Marion Eagleton CORBET (25 Feb 1855-17 Apr 1925) +
Julia Roxanna WOOD (17 Dec 1853-6 Jan 1931)

David M. (5 Nov 1877-25 Sep 1898)

Joseph Andrew (26 Feb 1879-18 Jul 1956) — m. Lorena Ella Probst on 28 May 1902

Amanda Leota “Leota” (14 Oct 1881-9 Jan 1964) — m. Charles Wesley Spikes in 1897

Marion Aral (26 Jul 1884-21 Nov 1968) — m. Myrtle Howard on 4 Sep 1910

Aurora Casline (15 Jan 1890-20 Oct 1968) — m. Luther Sherman Clark on 26 Oct 1909

Neoma Ross (21 Oct 1893-12 Aug 1979) — m. Brooks Martin Brinkley on 9 Aug 1914

Marion was born in Jefferson County, Tennessee to David Morrow Corbet and Isabella Sarah Mansfield.

Julia was the daughter of William Wood and Phoebe McKee, also of Jefferson County.

Marion & Julia married on 25 December 1876 in Jefferson County. The 1880 census listed them in the county’s District 4, with sons David W. (2) and Joseph A. (1). Son Joseph later gave his place of birth as Dandridge. I’ve gone right by it every time I drove through Tennessee.

In the 1880s Marion’s parents moved west to settle in Greene County in northeastern Arkansas, taking with them their four youngest. Marion and his family joined them. They were living in Greene County by the time son Marion Aral was born in 1884. In the 1890s Marion and family moved again, settling in Black Rock, Lawrence County, Arkansas.

The 1900 census listed Marion & Julia in Black Rock with children Joseph A., Marion A., Aurora C., and “Naomi” R. Marion was a sawyer, as were both sons. Daughter Leota had married.

The 1910 census listed Marion (56), Julia (56), children Marion A. (25) and Neoma (16) – and John Burgett (8) from Alabama. This was John L. Burgett (15 Jun 1902-9 Dec 1991), son of Thomas David Valentine Burgett (1877-1912) and Melvina Bates (1883-1910) of Blount County, Alabama. It appears his mother had recently died, but why was he here? He later moved back to Alabama, married, had children, died, was buried, never any explanation.

By 1920, it was down to just Marion (64) & Julia (66).

Marion died in 1925, and is buried in Oak Forest Cemetery, Black Rock. The 1930 census showed Julia, widowed, living in Black Rock with son Marion and his family. A different page of the same census listed her living with daughter Aurora and her family. Maybe she alternated.

Julia died the following year. She is buried with Marion in Oak Forest Cemetery. Their children Joseph and Aurora are buried there as well.

Children

David M. Corbet (1877-1898)

David, named for his grandfather, died in 1898 of unknown causes, aged not quite 21. He’s buried in Gross Cemetery, Randolph County, Arkansas.

Joseph Andrew Corbett (1879-1956)

Joseph, whose branch of the family spells it “Corbett” or “Corbitt”, married Lurena Ella Probst (1882-1979) in 1902. They remained in Black Rock. Their children:

Tempelton Myer (29 Jul 1903-15 Jun 1989) — m. Opal Rogers

Richard Andrew “Andy” (8 Feb 1907-23 Jan 1979) — m. Thelma Smith on 28 Apr 1928

Clyde E. (8 Nov 1908-2 Apr 1984) — m. Lois T. Dent on 6 Aug 1932

Anna Ellen (21 Oct 1911-28 Jan 1948) — m. Von Campbell Mullen on 2 Jul 1930; m. C. C. Langston

Carson Lester (15 Nov 1914-3 Nov 1990) — m. Irene George in 1934; m. Louise Hartnett in 1941

Joseph Bea “Joe” (8 Mar 1922-2 Sep 2015) — m. Elizabeth Harrison in 1942; m. Rachel Harris in 2008

Joseph was a sawyer and later a farmer. He registered for the draft in both wars. In 1930 the three youngest were still at home. By 1940 it was just son Joe. Joseph and Lurena are buried in Oak Forest Cemetery.

Amanda Leota “Leota” Corbet (1881-1964)

Leota, named (I assume) for her mother’s younger sister Alice Leota Wood, married Charles Wesley Spikes (8 Feb 1874-22 Jan 1949) in 1897 in Randolph County, Arkansas. Their children:

unnamed infant (~1898-~1898)

Alvin Townsend (5 Feb 1901-25 Nov 1951) — m. Laura Wanda Bryan on 6 Sep 1922

Thelma L. (1904-?1975?) — m. James Benton McBurney on 24 Nov 1923; divorced; m. Clark F. Lashley in 193x

Otha Rhea (30 Sep 1907-18 Apr 1978) — m. John Cheston/Clinton Borum on 25 Apr 1925; divorced; m. Karl Lincoln Johnson on 25 Jul 1939

Wesley Ancil (1914-29 Oct 1942) — m. ??? in 193x; divorced

Carlos Corbet (20 Mar 1916-31 Jul 1980) — m. Margaret L. Jordan on 12 Aug 1939

Their first child is buried in Spikes Cemetery, Ingram, Randolph County, Arkansas. By the states of birth that census records gave for the other children, it’s apparent that they moved to Oklahoma around 1902-1904, to Texas around 1909 (the 1910 census showed them in Claytonville, Fisher County, Texas), and to Colorado around 1915. Leota’s younger sister Neoma and her husband joined them in Colorado; in the 1920 census of Baca County, Colorado, Neoma and Leota were living next door to one another.

Leota and Charles moved to Hutchinson, Kansas by 1930, where they remained at least until Charles’s death in 1948. Leota died in Garden City, Finney County, Kansas in 1964, and is buried with her husband in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. Some of their children moved to California. In 1968, son Carlos and his wife were still living in Garden City.

Marion Aral Corbett (1884-1968)

Marion, whose branch of the family spells it “Corbett”, married Myrtle Howard (14 Dec 1886-18 Sep 1967) on 4 Sep 1910. They lived at first in Black Rock. Children were:

Marion Daniel (28 Oct 1911-2 May 1981) — m. Betty Alma Cook on 21 Dec 1934

Aral Glenn (13 May 1913-Apr 2016) — m. Snoda Belle Perry on 28 Sep 1937

Lundy M. (21 Sep 1915-20 Sep 1937)

Herbert Wood (24 Oct 1917-15 Feb 1989) — m. Cleney F. Waddell on 28 Jan 1938

Like his brother Joseph, Marion registered for the draft for both wars. In 1930, he & Myrtle were living in Campbell, Lawrence County, and Marion’s mother Julia was living with them at least some of the time. Son Lundy died in an accident while attending the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. In 1940, they were living in Ashland Township, Lawrence County.

Myrtle died in 1967, and Marion died of a heart attack in 1968, less than a month after his sister Aurora died the same way. They’re buried in Lawrence Memorial Cemetery, Walnut Ridge, as is son Glenn. Their son Marion Daniel Corbet and his son Marion Aral Corbet (12 Aug 1937-24 Sep 1997, named for his grandfather) both resided in Orange, California.

Aurora Casline Corbet (1890-1968)

Aurora has her own entry in the family tree.

Neoma Ross Corbet (1893-1979)

Neoma was sometimes misnamed Naomi in records. In 1914, just as WWI was breaking out in Europe, she married Brooks Martin Brinkley (8 Jan 1893-19 Apr 1983) from Tennessee. They moved to Baca County, Colorado to join Leota and her husband, as noted above. Brooks’s brother Erving went with them too. They had five children:

Ruby Muriel (26 May 1915-7 Apr 2002) — m. David Clark Davis on 24 Jul 1933

Jay Jewel (1918-1955) — m. Mildred B. Chesnut on 28 May 1938

Warren Wood (9 Jan 1921-5 Jan 2015) — m. Gladys Marie Ogden on 29 Dec 1944

Roy Allen (15 Apr 1924-22 Jun 2018) — m. Marjorie “Marge” ???

Nell Rose (3 Aug 1926-14 Aug 2008) — m. Darrell Lee Fourtner on 10 Jan 1944

Brooks was a rancher and farmer in Pritchett, Baca County. Sons Warren and Roy were, too. In 1940 the three younger children were still at home. Neoma and Brooks died in 1979 and 1983 respectively, and are buried in Springfield Cemetery, Baca County, Colorado, as are four of their children.
