is not well documented. He supposedly married Caroline Hyde (~1825-????) about 1844 in Wright County, Missouri. They reportedly had two children:

James Hiram (1846-1923)

William (1848-1864)

However, another account has Andrew dying in early 1834 and being buried in Roane County, Tennessee.

Samuel Scott McCuistion (1818-1893)

The 1840 census listed Samuel as head of household in Jefferson County for three of his sisters and one younger brother. He apparently never married, instead remaining in that role as head of household for his siblings and other relatives. In 1860, it was widowed sister Ellen, younger brother William, and a few others. In 1870, it was Ellen, William, and his niece Mary Weldon, age 25.

Samuel was a major, apparently in the Union Army, and for many years a county circuit clerk. He died in 1893 and is buried in Dandridge, in either the Dandridge Revolutionary War Graveyard or the Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Acenith Caroline McCuistion (1820-1901)

Acenith, who also went by Cena or Caroline, married William Steward Shannon (21 May 1809-19 Sep 1881) in 1838. Note this is not the same William Shannon who married Acenith’s older sister Mary Ann. Their children (although findagrave.com claims, almost certainly incorrectly, that Rebecca and James were the children of someone named Cynthia):

Rebecca Jane (6 Sep 1839-15 Sep 1931) — m. Jesse James White on 14 Feb 1869

Isabella E. “Lizzie” (2 Feb 1841-1 Mar 1924)

James M. (1843-2 May 1865)

Nancy L. (20 Jul 1844-20 Oct 1901)

Tressa/Thresa Ann C. (4 Nov 1846-28 Dec 1869)

Columbus T. (7 Dec 1848-29 Dec 1892)

Louisa Permilia (22 Jun 1852-Mar 1885)

Samuel George Alexander (9 Apr 1855-6 Mar 1920) — m. Melissa Isabel Fortner in 1876

In 1850, they were living in Washington County with the first six children. In 1860, they were in Bradley County with all eight children. By 1870, they were down to Isabella, Nancy, Columbus, Permelia, and Samuel. In 1880 they were in Grainger County, with Isabella, Nancy, Columbus, and Permelia still at home. William died in 1881. By 1900 Acenith was back in Bradley County, and Isabella & Nancy were still with her. Acenith died in 1901, and is buried in Cumberland Shed Cemetery, Oldfort, Polk County, Tennessee. Several of her children are buried there too.

William D. M. McCuistion (1825-1872)

After the deaths of their parents, William lived apparently all the rest of his life with his older brother Samuel, and there’s no record that he married. He set out to market one day with a load of produce and dropped dead on the way. He’s buried in Long Creek Cemetery, aka Mansfield Cemetery.
