John was born probably in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County in south central Tennessee, or possibly in North Carolina, parents unknown. Claims that his parents were William Kelley and Mary Ann Lawson from Shenandoah, Virginia are a confusion with a different John Kelley.

Sallie Carter Kelley
Sallie Carter Kelley

Sallie was born in Puncheon Camp Creek, Albany, Greene County, Tennessee, daughter of Levi Carter and Elizabeth Howard from Tennessee. There are stories that she was one-quarter Cherokee. I haven’t chased that down.

John and Sallie married in 1837 in Tennessee. There were lots of John Kelleys in the 1840 census of Tennessee, so no telling which one was him. Family lore says the Carters migrated west to Franklin County, Missouri about 1844. John and Sallie probably moved there at the same time.

The 1850 census listed the family in Franklin County, Missouri: John (40) and Sarah (30), plus children Margaret (14), William (12), Levi (10), Ann (6), John (4), and Mary (2). I don’t know why Lewis was left out, but it’s significant that the census listed a girl named Ann of the same age for whom there is no other evidence. The three eldest were listed as born in Tennessee, and the younger ones in Missouri. They were next door to the Carter family headed by Sallie’s brother John (25), and including Sallie’s mother Elizabeth (56) and siblings Rebecca (22), Joseph (17), Rachel (14), and Matilda (12).

The 1860 census showed the Kelleys in Town 38, Range 11, Pulaski County, Missouri: John (56) and Sarah (39), plus William (20), Levi (18), Lewis (16), John (9), Francis (6), Decater (5), Sarah (2), and Andrew (1). They were with a family named Watkins. They were again next door to the family of Sallie’s brother John Carter. Post office location was Humboldt.

John Kelley reportedly died that same year – supposedly in Miller Township, Maries County, Missouri, although probably they were still in Pulaski County. The location of John’s grave is unknown.

The 1870 census for Lyon, Franklin County, Missouri, about 60 miles west of St. Louis, listed Sarah Kelley (51) with children John (22, farmer), James (15), Sarah (14), and Jackson (11). The census noted that Sarah (our Sallie) could read but not write. All the children still with her were born in Missouri.

The 1880 census showed Sarah (62, widow) living with son J. D. Kelly (25) and wife Susan (supposedly 21), who was also Sarah’s niece, in Miller Township, Maries County, which is just north of Pulaski County.

I can’t find Sallie in the 1900 census. She died about 1905 in Pulaski County, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Shantytown, Maries County, Missouri. The grave marker was placed later, which is why the year of death is approximate.

Children

Margaret Elizabeth Kelley (~1838-1874)

Margaret married Lewis Ezell, Jr. (13 Jan 1821-1883) from Tennessee in 1854. He already had three children from a previous marriage. Margaret’s children with him:

James M. (1856-1893) — m. Nancy Leanna “Nan” McManus in 1885

Elizabeth M. (May ?1858?-1940) — m. John E. James about 1879

William R. Taylor (24 Oct 1858-16 Sep 1944) — m. Louvina Lizebeth Ezell on 4 Jan 1891

Rhoda (27 Feb 1862-30 Aug 1949) — m. S. B. Patterson on 28 Mar 1880; m. David Franklin McManus about 1886; m. Benjamin Henry Smith on 29 Aug 1902

others?

Susan (~1869-????) — m. Wiggins

George (~1874-????)

The 1860 census showed the family in Rutledge Township, McDonald County, Missouri. Along with Lewis’s older children Mary (11), Lewis B. (10), and John W. (6), they had James M. (4), Elizabeth (2), and William H. (1).

The family seem to have been missed by the 1870 census. Perhaps they were in the process of moving to Texas. Margaret died there in 1874, worn down by her last two pregnancies. Lewis remarried the following year.

The 1880 census showed Lewis, age 60, in Cooke County, Texas with his new wife Frances (24!), children Lewis (30), James (24), George (6), and Minnie (3), and stepson George ?Holroyd? (5). The older George was presumably Margaret’s last child, making Minnie the daughter of Lewis and Frances. Margaret’s son William was working as a farmhand for his uncle John Ezell in Jack County, Texas, and later married one of John’s daughters.

Lewis died in 1883, burial location unknown. Frances remarried and had two more children.

William Henry H. Kelley (1840-1915)

William was a private in the 1st US Volunteer Infantry from 24 Jan 1864 to 27 Mar 1865. He married Mary Ann Elizabeth Wadkins (17 Nov 1845-2 Jun 1910) in 1865. They lived in Miller Township, Maries County, Missouri. They had 13 children:

Levi J. (18 Feb 1865-23 Nov 1868)

James Anderson (15 Aug 1867-12 Oct 1933) — m. Ada Bell Creech

Eliza Jane “Louisa” (7 Mar 1870-13 Jan 1907) — m. James H. Snider

Henry Harrison (12 Nov 1872-8 May 1933)

Sarrah M. (1873-8 Jun 1914) — m. Jesse Stover Kuhns

Charles Edward “Charley” (26 Nov 1874-19 Mar 1951) — m. Ila Etna Warren in 1898

Matilda (4 Dec 1876-30 Jan 1889)

Nancy (4 Dec 1876-17 Oct 1951) — m. Hughey Bradley Nichols

Mary Elizabeth “Molly” (28 Feb 1879-28 Nov 1919) — m. Benjamin Franklin Simpson in 189x

John Wesley “Wes” (16 Aug 1881-25 Nov 1963) — m. Cora Martha Yoakum

Arminda “Minnie” (22 Aug 1883-22 Feb 1965) – m. David Allen Nichols

William M. “Billy” (6 Mar 1885-15 Jun 1914)

Rhoda Annie (8 Aug 1887-22 Jan 1965) — m. Albert Huff on 20 Jul 1904; m. Robert Lyman Rarden on 5 Aug 1937

(I don’t know whether daughter Eliza actually went by Louisa, or whether Louisa was really her given name and Eliza was a nickname. The 1870 and 1880 censuses called her Louisa.) In the 1900 census, they still had the four youngest plus son Henry at home. In 1910 there were sons Henry, Charley, and Billy, plus Charley’s wife and two children. Mary Ann died in 1910. William died in 1915 in Dixon, Pulaski County, Missouri. He’s buried with Mary Ann in Fairview Cemetery, Shantytown, Maries County.

Levi Kelley (1842-1905)

Levi, named for his maternal grandfather, was born in 1842 Bledsoe County, Tennessee, and as a very young child moved with his family to Missouri. Sometime after 1860 he moved to Sharp County, Arkansas. He was a soldier in the Arkansas incarnation of Col. Thomas Freeman’s Missouri Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Also during the 1860s, he married Louisa Catherine Rogers (~1842-16 Nov 1882) from Hamilton County, Tennessee. The 1870 census showed him as a farmer in Piney Fork Township, Sharp County with Louisa (27) and the first two of their five children:

Sarah Jane (~1867-????)

John David (~1869-1934)

Mary T. (~1873-????)

Laura (~1879-????)

Maud Minerva (13 Jan 1880-8 Nov 1957) — m. Thomas Franklin Lynn on 27 Apr 1899

The 1880 census showed them in Richwood Township, Sharp County with all the children but Maud. Louisa died in 1882. Levi married Tency Clear (5 Dec 1847-8 Mar 1922) from McNairy County, Tennessee in 1885. His children with her:

Sidney Alexander (~1885-1951)

Eather Louis (20 Jan 1887-18 Dec 1970)

Morgan L. (~1891-????)

Earney Eldon (~1892-1969)

The 1900 census showed the family in Davidson Township, Sharp County, the same area as Levi’s nephew William Kelley. The 1901 records of the Arkansas Pension Board for ex-Confederates (page 268) showed a $25 payment to Levi. Levi died on 8 Sep 1905 in Sharp County, and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery there. Tency died 1922 in Evening Shade, Sharp County, and is buried with Levi.

Ann Kelley (~1844-????)

Ann appeared only in the 1850 census, which didn’t list Lewis, so she might not have existed.

Lewis Kelley (1844-?1898?)

Lewis has his own entry in the family tree.

John Thomas Kelley (1846-????)

I don’t know what happened to John Thomas (~1846), or to John (~1851). It’s possible they were the same person, or that the older one died young. In any case, it’s too common a name to track.

Mary Cynthia Kelley (~1848-????)

I don’t know about Mary either.

Francis Marion “Frank” Kelley (1852-1919)

Frank married Elizabeth McKinnon (1854-1884) in 1870. They lived in Pulaski County. Known children:

Louis “Mack” (28 Jul 1873-5 Apr 1946) — m. ???; m. Edith Elizabeth Vivian Franklin about 1919

Sarah Jane (11 Jan 1877-11 Mar 1930) — m. Jeremiah M. “Jerry” McKinnon

William Henry “Bill” (14 Feb 1882-23 Sep 1968) — m. Etta Mae Farris

Elizabeth died in 1884. The next year, Frank married Martha J. Seaton (1864-1901). Children:

James Franklin “Franklin” (10 Jun 1886-20 Dec 1949) — m. Lula Ellen McKinnon in 191x

John Emmett (26 Aug 1889-11 Nov 1958) — m. N. Pearl ???

Mollie E. (1892-19xx)

The 1900 census showed the family in Spring Creek Township, Phelps County with William and the three younger children at home. After Martha’s death, Frank married Harriet “Hattie” Burnett (15 Apr 1874-19 Aug 1917) about 1902. They had five more children:

Ella May (4 May 1902-16 Feb 1920)

Bessie (1905-????)

Rosa Belle “Rosey” (11 Apr 1906-12 Apr 1973) — m. Joseph Henry Lewis on 28 Mar 1923; m. James Monroe Foster on 18 Apr 1943

Ethel (1909-????)

Gladys (1912-????)

The 1910 census showed them back in Cullen, Pulaski County with their four children, Gladys not having been born yet. Hattie died in 1917, and Frank died in 1919. They’re both buried, apparently without a headstone, in Dunkard Cemetery (aka Gospel Ridge Cemetery), St. Robert, Pulaski County. Their under-age children were farmed out to older half-siblings. At least two of Frank’s children were later buried in Dunkard Cemetery also.

James Decatur Kelley (1855-????)

James D. married his first cousin Susan A. Rollins (~1855-1888), daughter of his aunt Rutha “Betsy” Carter, in 1878. In 1880 his mother was living with them in Miller Township, Maries County. I know of one child, but there could have been others:

Rosette (~1879-????)

I haven’t been able to trace them after 1880. Susan supposedly died in 1888.

Sarah Jane Kelley (1856-1947)

Sarah married John Franklin Mitchell (Mar 1847-1922) from Indiana in 1875. They settled in Miller Township, Maries County, Missouri. Their children:

Rosetta Matilda (13 Nov 1875-28 Feb 1945) — m. Thomas W. J. Crawford on 19 Nov 1896

J. E. (Mar 1880-????) — boy, prob. died young

William Henry (28 May 1881-2 Jan 1978) — m. Cora Moran on 8 Jan 1902

John Franklin, Jr. (13 Oct 1882-23 Jan 1935)

David Christopher “Chris” (29 Aug 1884-5 Aug 1956) — m. Vida Opal Crane about 1920; m. Sylvia Ethel Chafen in 1932

Otto A. (30 Sep 1885-7 Mar 1911)

Frederic Marion (26 Aug 1887-13 Feb 1931) — m. Augusta Mary “Gussie” Crane on 20 May 1921

Effie Rae (22 Sep 1889-26 Feb 1958) — m. Clement Arthur Black on 23 Feb 1910

Ida May (13 Jun 1892-15 Mar 1915)

Clyde Harrison (11 Apr 1895-17 Feb 1917) — m. Zella May Hancock about 1917

Augusta M. “Gussie” (Feb 1897-6 Nov 1991) — m. Adam Aloysious Munsterman on 17 Oct 1925

Fannie Ann (21 Jan 1899-30 Sep 1914)

The 1900 census for Miller Township showed them with nine children, missing only Rosetta, J. E., and William. In 1910 they still had eight of them, Effie having just married.

Between 1910 and 1920, the family moved to Dixon, Union Township in Pulaski County, Missouri, where the 1920 census found them, although too late to escape tuberculosis, which had claimed three of their children. Chris, Fred, and Gussie were still at home, along with a probable grandson named Lloyd (11). John Sr. died there in 1922.

In 1930, Sarah had sons John Jr. and Chris with her. In 1940, she was alone. She died in Dixon, Union Township, Pulaski County in 1947, and is buried with John in Dixon Cemetery.

Some of the children settled in Illinois. Accounts tracing a James Edward Mitchell (1888-19xx) to this family appear to be a mistake.

Andrew Jackson Kelley (1859-????)

I haven’t found Andrew after 1870. There was an Andrew Jackson Kelley who married Nancy Ellen Link in 1888 and settled in Stoddard County, Missouri, down toward the southeastern corner, and he did say his mother was from Tennessee, but that’s not enough to say it was him. Information that he was the man who died in Oregon in 1939 is unverified.
