Richard was probably born in South Carolina, but his parentage is unclear. It appears some genealogist muddied the waters by deliberately inventing a fictional father, Henry Laban Mauldin, who he claimed was born about 1730 in Cecil County, Maryland. Many online sources now carry this claim. Richard had a brother named Andrew who fought in the War of 1812.
Nancy was born in North Carolina, one of at least seven children. Her parents were Rev. Moses Sanders (1742-29 Mar 1817) from Virginia, a circuit-riding preacher, and Mary or Sallie Hamilton from Brunswick, Virginia. Before the Revolutionary War, Moses was living in Randolph or Montgomery County, North Carolina, in roughly the center of the state south of Greensboro. Later, the family lived in South Carolina and Georgia.
Richard and Nancy married probably in South Carolina. Their children were reportedly born in either Pickens, South Carolina (just west of Greenville) or in Franklin County, Georgia.
Nancy died about 1808. Richard married Elizabeth Machen (14 May 1782-Oct 1836) from Greenville, South Carolina, daughter of Henry Machen (1745-1821) and Frances Ballenger (1756-1826). Known children:
Epps (1812-1860)
Virginia (1814-????)
William Mordecai, Sr. (1814-31 Oct 1892) — m. Virginia W. Simmons on 17 Aug 1843
Aley (15 Apr 1817-17 Dec 1876) — m. Jepthey Rucker
Grace (15 Oct 1826-18 Dec 1906) — m. Lewis Stovall
At some point, the family settled in Franklin County, Georgia. The 1830 census showed them there. Apart from Richard (age 60-69) and wife (age 40-49), the household consisted of two men and one woman age 20-29, two girls and one boy age 15-19, two girls age 5-9, and one girl under 5.
Richard died in Franklin County, Georgia in 1833. He is buried in Nails Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Jewelville, Banks County (formerly part of Franklin County).
Keziah has her own entry in the family tree.
Nancy married Georgia native Elijah “Lige” Hillhouse (1806-1862). They had 10 children:
Emeline (1828-1889) — m. Haynes
Richard H. (1829-1864) —
John F. (Mar 1831-????)
Mary Elizabeth (Mar 1833-1904) — m. Roach
William Franklin (10 Feb 1835-5 Feb 1910)
Sarah F. (1837-????)
Hannah R. (1839-1928)
Grace Jane (1842-1887) — m. McWhirter
L. Katherine (1843-????)
Harriett Sally (1846-1878) — m. Hughes
Nancy died in 1885 and is buried in the Landmark Baptist Church Cemetery, Holly Springs, Cherokee County, Georgia.
